“No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.”
1 John 4:12

LOVE is a complicated word, a word that is often misused and misunderstood. In these verses we see a true picture of what love is, WHO love is, and how we should express love to others.

The Greek language has multiple words that mean “love.” Those words are specific enough to express the way you might love ice cream, the way you love your friends, or a general love for all mankind. In this Daily Inspiration, anytime you see “love” it is from the Greek “agape”. This word means an unconditional love that transcends and persists regardless of circumstance. That’s a great big love and very good news for us.

Look at how God demonstrates His love, His agape, for us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is amazing! God loved us not because of who we are, what we’ve accomplished, or what we have to offer. Quite the opposite, in fact. God loved us because LOVE is who GOD is.

John writes that because God loved us, we are to love one another. We are empowered by God Himself to live out this kind of love. His love sets us free to love others!

As we’re closing, it’s important to note one more thing (and this isn’t a small thing): this isn’t a love that comes and goes. The love that God demonstrates toward us isn’t dependent on us working to make God love us. There is nothing you can do to make God love you more than He does right now, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less than He does right now. What an incredibly freeing thought!

This Christmas Eve let us remember and celebrate the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE of our great God.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE:

Choose a family member or yourself to first light the first candle for Hope/Faith (purple candle) , the second candle for Peace (purple candle), the third candle for Joy (pink Candle), and the 4th candle for Love (purple candle) from the Christ Candle (white candle).

SAY:

“We light this first candle of advent representing Hope/Faith, the second candle for peace, the third candle for joy, and the fourth candle for love. Love is more than a feeling, it’s a commitment. God is LOVE. And Love has come to us and for us. This is love … not that we have loved God, but he has loved us with an everlasting love through Jesus. Love has come into my life.”

PRAYER:

I decree with undoubting faith and acceptance:

Dear God, I pray to give greater expression of Your love in all of my relationships this Christmas Eve.

Your love reveals the way for me to have harmonious relationships in my life.

I choose to be an expression of Your love to everyone I meet and base all of my words and actions, beginning today, following You, on the standard of Your love.

Dear God, I accept the gift of Your love.
May it come forth from You, through me, in an inexhaustible way.
I bathe my human mind with Your love, and I pray that my life is changed and enriched with Your love.

Through my willingness to allow it to occur, I give You my human mind, God, and I infuse my human mind with Your Divine Mind.

Flood my human mind, dear God, and every thought within it, with Your pure love.
I pray that people all around me begin to notice the changes taking place in me.
No longer are they dealing with the old me, my outer face, or my old personality.
They are attracted to me because I am God-love in manifestation. I pray that all people become my friends.

Because I am one with You, God, I am enriched by Divine love.

I am a spiritual, loving being, guided by Your CHRIST light and love.

And so, it is. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen

HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS EVE!

Positive Daily Prayer:

SANTA’S PRAYER ON CHRISTMAS EVE by Warren D. Jennings

The sleigh was all packed, the reindeer were fed,
But Santa still knelt by the side of the bed.

“Dear God”, he prayed “Be with me tonight.
There’s much work to do and my schedule is tight.

I must jump in my sleigh and streak through the sky,
Knowing full well that reindeer can’t fly.

I will visit each household before the first light.
I’ll cover the world and all in one night.

With sleigh bells a-ringing; I’ll land on each roof,
Amid the soft clatter of each little hoof.

To get in the house is the difficult part,
So I’ll slide down the chimney of each child’s heart.

My sack will hold toys to grant all their wishes,
The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes.

I will fill all the stockings and not leave a track.
I’ll eat every cookie that is left for my snack.

I can do all these things Lord, only through You,
I just need your blessing, then it’s easy to do.

All this is to honor the birth of the One,
That was sent to teach us, Your most Holy Son.

So to all my friends, least your glory I rob,
Please Lord, remind me who gave me this job.

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATION:

The light of God surrounds me and comes through me to touch all with the spirit of Christmas.

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.”

George Matthew Adams in “The Christmas Heart” wrote, “Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide-open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years … Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.”

________________

A brother and sister had made their usual hurried, obligatory pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm.

Through the years the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The young siblings had fond memories of their childhood here, but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives and called them away to a different life.

The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder, but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live. They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. “Why do you not at least dispose of The Old One? She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her.

“You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expense and work? Why do you keep her anyway?”

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, “Yes, I could use a pair of new boots.”

