Positive Daily Inspiration - December 30, 2022 - Greatest New Year's Resolution

“Let your steadfast love in your faithfulness keep me safe forever.”
Psalms 40:11

Perhaps, our greatest New Year’s resolution would be to love more in 2023.

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

“Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

“I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”

“Sure,” said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. “Here, Dolly!” he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up …

“I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.

In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup.

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

“How much?” asked the little boy … “No charge,” answered the farmer, “There’s no charge for love.”

The world is full of people who need someone who understands. Understand them. Love them.

Make this your main resolution for 2023.

I love the Bible quote above. It talks of God’s blessing at the flood stage. It is God’s will for you.

2023 can be your turnaround year.

Follow the THREE KEY PRINCIPLES.
Often people ask how they could have the extra push to accomplish the great things that they dream of in life. Usually I answer, “By faith.”

When they say, “Be more specific,” I say, “By living and practicing THREE KEY PRINCIPLES.

FIRST KEY PRINCIPLE – God Is Your Source!

The Bible says, “My God shall supply all your needs according to God’s riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

You turn your life over to God and start looking directly and personally to God as THE source of your supply. Remember, it’s not What is your source, but Who is your source.

SECOND KEY PRINCIPLE – Give and It Shall Be Given to You!

Jesus said, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, running over, shall be given to you. For with the same measure that you give, shall be measured to you again.” Luke 6:38

Whatever you give becomes a seed that you plant for God to multiply back. But YOU initiate the action. In your God-given free will you initiate the movement.

You give first. You continually look for ways to give of your love, your talent, your time, and earnings – anything that represents you. You give until it becomes part of you … Giving in joy … Without grudging.

And God multiplies the gift given – back to you in the form of your personal needs. Receiving follows giving. A miracle follows believing. Breathing in follows breathing out. The harvest follows the seed sowing and soil tending. God who gives you the seed to sow is the One who multiplies the seed sown!

God gives you an opportunity to give, which, if you accept it, turns into an opportunity for you to receive 100 fold. The more you give the more you receive.

When I first got into ministry, I didn’t have very much money. That was my excuse for not giving money to my spiritual source, and certainly not tithing. When I learned this principle and started to give first, my whole life changed, almost instantly, for the better, I was blessed beyond anything that I can write in words. I can’t believe that it took me so long – but I thank God that I discovered it, I gave at depth, and started to live the non-ending abundant life, instead of a VERY limited life.

Give, in faith, not as a debt you owe – but as a seed you sow.

THIRD KEY PRINCIPLE – Expect a Miracle!

Just as you look to God is your source, and give to God as a seed of faith you plant, so you expect a miracle from God. Giving first ALWAYS brings a harvest. You CAN expect unbelievable great things. When you do your part and release your faith God will send the miracle.

This is the key point on which many people fail. They give, but they never expect God to give anything back. They have been taught that giving is an obligation … their Christian duty. Thus, they have developed a theological false modesty that violates every principle of life. They put a seed in the ground and expect a harvest but give to God and expect nothing!

My relatives were Ohio, and West Virginia farmers. Every farmer I knew, went into the field regularly to see how much the seed has grown and how soon they can send trucks in and collect the harvest. If they didn’t expect a return, they wouldn’t check the fields. And if they didn’t check the fields, the harvest could be there, but they wouldn’t know it.

Thus, it would be wasted, missed, and lost.

When you do your part, and release your faith, GOD WILL SEND THE MIRACLE. The New Testament puts it this way, “Surely blessing, I will bless thee, and multiplying, I will multiply thee.”
Hebrews 6:14

This is why you must expect a miracle – so you will recognize it when God sends it and reach forth and receive it from God’s hand. Otherwise, it may pass you by.

Let’s look again at the powerful Bible quote I mentioned in the first principle:

“But my God shall supply ALL your need according to God’s riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

MY GOD … The Bible says that MY GOD shall supply all your needs. It doesn’t say that the government will do it. It doesn’t say that your job, or your business will do it. It says that MY GOD will do it. So if someone lets you down, it really doesn’t matter. Because God will never let you down. God often uses humans as the means, but God is the source. All other sources are instruments only.

