One day, three men were hiking and unexpectedly came upon a large raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea of how to do so. The first man prayed to God, saying, “Please God, give me the strength to cross this river.”

Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs, and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, after almost drowning a couple of times.

Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, saying, “Please God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river.”

Poof! God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about an hour, after almost capsizing the boat a couple of times.

The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two, so he also prayed to God saying, “Please God, give me the strength and the tools … and the intelligence … to cross this river.”

And poof! God turned him into a woman. She looked at the map, hiked upstream a couple of hundred yards, then walked across the bridge.

Curtis & Leroy saw an ad in the Starkville Daily News Newspaper in Starkville, MS. and bought a mule for $100.

The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day …

The next morning the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, the mule died last night.”

Curtis & Leroy replied, “Well, then just give us our money back.”

The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”

They said, “OK then, just bring us the dead mule.”

The farmer asked, “What in the world ya’ll gonna do with a dead mule?”

Curtis said, “We gonna raffle him off.”

The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead mule!”

Leroy said, “We shore can! Heck, we don’t hafta tell nobody he’s dead!”

A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis & Leroy at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store and asked.

“What’d you fellers ever do with that dead mule?”

They said, “We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do.”

Leroy said, “Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars apiece and made a profit of $998.”

The farmer said, “My Lord, didn’t anyone complain?”

Curtis said, “Well, the feller who won got upset. So, we gave him his two dollars back.”

Dear God, today, I ask in prayer that you will light my way, and lighten my load. Give me the wisdom to know who I am, and what I am to do, and to be. Let me see in myself that which You would express through me.

Dear God, govern my thinking. Keep it true to Your truth. Help me to be constructive, productive, and positive, in my every thought. Strengthen me in my decision to be receptive, teachable, and flexible, so that Your wisdom can guide and direct me.

Dear God, hold me steady. Let me not waver or vacillate. Direct my steps into paths that enable me to grow in the ways I am meant to grow, to give in the ways I am meant to give. Make me wise and understanding, so that I can recognize and accept all the opportunities that life offers me.

Dear God, I pray that I express the perfection of Your life in my life, today. “People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and they pass themselves by without wondering.” — St. Augustine, 354-430 A.D.

In the Eastern Sierras, there is an Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Some of these trees date back to 3,000 years old, with the oldest known one being over 4,700 years old. Each tree is a work of art – a tribute to the life it has lived. Each tree is unique in its shape and size and texture – no two are alike. These trees have survived fires and storms, and continue to heal and survive, majestically.

Each of us survives life’s challenges and storms, painting us into beautiful art, each unique and precious – a rare gem. No one person is like any other. The combination of our physical looks, our characteristics, our talents and skills make us a unique expression of God. Yet, we pass by ourselves without awe, without wondering at the miracle of us.

Each of us is a work of art. We have been molded with our opportunities and challenges of life. You know, personally, just what you have lived through. Yet, we downplay our skills and talents; we are slow to forgive ourselves for mistakes; and we are very critical of ourselves, in so many ways.

If we were to have a friend who lived through exactly the same life, we would have great admiration for that friend. We would be in awe that our friend had survived and had survived so well. Yet, we pass by ourselves, as though we have accomplished some small, petty thing.

Today, take a moment, and revel in the fact that you have gotten to this point in your life, in the very best ways you have known how. Each and every moment, you do the best that you can, with what you have before you. When we look back, we usually see that we could have done it better – but, really, at the time, we didn’t know what we know now. So, today, we let go of our criticisms of our thoughts, our words, and our actions, and

we just appreciate ourselves.

Today, we hold ourselves in God’s precious light that shines through us, each moment, and we see ourselves for what we really are – God’s precious art — a work of art that is invaluable and irreplaceable.

Today, as we pass by ourselves, we wonder, in awe, how we could be so good – and we know the answer. God resides within us, helping us along our way, constantly perfecting this treasure – ourselves.

You are God’s child – a rare, special work of art.

Isaiah 49:18

In the silence of prayer, we truly know that God is here. There is nothing to fear, so we can let go of our troubles and know that we are now, and always have been, enfolded in, surrounded by, and infilled with the presence of God.

How wonderful, beloved, to know that we are beloved of God; that God loves us with an everlasting love. Wherever we are, whatever problems we may be immersed in, we are loved by God.

As we think of ourselves as being enfolded in, surrounded by, and infilled with the love of God, we can relax, even more deeply, into the silence of prayer. As we relax more deeply into the silence of prayer, we find that God is there.

(Silence)

There is a deep security found in resting with God. Whatever the desire of our heart this day for ourselves and for others, we can bring all of us into the silence of prayer and find the answers we seek. If you are moving to another location, job, or opportunity, we know the love of God has gone before us to make our way safe, smooth, and successful.