His arm slid defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her near with gentle caressing, he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

The old couple shook their heads in sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?

So, it was, that because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the “Old One”.

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze, and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury. His wife, back from calling for help, cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief, huddled together before the barn. They were speechless as they rose from the cold snow-covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now.

The old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, “We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us.”

And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his old and withered hand.

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest. Looking up to the top of the hill the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.

Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift. Shadows glistening in the night light.

Bedded down about the “Old One” close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe.

At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits.

The mares that were in foal with a New Year’s crop of babies, pressed uneasily against the “Old One” as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now she lay among them and gazed at the faces of the old man and his wife.

Those she loved she had not disappointed. Her body was brittle with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift— Because of love ONLY because of love.

Tears flowed as the old couple shouted their praise and joy … And again, the peace of love filled their hearts.

This is a true story.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

A Christmas Prayer

Loving God, help us remember
the birth of Jesus, that we may
share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds
and the wisdom of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open
the door of love all over the world.

Let kindness come with every gift
and good desires with every greeting.

Deliver us from evil by the blessing
which Christ brings, and teach us to
be merry with clean hearts.

May the Christmas morning
make us happy to be Thy children,
and the Christmas evening bring us
to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake.

Amen

“I have counsel and sound wisdom, I have the insight, I have strength.”
Proverbs 8:14

First thing in the morning think of God. Before taking any action think of God. Before reacting think of God. Test every decision first in prayer.

Sometimes life presents you with the challenge that calls for great wisdom and strength. Sometimes it involves a decision that will affect other people, or perhaps you are called on to assume a new and heavy responsibility. You may be challenged by some change in circumstances that seems to mean the disruption of your whole way of life.

You can meet every challenging situation or circumstance by putting first things-first, that is, by taking it to God first in prayer.

As you open yourself the God’s inspiration, you will be seeing that every challenge is an opportunity to become stronger, wiser, and happier than you were before. In the silence of prayer will come the assurance that God’s Spirit is with you and is the strength of your life. God inspires you to make right decisions and gives you the strength and courage necessary to carry them out.

God’s sound wisdom is something that you can rely upon. God’s ideas are to the mind as breath is to your lungs. All that is known, and can ever be known, exists in the Mind of God, and it is accessible to your mind through prayer.

This Christmas decide to put first things – FIRST. Follow Jesus by going to God first. Right now, in prayer, ask for counsel, sound wisdom, insight and strength all this week.

All that is true arises from God’s Mind and flows to your receptive awareness. You are sustained constantly by putting first things first.

It is inconceivable that the Mind of God could ever be perplexed about anything. Nor could the Mind of God ever run short of dynamic, creative ideas

The spiritualized human mind is a tributary whose source is the infinite Mind of God. Putting God first, you have access to a limitless stream of Divine inspiration that flows to and through you with ease and power.

In prayer, bless and give thanks for the limitless power and inspiration of God. Ideas that heal, ideas that bless, ideas that strengthen and prosper are never lacking in your life.

Putting God first, you go to God in prayer, and you are one with the creative, sustaining energy of the perfection of God. This Christmas is not like any before it. You become a genius in creativity by receiving ideas directly from the Creator. You accomplish more in less time. You are not blindsided by momentary bumps on the road, and you become excited about 2024.

The Gift of Yourself

(For donations to be credited to the calendar year 2023 – see below)

“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.”
Matthew 25:35

Gifts of the heart instead of the purse mean the most on Christmas morning, and in the memory of the receiver forever.

This teaches about the way we should approach every person every day of Christmas.

The ultimate gift is a gift of yourself.

“Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little more.”
Dr. Seuss

Shared today, eternal truths from some of the greatest writers.

This Christmas – Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing
can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity
to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel
that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything
and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past
and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side
so long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

― Christian D. Larson, Your Forces and How to Use Them

The classic piece by Helen Steiner Rice reminds us the Christ comes to us in the most unexpected ways, in the most unexpected people.