SHALL SUPPLY … A need exists to be met. God SHALL SUPPLY all your need. SHALL is a strong word. The moment your need faces you, God’s SHALL SUPPLY promise goes into effect.

YOUR NEEDS – no matter what they are – are a legitimate claim you have upon God’s limitless resources to be met in full. You give God your best, and as God says in Luke 6:38, then ASK God for God’s best. This is scriptural. When done with sincerity, God moves.

ALL YOUR NEED … God doesn’t fragment your life into different parts. God is concerned with ALL YOUR NEEDS. No need should intimidate, or bully you. Whatever your need is – God comes to meet that need. You are plugged into God’s power. God will answer. You can expect a miracle – NOW – to meet your need.

ACCORDING TO GOD’S RICHES … God controls all sources of supply. BOTH THE EXPECTED AND THE UNEXPECTED SOURCES. If one sources wiped out, God will give you a supply from another if you look TO GOD as your source.

In human mind, our needs often falsely appear to exceed God’s abundance. But the truth is that God supplies us at the flood stage of good, in good times or bad times, God supply is ACCORDING TO GOD’S RICHES.

God’s riches ALWAYS equals, or exceeds, your every need.

JOYFUL YEAR OF POSITIVE EXPECTATION

“Whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Matthew 21:22

In my seminars on prayer I used to share with people to change the word “prayer” to “expectation.” Some people’s prayers are so negative, that they can do nothing but expect the worst. They pray mainly focused on what they do not want instead of the positive that they wish to expect. Expecting the worst blocks God’s good. Each person has free-will, and because of that, God does not force good upon you. Many times we lock ourselves in a self-imposed prison of concepts of doubt, worry, and limitation.

What are you expecting? The worst? The best?

I pray it is THE BEST. Placing your faith in God’s good is the key to the good life. To pray with expectancy is to pray with an assurance that each prayer will be answered by God in a positive way.

You pray with this expectancy this next year, knowing that all your needs will be met in the right time and the perfect way. As Jesus assured you, “Whatever you ask in prayer, you WILL receive, if you have faith!”

You EXPECT A MIRACLE!

Your expectation is grounded in your faith in God as the source of all your good. You expect that you are receiving abundance in your life. Your needs are being met.

You expect and accept that you were created to be healthy. Your mind is alert and enthusiastic. Your body is strengthened and filled with energy. Your joy is overflowing in your soul. The life force of God flows through you, nourishing and revitalizing each cell. With God as the source of your good, you expect and accept your good now.

This will be a year of joy. You expect joyful surprise. A small child looks at his or her surroundings with the joy of seeing great adventures. Everything is new and worthy of investigation. Nothing is too small or insignificant to be overlooked.

In 2023, you look at your world with expectant eyes. You find joy in the smallest task, because you delight in being a part of this great experience called life.

Joy is more than a state of mind. It is a state of expectation. When you are feeling the joy of spirit, it comes from deep within you and fills every part of you. Your inner joy is unshakable because it is founded in God.

Your joy comes from knowing that you are a child of God. You are connected, needed, loved. You are heir to all the beauty and wonder of God’s abundance and you expect it in your life.

Truly, this is reason enough to be joy-filled and expectant this next year.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

“Seek first God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Have you ever had a sudden, unexplainable feeling that there is more to life than you are experiencing? I know that I have, and that is probably why I gave my life to God to do ministry. Not everyone is supposed to do ministry, it was my particular path; but there are many paths of God.

Most of the time, God is calling you with an almost inaudible voice, calling you to a new quest of discovery. You must be a seeker on a quest to fully experience God.

You can choose to ignore the call, or you can begin the quest of the seeker and start to uncover the discovery that is meaningful and fulfilling for you. As a spiritual seeker, you are desiring more of God and the goodness of God in your life. You are seeking to follow Jesus Christ to make the great discoveries that He said you are entitled to make.

