When Life Starts to Smell

“Oh, to be safe under the shelter of Thy wings.”
Psalms 61:4

“It was a summer night in the mid-1990s. I was standing on the front porch with my son. It was a perfect night, perfect temperature. I had my arm around my son, and we were looking out over the yard at the full moon.

“Across the driveway in the meadow on the other side of the yard there was a family of skunks. I said to Jonathan, ‘Isn’t that beautiful?’ They were walking across the meadow. We took out our binoculars and we looked at the skunks.

Then for some reason I turned around and I noticed my dog was outside. My dog “Bentley” was an overly friendly golden retriever, who lived for one thing, making new friends. I prayed an instant prayer that he wouldn’t see the skunks. Too late, he spotted them; I saw his whole expression change. He got a big smile on his face, and he thought, ‘New friends to play with.’ He was off chasing four surprised skunks who were not at all pleased to make the acquaintance of a 105-pound- bouncing-fur-ball lunging toward them.

“I saw it happen as if in slow motion. All four skunks raised their tails in unison. We heard from the front porch our dog yelp and whine. We saw a gaseous cloud arise like an atomic blast and encircle my dog. There was a slight breeze blowing from the direction of the skunks to our home. Within moments a strange smell encircled our entire house. It was so powerful I cannot even describe to you in this Positive Daily Inspiration how powerful it was except my son was crying. He said, ‘Daddy, make it stop.’

“I went into the kitchen to get my can of professional strength Lysol. When I was in the kitchen looking under the cupboard for the Lysol, my son let the dog in the house. The dog was about as low in spirit as a living creature could be. The dog was very embarrassed and so he ran for his hiding place under the bed in the back bedroom. This is my daughter Jennifer’s room.

She was away for the week at a church conference. I thought OK, once he squeezes under the bed, there is no removing him. I closed the door to her room, and I thought I would fumigate later before she gets back home on Sunday.

“My son and I went to bed. About two hours later, about midnight, a storm blew in. We heard the hard rain and the thunderstorm. My dog was very afraid of thunder. He was crying in the back bedroom, and I felt so sorry for him, but there was nothing I could do. I could not let him out. So, we went back to sleep. In the middle of the night, I awoke because I started to smell that overwhelming smell again. I turned on the light and in the middle of my king sized bed right beside me was the dog. I pulled the dog outside and put him on the front screened in porch because the thunderstorm had passed by this time. I thought that if he were on the front porch he would air out.

“The next day he had not aired out. As a matter of fact, the smell did not age well at all. I went to work the next day and I asked some of my friends what I should do. Several people who were there said to bathe him in tomato juice. I just stared at them. I thought, ‘Oh, that will be fun – bathing this 105-pound-fur-ball in tomato juice.’

“They said, ‘Well, you had better go to the wholesale club and buy gallons and gallons of tomato juice.’

“Those of you that have big dogs know what I’m talking about. That dog would have shaken so much that the whole yard would have looked like spaghetti. Tomato sauce would be over the dried yellow grass, while miraculously the dog would stay dry.

“I called the Vet, and I got a product called ‘Skunk Out.’ I poured it all over him, and I was so thankful it wasn’t tomato juice. When he got wet, it was just as I predicted, he shook, and his fur shed off all fluid. I had a lot more Skunk Out on me than he had on him. I literally had it on the back of my eyeballs. I washed the sheets, and I shampooed the entire carpeting in my house, I even repainted one room.”

We never did fully get the smell out of the back room. The dog hid under the bed of my daughter during the time Jennifer was at the church conference. Her room had a strange aroma around it. When she returned, she said, “Dad, there’s a strange smell in my backroom.” Jonathan and I just shrugged our shoulders acting like we did not know what the world it could be. To this day, I do not think she knows the full story.

Life is funny. Everything can be going well and in a second’s time you meet one of “life’s skunks.” It is OK as long as you recover, but if you don’t recover, if you hang on to the hurt, you become sick.

There’s a song from an old Broadway play that says, “I’m going to wash that man right out of my hair.” Sometimes, we have to wash the thoughts in our mind. We think nothing of taking a shower everyday cleansing away the old, but it is in the mental cleaning that we find lasting effects.

Only God can fully cleanse away life’s smells.

Ask God for help.

Dear God, when things are not going right, I will pray for Divine order, and I thank You for your help that is always available to me.

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is ‘UP.’ It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times, this little word has special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night. We are pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary.

In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for a-while, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP, for now … my time is UP!

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

‘If Ford had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.’

In response to Bill’s comments, Ford issued a press release stating:

If Ford had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash … Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Apple would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive – but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single ‘This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation’ warning light.

I love the next one!!!

7. The airbag system would ask ‘Are you sure?’ before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You’d have to press the ‘Start’ button to turn the engine off.

PS – I ‘d like to add that when all else fails, you could call ‘customer service’ in some foreign country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!!!!

Dear God, during my worship this Sunday, I hold all people who are near and dear to me in my prayers today for light, life, love, and wisdom.

I pray that they are fulfilled in heart and mind.

I pray that they continue to know the peace and love of God in everything they do and in all they aspire to be.