THE CHRISTMAS GUEST

(Helen Steiner Rice)

It happened one day near December’s end,
Two neighbors called on an old-time friend
And they found his shop so meager and mean,
Made gay with a thousand boughs of green,
And Conrad was sitting with face a-shine
When he suddenly stopped as he stitched a twine
And he said, “Old friends, at dawn today,
When the cock was crowing the night away,
The Lord appeared in a dream to me
And said, ‘I am coming your guest to be’.
So, I’ve been busy with feet astir,
Strewing my shop with branches of fir,
The table is spread, and the kettle is shined
And over the rafters the holly is twined,
And now I will wait for my Lord to appear
And listen closely so I will hear
His step as He nears my humble place,
And I open the door and look on His face … “

So, his friends went home and left Conrad alone,
For this was the happiest day he had known,
For, long since, his family had passed away
And Conrad had spent many a sad Christmas Day.
But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas guest
This Christmas would be the dearest and best,
So, he listened with only joy in his heart.
And with every sound he would rise with a start
And look for the Lord to be at his door
Like the vision he had a few hours before.
So, he ran to the window after hearing a sound,
But all that he could see on the snow-covered ground
Was a shabby beggar whose shoes were torn
And all of his clothes were ragged and worn.
But Conrad was touched and went to the door
And he said, “Your feet must be frozen and sore,
I have some shoes in my shop for you
And a coat that will keep you warmer, too.”

So, with grateful heart the man went away,
But Conrad noticed the time of day.
He wondered what made the Lord so late
And how much longer he’d have to wait,
When he heard a knock and ran to the door,
But it was only a stranger once more.
A bent, old lady with a shawl of black,
With a bundle of kindling piled on her back.
She asked for only a place to rest,
But that was reserved for Conrad’s Great Guest.
But her voice seemed to plead, “Don’t send me away
Let me rest for a while on Christmas day.”
So, Conrad brewed her a steaming cup
And told her to sit at the table and sup.
But after she left, he was filled with dismay
For he saw that the hours were slipping away
And the Lord had not come as He said He would,
And Conrad felt sure he had misunderstood.

When out of the stillness he heard a cry,
“Please help me and tell me where am I.”
So again, he opened his friendly door
And stood disappointed as twice before,
It was only a child who had wandered away
And was lost from her family on Christmas Day.
Again, Conrad’s heart was heavy and sad,
But he knew he should make the little girl glad,
So, he called her in and wiped her tears
And quieted all her childish fears.
Then he led her back to her home once more
But as he entered his own darkened door,
He knew that the Lord was not coming today
For the hours of Christmas had passed away.
So, he went to his room and knelt down to pray
And he said, “Dear Lord, why did you delay,
What kept You from coming to call on me,
For I wanted so much Your face to see … “

When soft in the silence a voice he heard,
“Lift up your head for I kept My word–
Three times My shadow crossed your floor–
Three times I came to your lowly door–
For I was the beggar with bruised, cold feet,
I was the woman you gave something to eat,
And I was the child on the homeless street.
Three times I knocked and three times I came in,
And each time I found the warmth of a friend.
Of all the gifts, love is the best,
I was honored to be your Christmas guest.”

Merry Christmas dear friend, we are praying for safe holiday travels for you and your loved ones.

“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!'”
Luke 10:5

Let us make the following prayer during this Christmas season, knowing that our surroundings are imbued with the loving, harmonizing, protecting, and strengthening power of God.

The Christ of God is a living presence in my home.

Christ is the law and order of my home.

Christ is now here and manifesting loving kindness in every heart, word, and action.

Christ is the source of all good, filling our minds, and overflowing into all our obligations with unfailing prosperity.

Christ life strengthens and heals every member of my family.

Christ love works through the minds of every person within my home empowering them to see good only in every member of this family.

I pray and proclaim these mighty truths in the name and through the power of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

THIS DAY AND EVERY DAY THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON God’s loving presence is the true security of your home. Young children look to their parents and other caregivers to provide an atmosphere that is both safe and nurturing to their individual growth.

As adults, we may continue this pattern by expecting others to make us feel loved and safe. Yet it is only when we learn to trust in ourselves and in God’s presence that we will ever feel the peace we seek.

God’s loving presence is the firm foundation on which we build true security in our lives. We know that God is always with us, so it naturally follows that God’s love can be the mainstay of our homes this holiday season. God’s love provides the very shelter of security in which we each thrive.

If you are having a problem getting along with someone, you may be focused on what is wrong with your relationship, so much so, that you might be overlooking what is right with it. Those simple differences between you may begin to grow and eventually push you apart.

Remembering that the presence of God is with and within us all will break all barriers of differences and allows a circle of love and acceptance to draw us together again. Every relationship that is founded on the belief that there is one family of God will flourish.