Life is more than just the school of hard knocks. There is a better and easier way to live life, and it is found through God.

The more you see God in your relationships, the more harmony and love you experience. The more you see God in your work, the greater work you will do. The more you see God in communion, the more sure you will be of yourself and your commitments.

What will you discover? As a seeker, you will discover a world of God’s good.

It is natural to think about the things that you want or need, and this is okay, for every good desire begins as a God-motivated, Divine idea. But in your enthusiasm for the good that is on its way to you, do not overlook the abundance of blessings that you already have. You are a child of God, a loving and generous parent.

Through an awareness of God, you not only enjoy this heritage, but also the gift contained within the day. What do you see when you look around you? Surely, there is nothing as enriching as viewing your life from eyes that are aware of the living presence of God.

The more you see God in your daily life, the more appreciation you will have for all that you have now, and you will desire to share your good with others. God’s awareness in every form is meant to be shared, and we are generous with others, as God is with us.

So, today, you are a seeker on a spiritual quest to discover more of yourself, more in daily living, more to life in general, by finding a closer relationship in your awareness with God.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Prayer Exercise: Time tithe back to God, 6 min. in prayer at the top of the hour, for every waking hour.

Set your cell phones to vibrate every hour to remind. (This is eyes open, when you’re working prayer.)

Your life is enlivened. This is a great adventure; but, with God, any normal day can take on GREAT life and power. God can change your day, RIGHT NOW.

The pure, perfect eternal life of God enlivens you, this day. No matter when you are reading this, you can turn around your day by focusing on God, through prayer.

You pray a prayer of joyous thanksgiving that you are wondrously and intricately made, filled with the ever-renewing, ever-unfolding, eternal life of God.

When you acknowledge that the Spirit of God is with you, you also acknowledge that there is a great potential within you, and within this NOW moment of time, in this great opportunity called “Today.”

You are free to be that which you want to be, for God is your guidance and strength in this NOW moment.

Positive Daily Inspiration - December 25, 2022 - MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas from our family to your family, may God bless all you richly on this glorious holy day.

“While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”
Luke 2:6,7

I ask you to rest quietly and turn within to that inner place of prayerful joy that is within you.

As you do so, it will become a spiritual celebration of Christmas.

In the silence of prayer …

How joyous this year is! This year can be like no other Christmas has ever been. It is the birth of the Christ again, but anew, ever-unfolding, widening inside of our awareness. The wonders of the spiritually wondrous are upon us once again. The wonders can be felt in the recesses of your prayers.

The birth of Jesus Christ is the birth of a new beginning for humankind, and the birth of a new message, a new way for us to live our lives, to pray, and to believe.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

A soul prepares for eons of time, and then a Babe is born in a manger with a mission to bring a message to humankind everywhere. He is the great messenger of all time. Born as a human infant by his mother, the virgin Mary, He was born as we were born, into a human body but born with a spirit that knows the power of God. He was born a Babe who does not know human limitation.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Here was a Child who grew in body and mind; a child about God’s business. Truly, this was a king within the kingdom of expanding minds; a prince of hope, a prince of peace, a prince of love and prince of joy.

This Babe is bearing a gift from God for the minds of men and women of all the ages; a gift that is given to you now with no strings attached; a gift so great that it releases the chains of bondage on you – the shackles of illness, the prison of self-doubt, and the weight of poverty.

Accept the gift in the silence of prayer …

God’s message has come to earth in the temple of the body of the Babe to tell you of your specialness and of your spirituality. As the Star lead the wise men, Jesus’ messages shine to lead us to a brand new way of life and a new way of thinking. I ask you to rest in the silence, and again feel the Christmas story and allow the spirit of true Christmas to be born inside of you anew …

(Silence)

Dear God, This Christmas I accept the gift. I unwrap the package that has been wrapped since my birth.