It is wonderful and powerful to know that the Spirit of God is with us, and has already prepared the way, so we may move, safely and smoothly, into whatever new place we need to be. This is true for you, beloved, right now. So we rejoice and give thanks for that presence and power of God that has made the way safe and secure.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Perhaps, as we go to the silence of prayer, we find that we have to move into a new state of spirituality where we can experience more health and more life. We know God is the source of life, for God is all life. That life power within us is the ever-present healing power of God.

As we move into a state of spiritual awareness where we recognize what Jesus demonstrated, that wholeness is our Divine right, we quicken that life power within us. We find that the old passes away, and we move into a new spiritual consciousness of wholeness, life, and health. We feel that activity healing us now.

Rest in the presence of God in prayer …

Perhaps we realize we need to move on into a new area of success – an area where we can experience new good, in abundant measure, in our lives. We know that God is the source of all supply, all wisdom, and all understanding. We know, too, that God is with us. God will guide, direct, and help us to experience the abundance that is ours by Divine birthright.

So, we move into a new state of prayer where we know that God has provided. We open our mind/heart, our whole being, to that abundance right now, and we are richly supplied.

As we know this, we can relax and let go in God …

In this prayer-time, if we have a need for more love in our lives, as we move from whatever state of human consciousness we may presently occupy, into the full awareness of God as love, we feel ourselves in that state of consciousness where we become love. We then truly do see that harmonious, equalizing, harmonizing power doing its perfect work in our lives. It becomes a mighty, attracting power to attract new love and to send new love into our world.

God is the answer, and God is with us, through us, and all about us. So, beloved, whatever your need, know that God is with you.

Place your right hand in God’s hand, and God will help you, lead you, guide you along the way, and will show you the right activities for your life. God will help you to experience the love that is yours by Divine birthright, and the wholeness and health that are your destiny.

So, relax now, into the silence of your own being, in prayer. Move now into that state of spiritual consciousness where you are one with the one presence and one power – God.

Rest in the silence, in the stillness of God …

And in the silence, we experience a sure knowing that God loves us with an everlasting love, that God has filled us with the power to do, to be, and to accomplish all things, and that God is with us all along the way – a very present help.

As we bring our time of prayer to a close, and as we bring our thoughts back to the here and now, we know that we have established a greater spiritual consciousness of the love of God in our life. We know that we shall be made manifest for God is so good: As in mind, so in manifestation; as in heaven, so in earth. The heavens of our minds are filled with the goodness of God, and likewise shall be the earth of our experience.

This we do affirm, in the name and through the power of the living, loving presence of God that we experience and express at all times.

In the name of Jesus Christ … Amen.

As we take a moment to appreciate the wonders of nature that surround us, let us also reflect on the ways in which we can each contribute to the protection and conservation of our Earth. May we find the strength and wisdom to make choices that honor the Earth and all its inhabitants.

Observations On Growing Older

Going Out is good.. Coming Home is better!

When People say “You Look Great” … They Add “For Your Age!”

You Forget names … But it’s OK because other people forgot they Even knew you!!!

The 5 pounds you wanted to lose is now 15 and you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 pounds.

Your husband sleeps better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than he does in bed. It’s called his “pre-sleep”.

You miss the days when everything worked with just an “ON” and “OFF” Switch …

When GOOGLE, ipad, email, modem … Were unheard of, and a mouse was something that made you climb on a table.

You tend to use more 4 letter words … “what?” … “when?” … ???

Your husband has a night out with the guys, but he’s home by 9:00 P.M. Next week it will be 8:30 P.M.

You read 100 pages into a book before you realize you’ve already read it.

Now that your husband has retired … You’d give anything if he’d find a job!

You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet … 2 of which you will never wear.

To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, or students … here is something to make you chuckle.

After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve.
And the first thing he said was, “Don’t”.
“Don’t what?” Adam replied.
“Don’t eat the forbidden fruit.” God said.
“Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey, Eve … we have forbidden fruit!”
“No way!” says Eve
“Yes way!” says Adam
“Do NOT eat the fruit!” said God.
“Why?” Adam and Eve both ask.
“Because I am your father and I said so!” God replied, (wondering why he hadn’t stopped creation after making the elephants).
A few minutes later, God saw his children having an apple break and He was ticked!
“Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?” God, as our first parent, asked.
“Uh huh,” Adam replied.
“Then why did you?” said the Father.
“I don’t know,” said Eve.
“She started it!” Adam said.
“Did not!” said Eve.
“Did too!”
“DID NOT!”
Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own.

Thus, the pattern was set and it has never changed!

But there is reassurance in this story.

If you have, persistently and lovingly, tried to give children wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be hard on yourself. If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

Advice for the day: If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle: “Take two aspirin” and “Keep away from children.”

You spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next 16 years telling them to sit down and shut-up.

Grandchildren are God’s reward for not killing your children.

Mothers of teens know why some animals eat their young.

Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat, word for word, what you shouldn’t have said.

The main purpose of holding children’s parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own.