As each person allows this to happen this Christmas season, our spiritual natures will bring harmony, understanding, and acceptance into every relationship. We acknowledge that opinions and differences make us unique, but it is our oneness of Spirit that unites us all in love, peace, and compassion.

The Christmas Spirit is about setting aside old differences and coming together again in Christ love.

“The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:35

From my family to your family I wish you a joyous Christmas filled with the presence of God’s love manifesting.

In Romans 8:28 it says, “In everything God works for good for those who love God.” A mighty assurance is contained in these words.

You love God and I love God. We rely upon God’s power to adjust and regulate all things. We realize that Divine adjustment by God is mighty to bring about complete change in all the circumstances of our lives, and to establish perfect order.

Right now, we begin to set our world in order by reforming our thoughts. Our Christmas festivities will be blessed by God and filled with God love. Let us invoke the Divine wisdom of God to guide our thinking and let us lay hold of and make manifest the great thoughts of God; the ideas that point the way by which we are to establish God’s kingdom.

In this moment, I invite you to discover God within the peace of the silence of prayer.

Let us be still …

God is with us right now. God’s thoughts are accessible to us. God is your guide; your helper in EVERY task you are given to do this Christmas. God helps you to bring order out of every seemingly perplexing situation that confronts you. When you look to God, your mind is quickened to see the way to take.

Your faith is quickened to see how things are working together for good.

You are now undisturbed by conditions were people who had let stress get the best of them. God gives you the assurance that all is well. You need only to be receptive to God’s wise counsel, obey it unquestioningly and let Divine order work through you.

Declare silently in prayer, that God’s wisdom is your guide and God’s law of harmony is the ruling principle of your Christmas.

In the silence of prayer …

Steadfast and strong, unaffected by outer appearances of disharmony, you shall be equal to every emergency when you know that God is all-powerful and that God is the directive power within God’s Creation. You allow the hope of God to become your hope. You allow the peace of God to become your peace. You allow the love of God to become your love. You allow the joy of God to become your joy.

And you bring Christmas into manifestation now in this time of prayer …

God is the creator of all things. And all things love their Creator. They seek to work together for good to all who love God. We place our trust totally in God. We depend on God for help in every situation. No matter what our needs might be, God is with us, and is able to meet them fully, wisely and lovingly. God is our light. God is our strength. God is our perfect help. In trusting God, we have at our call the greatest power that is available; a power that is instant, constant and unfailing.

We are confident because we know we are not alone. God is with us. We are capable because we know that we do not rely on ourselves alone, but we rely upon God working with us. We are successful because God is always successful. We work with God and God flows through our minds and our bodies. Every movement is directed by the Divine.

We have a knowing, in prayer, that God is working through us. And God working through us is equal to every demand.

No emergency of life can be greater than the power of God in us to cope with it.

THROUGH THE PRESENCE AND THE POWER OF GOD, DIVINE ORDER IS NOW ESTABLISHED IN YOU. PEACE AND STABILITY ARE MANIFEST IN YOUR WORLD.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

These Godly thoughts are accepted inside your human mind. These Divine thoughts are acted upon this week, every moment during our Christmas season.

In the nature of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, we say Amen.

The Birth of God's New Light

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o ̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“For once you were in darkness, but now in the Lord you are in light.”
Ephesians 5:8

(For donations to be credited to the calendar year 2023 – see below)

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of the light of the world. Allow the birth of God’s light in you, consenting to give up all darkness to the touch and birth of God’s light.

Have you ever witnessed the splendor of the dawn breaking? I believe dawn is especially beautiful this time of year at Christmas time. As the sun comes over the horizon and warms a snowy landscape you feel the presence of God.

As the sun slowly but steadily rises, the sky turns from shades of purple, blue, red, and coral to one vibrant, white light. The sun that seemed lost behind the horizon now illumes half the earth.

During times of confusion or loss, you may think that your faith is dimmed, but it still burns steadily and brightly within you. Like the light from the rising sun dances across the sky, changing from several shades into one, your faith arises to light the way to your oneness with God.

Together with thousands of others in this moment, we focus our faith on God and illumine the far reaches of the world. Together, we radiate a powerful spiritual energy that is strong enough to surmount any obstacle this Christmas.

For many who are reading this Positive Daily Inspiration, it will remind them that this Christmas is defined by new opportunity from God to begin again.

With God’s help you are moving again and enjoying the movement of life.