Dear God, may Christ be born in me this sacred holiday. May I unwrap my spirituality that Jesus spoke of as being in me. Dear God, I now accept the gift. I accept the challenge, for it is my right to do so.

I am a child of the living God and I follow the Jesus Christ teachings to better my life and the lives of those everywhere. By following these teachings I become joy to my world this Christmas season.

I rest in the message of the Prince of Peace, and I dwell on that message in the silence of my being.

As I prepare to open my eyes, I realize what I have. Indeed, I have unwrapped the gift that is the spirituality inside of me. As I open my eyes, I realize that I will perceive differently and, indeed,

CHRISTMAS EVE!

Personal note: I send you my personal blessings and prayers for the grandest Christmas that you’ve ever had, I pray that every experience is filled with delight, and magic.

You may have heard this wonderful Christmas story; we share it EVERY Christmas Eve as a holiday tradition. Read it aloud to your family tonight.

This story embodies the meaning of Christmas.

Originally, this story was prepared for UPI News by Louis Cassels. The Christmas story of God born in a man escapes many moderns, because they try to find complex answers to their complex questions. This is utterly simple; so, to the skeptics, we offer a modern parable:

“There was once a kind, decent, mostly good man. The man I am talking about was not a Scrooge. He was generous to his family and upright in his dealings with other people. He just did not believe in all that “incarnation” stuff that churches proclaim at Christmastime.

He couldn’t pretend otherwise. He just couldn’t swallow the Jesus story about God coming to earth as a man -that a man could have God in him.

One year he said to his wife, “I’m truly sorry to distress you, but I’m not going to go to church with you on Christmas Eve.” So he stayed home while his family went to the evening service. As they drove away in the car, the snow began to fall. The flurries got heavier and heavier. He went to the window to watch them as they drove away, and to watch the snow as it collected on the ground. He finally went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper.

Minutes later, he was startled by a loud thudding sound, then another, and then another. He thought to himself, “Someone must be throwing snowballs against my living room window.” When he investigated, he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They had been caught in the storm, and in a desperate search for shelter, they had tried to fly through his large picture window.

He couldn’t just let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he went outside, and found them flopping around in the snow. He remembered a certain area that would be of help to them, an area that would help them live through this Christmas Eve night. The area was the barn where his children kept their pony.

It would provide a warm shelter, if he could only direct the birds to it.

Quickly, he put on his coat and galoshes, and trampled through the evening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide, and turned on the lights inside. But the birds wouldn’t fly into the barn. The man thought, “Food might entice them,” so he hurried back into the house to get something for the birds to eat, making a trail through the door inside the barn. But the birds didn’t pay any attention to the bread crumbs, anymore than they paid attention to the well-lit, warm, wide opening of the barn. To his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs, and continued to flop helplessly in the snow. He tried to catch them; he tried to shoo them into the barn by walking around them, waving his arms, but instead they scattered in every direction – except into the warm, lighted barn. It was then he realized, “They’re afraid of me.”

As he thought, he reasoned, “To them I must be a strange and terrifying creature. If only there was some way I could let them know they could trust me, that I’m not trying to harm them, only to help them. But how can I convince these birds? Everything I do frightens and confuses them.”

They wouldn’t follow; they wouldn’t be led; they wouldn’t be shooed or chased into the barn because they feared him.

As he stood there in the cold snow falling all around him, the thought came to him, “If only I could be a bird, then I could go with them and speak their language. I could tell them, ‘Don’t be afraid.’ I could show them the way to the warm, safe barn. But I’d have to be a bird. I’d have to be one of them so they would understand.”

At that moment, church bells began to ring in the distance. The sound reached his ears above the sound of the wind, and he stood there are listening to the bells actually feeling the glad tidings of Christmas for the first time. He sank to his knees in the snow as the birds flew into the barn.”

Jesus was born into a world that trembled with fear of a distant God – a society of people who would not even speak God’s name out of fear of death. Jesus Christ was born to bring this message: There is a light and warmth waiting for you in God. The way is open wide for you to enter therein to a FULL abundant life.