We child-proofed our home 3 years ago and they’re still getting in!

Anyway, be nice to your children, they might choose your nursing home, someday.

HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW

Don’t grab your Bible—- I challenge you to do this without any outside assistance :-). One bit of advice I would give is to read the following through, before you start trying to solve it. The instructions are in the paragraph. Enjoy!

There are 30 books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them? This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are easy to spot. That’s a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or a scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund-raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade booth set a new record. The local paper, The Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, “The books are all right here in plain view hidden from sight.” Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who must be shown. One revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. Also, keep in mind, that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus; there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph waiting to be found. God Bless.

BUZZARDS, BATS & BUMBLEBEES

If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or on flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee.

They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not ever realizing that the answer is right there “Above” them.

It is very foolish to forget about God’s help. God’s help is ever-available.

There was a man by the name of Russell Kemp. While he was walking along a seashore, he was in a bad mood, thinking negatively that he could not do something. In a sudden reaction, he decided that it was negative to be thinking that he could NOT do the thing he desired to do. He knew the thoughts he was thinking were like prayers, so he decided to stop this misuse of his thoughts, and switched the creative energy of his thinking to thoughts of “I can.”

What a difference this thought made!

I can! This is the affirmative impulse of existence, the very success principle of faith. You cooperate with God by thinking in harmony with the forward, creative, constructive thrust behind your life.

He said, “The great waves breaking on the shore in joyous obedience to the moon’s restless pull, thundered, ‘I can, because I obey my power.’ The seagulls, balancing, circling, screaming with joy like happy children as they displayed their exquisite skill in riding air currents, were exultantly declaring, ‘I can!’ The trees bending gracefully to the gusts from the sea were happily saying, ‘Look how I can yield and surrender to the wind, and then just as easily sway back.’

“The butterflies, hovering, flitting, sampling the blossoms, were saying, ‘I can dart here and there, on my fragile wings, fly on invisible guidelines for hundreds of miles. I can happily obey the unerring instinct of drive of the life force that fills me.’

“The radiant sun, the bright blue sky, the drifting clouds, all were saying, ‘I can!’

“What on earth ever came over me to walk in a downcast mood through this wonderfully happy scene, in a bad mood, glooming over the words, ‘I can’t?’

“Even if it seems humanly impossible, you will stop and consider further before you give up. You will ask yourself, “How do I know this is impossible? After all, many things that we do today were not too long ago considered impossible.

“It was impossible to talk on the telephone until Bell invented it and perfected it. Even then it seemed impossible to get manufactured because hardheaded businesspeople would not invest in it. They said, ‘It is only a toy. It will never work.’ Then Bell said, ‘I can make it work, for the principle is right.’ And he did.”

Have you been told that it is impossible for you to get well, to be in good health? Who says so? Why do you take the word of another person, however well-meaning and sincere? Has not Jesus said, “With God all things are possible!” You know that with God’s help you can be healed. You believe that God’s power is healing you now. What a difference a thought makes!

You think of yourself and picture yourself in happy, healthy terms — continued trouble-free health, superb health, vitality overflowing. Not only can you picture yourself in this way, but you believe in God’s power to make this an accomplished fact. God and you are working together.

Are you discouraged, disappointed? Do you feel defeated by life, have you given up trying? Decide today to switch to the success current. Say to yourself, “With God I can succeed, I can start over. I can claim and feel the flow of strength, courage, and power. I can bounce back. I will bounce back. I can, praise God, I can!”

Somehow, at the very depths of discouragement, it is easiest to reverse the failure currents of our thinking and switch to thoughts of success and good fortune, because we are subconsciously ready to rebound. The very nature of our being as children of God demands it. It is part of our spiritual DNA. It is impossible for God to fail, or even to conceive of failing. Only humans can conceive of failure. The human can succeed in making his or her false conviction of failure an apparent fact, only because their inherent success tendency has enabled them to do this. A person can say, “I am a failure,” and succeed in having their words fulfilled. Or, he or she can say, “I can be successful,” and have their words fulfilled.

Your mind cannot fail to respond to your thought. You are no fool and you realize this. You are totally switching the resistless energy of your thoughts and feelings into the lift, the positive flow, the drive of God’s successful will.

What a difference a thought makes. You can switch your thought currents, right now, if you need to.

However you feel about the past, you can prepare for a better tomorrow by surrendering your will to God. What does it mean to surrender to God? It does not mean giving up personal freedom or the ability to make your own choices. It does mean that you let go of thoughts or ways of living that may be limiting you, and let God show you a better way.

As April dawns, you have a clean slate upon which to write the experiences of your life. You can ensure that these experiences will uplift you by surrendering them to God and letting God’s will be done. God sees the bigger picture and knows the good that you have in-store. You are exchanging your thoughts of limitation and the experiences of yesterday for even greater blessings than you ever imagined possible.