Robert Louis Stevenson said, “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”

Carpe Diem – -seize the day!

Live not, this day like any other. This day is a brand-new opportunity for freshness and originality. This Christmas does not have to be a repeat of any other, especially if the former ones have been less than perfect.

Choose a new path today.

Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

A new day has dawned and so a new life can be created. Today is a very special day for you. Dedicate yourself to celebrating the new you that is emerging moment by moment this Christmas.

You are grateful for each opportunity to learn and grow. Every opportunity and challenge are messages from God that you are ready to climb even higher than before. Your upward journey challenges you to be better than you have ever been before. Each new lesson renews you and vitalizes your interest in demonstrating all that Jesus Christ taught in every area of your life.

Remember in the Bible, 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”

Dear God, I pray for Your touch of Divine light to illumine my mind and body this Christmas.
I pray for a new morning in my life and the dawn of Divine ideas.
Fill me with Your light.
Take away all darkness in me.
Illumine every crevice.
Thank You God!

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATION:

Today, a new day dawns in my life.

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

“I am not alone at all, I thought. I was never alone at all. And that, of course, is the message of Christmas. We are never alone. Not when the night is darkest, the wind coldest, the world seemingly most indifferent. For this is still the time God chooses.”
Taylor Caldwell

” … the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Luke 2:10-11

As a child, I thought joy came from receiving “things.” The only true and lasting joy comes from within. Outer things are just “the frosting on the cake” to the well-being you feel inside. You do not need to look to anyone else to give you joy. God gives joy, continuously and you feel it as you give it away. Joy is our spiritual heritage; it is a free gift from God.

There is always an infinite supply of Divine joy. This Christmas, you CAN HAVE the great joy. Ask God for joy, then close your eyes and commune with the joy given directly to you from God. The joy does not depend on outer events, it depends on inner events. Joy cannot be manufactured outside of us. Joy and its limitless reservoir is from God.

CHRISTMAS EVE 1881

Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means and then never had enough for necessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.

It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was 15 years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn’t been a enough money to buy me the rifle I had wanted so bad that year at Christmas.

We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn’t in much of a mood to read Scriptures.

But Pa didn’t get to the Bible, instead he bundled up and went outside.

I couldn’t figure it out because we had already done all the chores. Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard. “Come on, Matt,” he said. “Bundle up good, it’s cold out tonight.”

I was really upset then. Not only wasn’t I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one’s feet when he told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on, then got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn’t know what.

Outside, I became even more dismayed. There, in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn’t going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell.

We never hitched up the big sled unless we were going to haul a big load. Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn’t happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. “I think we’ll put on the high sideboards,” he said. “Here, help me.

The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high sideboards on. When we had exchanged the sideboards, Pa went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood … the wood I had spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then sawing into blocks and splitting during the fall. What was he doing?

Finally, I said something. “Pa,” I asked, “what are you doing?”

“You been by the widow Jensen’s lately?” He asked. The widow Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I’d been by, but so what?

“Yeah,” I said, “why?”

“I rode by just today,” Pa said. “Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They’re out of wood, Matt.” That was all he said, then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood.

I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to our loading, then we went to the smokehouse and Pa took down the big ham and a side of bacon. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and the smaller sack of something in his left hand.

“What’s in the little sack?” I asked.

“Shoes. They’re out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the little children some candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”

We rode the two miles to widow Jensen’s, pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn’t have much by worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn’t have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoes and candy? Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us. It shouldn’t have been our concern.

We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible. Then we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door open a crack and a timid voice said, “Who is it?”

“Lucas Miles, ma’am, and my son, Matt. Could we come in for a bit?” Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. “We brought you a few things, ma’am,” Pa said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table.

Then, Pa handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children … sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn’t come out.

“We brought a load of wood too, ma’am,” Pa said. Then he turned to me and said, “Matt, go bring enough in to last for a while. Let’s get that fire up to size and heat this place up.”

I wasn’t the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and, much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind, I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks and so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn’t speak.

My heart swelled within me and a joy filled my soul that I had never known before. I had given at Christmas, many times before, but never when it made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people. Soon I had the fire blazing and everyone’s spirits soared.

The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candy and widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn’t crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. “God bless you,” she said, “I know the Lord Himself has sent you. The children and I have been praying that He would send one of his Angels to spare us.”