This is all because, 2000 years ago, a soul, prepared for eons of time, became incarnate in the body of a babe.

Tonight, around the world, congregations will light the fifth Advent candle placed in the middle of the Advent wreath, representing the birth of the Christ. All candles are lit tonight, representing hope, peace, love, joy, and now the birth of Jesus. It is a time to celebrate and to remember THE REASON for the season.

Dear God, we pray that You will bless in love and harmony the time spent with family and friends on this sacred celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid.

I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: “There is no Santa Claus,” she jeered. “Even dummies know that!”

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier, when swallowed with one of her “world-famous” cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus?” she snorted.

Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”

Off we went to Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days.

“Take this money,” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.

I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping.

For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class.

Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough; he had no coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.

“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

“Yes, ma’am, I replied shyly. “It’s for Bobby.”

The nice lady smiled at me. I didn’t get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) and wrote, “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it. Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy.

Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. “All right, Santa Claus,” she whispered, “get going.” I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven’t dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker’s bushes.

That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

I still have Grandma’s Bible, with the coat’s tag tucked inside: $19.95.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Into Thy hands, O Lord, we commit ourselves this Christmas. Give to each one of us a watchful, a humble, and the diligent spirit, that we may seek in all things to know Thy will, and when we know it may perform it perfectly and gladly, to the honor and glory of Thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Luke 2:15-16 “When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.”

Billy was getting cold sitting out in his back yard in the snow. Billy didn’t wear boots; he didn’t like them and anyway, he didn’t own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold. Billy had been in his backyard for about an hour, already. And, try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless, even if I do come up with an idea, I don’t have any money to spend.”

Ever since his father had passed away three years ago, the family of five had struggled. It wasn’t because his mother didn’t care, or try, there just never seemed to be enough. She worked nights at the hospital, but the small wage that she was earning could only be stretched so far.

What the family lacked in money and material things, they more than made up for in love and family unity. Billy had two older and one younger sister, who ran the household in their mother’s absence. All three of his sisters had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. Somehow it just wasn’t fair. Here it was Christmas Eve already, and he had nothing.

Wiping a tear from his eye, Billy kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street where the shops and stores were. It wasn’t easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to. Billy walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.

Everything seemed so beautiful and so out of reach.

It was starting to get dark and Billy reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly, his eyes caught the glimmer of the setting sun’s rays reflecting off of something along the curb. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime. Never before has anyone felt so wealthy as Billy felt at that moment.

As he held his new-found treasure, a warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store he saw. His excitement quickly turned cold when the salesperson told him that he couldn’t buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Billy presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother’s Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Billy and his ten-cent offering.

Then he put his hand on Billy’s shoulder and said to him, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.” As Billy waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls liked flowers.

The sound of the door closing as the last customer left jolted Billy back to reality. All alone in the shop, Billy began to feel alone and afraid. Suddenly the shop owner came out and moved to the counter.

There, before Billy’s eyes, lay twelve long stem, red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver bow. Billy’s heart sank as the owner picked them up and placed them gently into a long white box.

“That will be ten cents young man,” the shop owner said reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Billy moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true? No one else would give him a thing for his dime!

Sensing the boy’s reluctance, the shop owner added, “I just happened to have some roses on sale for ten cents a dozen. Would you like them?”

This time Billy did not hesitate, and when the man placed the long box into his hands, he knew it was true. Walking out the door that the owner was holding for Billy, he heard the shopkeeper say, “Merry Christmas, son.”

As the shopkeeper returned inside, the shopkeeper’s wife walked out. “Who were you talking to back there and where are the roses you were fixing?”

Staring out the window, and blinking the tears from his own eyes, he replied, “A strange thing happened to me this morning. While I was setting up things to open the shop, I thought I heard a voice telling me to set aside a dozen of my best roses for a special gift. I wasn’t sure at the time whether I had lost my mind or what, but I set them aside, anyway.

Then just a few minutes ago, a little boy came into the shop and wanted to buy a flower for his mother with one small dime.

“When I looked at him, I saw myself, many years ago. I, too, was a poor boy with nothing to buy my mother a Christmas gift. A bearded man, whom I never knew, stopped me on the street and told me that he wanted to give me ten dollars. “When I saw that little boy tonight, I knew who that voice was, and I put together a dozen of my very best roses.” The shop owner and his wife hugged each other, tightly, and as they stepped out into the bitter cold air, they somehow didn’t feel cold at all.

May this story instill the spirit of CHRISTmas in you.

WHAT WOULD YOU ASK GOD FOR THIS CHRISTMAS?

There’s a marvelous book entitled “Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting” by Lynn Grabhorn, published by Hampton Roads.

In it she shares this Christmas story.

“Its Christmas time, pretend that you are Santa Claus at the mall, replete with a scratchy beard and pillowed tummy. You’re listening to all the wee folk rattle off their long lists of wants, but after a while you decide to spread around some magic dust so that kids of any age will feel the urge to reveal some of their less socially acceptable wants.

“Up comes a little cutie-pie, about six, who hops up on to your knee. She starts to give you her list: a few special toys as seen on TV, and a couple of old standbys like a doll and a puppy. That’s it. Nothing new.

“So you spread your magic dust and out of comes: a big swing in the backyard, a daddy to be around more, a mommy who will take time to play, someone – anyone – who will believe about the pretty angels in the bedroom, and somebody to always make everything alright. Oh, and lots of brothers and sisters, please. Then she jumps down, happy as a lark.

“Do you remember what your secret wants were at six years of age?

“Next a tall, gangling 18-year-old comes up, having fun with the experience and quite willing to go along with the gag.

“‘All right now, what would you like Santa to bring you?’ Once again, even though the teenager is gladly entering into the spirit of this silliness, the list is alarmingly short. ‘Well, I will take that new car you got hidden in your sack, Santa. And I wouldn’t mind a few thousand dollars in my stocking for play money. And if you just happened to have a romance back there in your sleigh, hey, that would be cool!’

“You sprinkle your magic, the 18-year-old relaxes, and out of comes an amazing list of rightful wants, having to do with careers, and friends, and success, and fame, and clothes, and living conditions, and family – and genuine happiness – ‘whatever that is,’ he mumbles.

“Do you remember what your secret wants were at 18 years of age, and what dreams got stuffed away so that you could live in ‘the real world?’

“Finally comes the adult, gleefully hopping up on your Santa Claus knee as the kids watch and snicker.

“‘And what would you like, my friend,’ you ask expectantly. You’re dismayed to find that this person has the shortest list of anyone so far, as though every hope and dream ever owned just flew to the next galaxy. Oh, there’s the new house, and new car, and a flippant crack about winning the lottery, but that’s it. Quickly you sprinkle your magic dust. Nothing. You sprinkle more. Still nothing. You empty the bag. Slowly at first, as if having to be pulled up from the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean, comes a comment about having a pie shop. And another about learning to play the piano. A pause, and then another about taking a horticultural course at a local college. And another about building a unique kind of sailboat. This one’s on a roll now. There’s another about being able to financially help a friend open a dance school, and another about having an automatic garage door, and another about opening a summer camp for city kids and about having confidence to talk in front of a group of people. There’s one about improving relations with certain family members, and learning how to be more loving, and on, and on, and on. It took a full bag, but the dam holding back those long forgotten treasures finally broke.

“What dreams have you put aside? Your ambitions, your forgotten goals, even your littlest desires – what are they? WHAT ARE THEY?”

This is time to have a long talk with God and uncover again those dreams and desires that may be covered up with the dust of the years and in so doing, you will receive the gift of life – more abundantly than ever before.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, help me to rediscover my hidden dreams. Help me to believe bigger in You, and in myself, and in my dreams yet unfulfilled. Show me the way – I am ready.