In spite of myself, the lump return to my throat and tears welled up in my eyes again. I never thought of Pa in those exact terms before, but after widow Jensen mentioned it, I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.

Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes. Tears were running down widow Jensen’s face again when we stood up to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and didn’t want us to go. I could see that they missed their Pa, and I was glad that I still had mine. At the door Pa turned to the widow Jensen and said, “The Mrs. wanted to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has turkey for too many meals. We’ll be by to get you about eleven. It’ll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn’t been little for quite a spell.” I was the youngest. My two older brothers and two older sisters were all married and had moved away. Widow Jensen nodded and said, “Thank you, Brother Miles. I don’t have to say, “May the Lord bless you,” I know for certain that God will.”

Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold. We had gone a ways, Pa turned to me and said, “Matt, I want you to know something. Your Ma and me had been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn’t have quite enough. Then yesterday, a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your Ma and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and started into town this morning to do just that. But on the way I saw little Jakey scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do. So, son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand.”

I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it. Just then, the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on widow Jensen’s face and the radiant smiles of her three children. For the rest of my life, whenever I saw any of the Jensen’s, or split a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering brought back the same joy I felt right in their home beside Pa that night. Pa had given me much more than a rifle that night. He had given me the best Christmas of my life.

Personal note: have you ever heard anyone say: “I hate Christmas?” If anyone dislikes the holidays, they are looking at them from the wrong end. The joy of Christmas is not found in receiving, BUT IN GIVING, especially to those in need.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE:

Choose a family member or yourself to first light the first candle for Hope/Faith (purple candle), the second candle for Peace (purple candle), and the third candle for Joy (pink Candle) from the Christ Candle (white candle).

SAY:

“We light this first candle of advent representing Hope/Faith, the second candle for peace, and now the third candle for joy. Let us not confuse happiness with joy. Happiness is circumstantial and temporary. Joy is permanent and it is not of this world. Joy is a supernatural delight and deep satisfaction in who God is. Jesus brought joy into my world that needed healing. And now he has come into my world with joyful promise. Joy has come into my life.”

PRAYER:

I decree with undoubting faith and acceptance:

On this Sunday, I accept God’s joy and I express God’s joy by giving.
I ask for and give first in joy this Christmas season in celebration of the birth of Jesus.

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen

Christmas Adventure (Submitted)

(For donations to be credited to the calendar year 2023 – see below)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid.

I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: “There is no Santa Claus,” she jeered. “Even dummies know that!”

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her “world-famous” cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me.

“No Santa Claus?” she snorted … “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”

“Go? Go where, Grandma?” I asked. I hadn’t even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. “Take this money,” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.

I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping.

For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for.

I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church.

I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough; he didn’t have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!

I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. “Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes, ma’am,” I replied shyly. “It’s for Bobby.”

The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat.

I didn’t get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it.

Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. “All right, Santa Claus,” she whispered, “get going.”

I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven’t dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker’s bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were – ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95.

May you always have LOVE to share, and may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10

You have the power to improve your environment. Each of us can make an important difference in our world and with God’s help we can meet and overcome any challenges facing our world.

Just as the still depths of the ocean are undisturbed by surface waves, within you – in the still depths of your being, God brings pure peace. This pure peace and life within you are undisturbed by experiences. Therefore, as you take your stand with God, you remain stable and steady.

If you are facing a challenge, keep your thoughts away from the waves of the storm and anchored in the depths of peace and quiet. Solutions that are perfect are the God-given state that now comes forth unimpeded by fear and questioning.

Although environmental changes and challenges can seem large and complex, you begin with the individual environments of your home, neighborhood and workplace. You do what you can do to bring beauty, illumination, love and joy to your own personal world.

You take your stand with God, for in God there is no lack. In God there is order, and it comes forth within your life.

You make your life Christ centered. You think, speak, and act centered in the Christ. Where there are environmental challenges, the ideas and means to resolve them are forthcoming from God.

As it says in Philippians 1:27, “Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Many wonderful things happen when you give expression to the Christ. People around you feel comfortable and at ease. You lose the ability to be critical or judgmental. Situations are resolved quickly and easily as you react to them in positive ways. When you choose to bring out your best – positive results will follow!

Living your life as worthy of the gospel of Christ means that you do not get impatient or frustrated with outer conditions. The inner you does not get angry with others, but pauses before speaking or acting, to speak and act with love and understanding

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

“It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.”