Dear God, bless my loved ones with the energy they need to complete every task, with prosperity enough to meet every bill, with strength enough to face every situation.

I know that You are protecting and guiding them every day of their lives. Thank You God for the blessing of their companionship and friendship in my life.

Today and every day, I send my loved ones prayers of heartfelt faith, love, and assurance.

We often share techniques to help you recall on a daily basis keeping your mind focused on God. In a tough economy, here is a great technique shared by this couple:

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband’s employer was quite generous as a host and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

“Look at it.” He said. “Read what it says.”

She read the words “United States of America.”

“No, not that; read further.”

“One cent?”

“No, keep reading.”

“In God we Trust?”

“Yes!”

“And?”

“And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin, I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust in God. Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in FULLY in God.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!”

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, “In God We Trust,” and had to laugh.

Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And God is patient …

And He said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, (teachable; like a dry sponge to water of new ideas, adventures and opportunities) you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:3

Can you imagine calling God on a special toll-free number and asking for the Department of Redundancy. You have decided the new was too tough, change was scary. “Give me more of the same,” you say. There was a sadness in your voice, a resignation that – what was, will be – what is.

Then God speaks to you, whispering in your ear, telling you it’s the baby steps that get you where you want to be in the end.

God says, “I will help. You will not be alone.”

We all want stability and security but that can never be found outside of yourself. Only within, spiritually, can you discover your spiritual oneness with the changelessness of God.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, (the heavenly lights – bright ideas that you need for your life; the wisdom from above) who does not change like shifting shadows.”
James 1:17

God is a genius, and those genius ideas are available to your own human mind. God is an inventor, and those inventions are available to your own human life, if you are willing to have them come through you. God has abilities and gifts that are waiting to be given to you NOW.

When you are in a situation that requires all your attention, you may not feel sure of yourself. You may feel you just don’t have it in you to do what is needed to do. You might feel that you have used up all your strength and don’t have it anymore to expend.

Maybe you are concerned that you will not live up to your own expectations or those of others, rather than let self-doubt build; you can get in contact with who you are again as a child of God.

You are created in God’s image and capable of great things WITH God’s help.

Our only problem with choosing redundancy over change is feeling that we don’t have it in us to do what is required. That is often a good place to be in, realizing that you have to call on something greater than yourself to muster up the courage and energy needed.

Keep this thought in your mind: God is with you, and willing to work within you. With that thought in mind, how can you ever doubt your own abilities?

Oneness is the sum total of one (you) and One (God) equaling ONE dynamo of power and accomplishment. You will feel good about who you are again and what you can accomplish. It is okay to feel good about yourself. God wants you to feel good about yourself. When you are filled with self-confidence about the self that is connected to your spiritual identity, you experience true confidence, and you radiate that confidence to others.

You are confident of who you are and what you can do with the unlimited resources available through your Divine heritage. Through your oneness with God you will leave behind the Department of Redundancy and start to live a new life. You will have a spiritual experience that gives you a positive self-image and the realization of your divine potential – and you will not be afraid to use it.

You will create a sacred space in your mind where you can retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle around you and be totally in the secure presence of God comforted in prayer. You begin to relax and feel powerful and content instead of agitated and afraid. You find greater joy when lingering in the glow of God’s presence than anything that you have known before. You are secure in the knowledge that you are being constantly cared for. This is what it means to be connected to your Creator. Your security comes not from the outer, but from deep inside of you. This feeling charges you and infills you with the power that is beyond yourself, and yet, comes through you, as you.

As you learn to enter this sacred space on a regular basis, at the same time every day, and more often if you are feeling stressed, you know that the door is wide open to greater good than you have ever realized or known.

The best is yet to be!

Dear God, I ask, and I desire, more than anything, to be one with You. I am tired of trying everything that I do – alone, I am willing, and I am ready, to become ONE with You in everything that WE say, WE feel, and WE do.

Consider a Dream

“I … remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the God truth that you have.”
2 Peter 1:12

Your mind is like an apartment house with many rooms. In the apartment house of the mind you live in mentally walk from room to room. However, one place that you seldom take time to notice is the top shelf of the catchall closet where you keep things from the past that were (and still are) too important, and too valuable to throw away. On that shelf many people have a dream that is gathering dust.

The dictionary defines dream as a strongly desired goal or purpose; something that fully satisfies a wish – or the verb “to dream,” which means to consider a possibility or to imagine.

Consider a possibility — what you can conceive in and believe in – YOU CAN ACHIEVE!

In Proverbs 29:18 our Bible says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” This is more than a slogan; it is meant for individual application by those who seek better life within the power of Christianity.

To have vision is to have the ability to look past contradictory facts and seeming obstacles to the possibility of fulfillment. It means the ability to look past seeming limitations of age, physical condition, and employment opportunities to the possibilities in God that will lead to the fulfillment of your dreams.

Take your dream off that upper shelf in the closet and really look at it.

What is YOUR dream?

Imagine or envision yourself doing or having the thing you dream. Take it to God in prayer. Pray in the way that you feel is right and good for you to pray. Be sure to add – I am grateful. Always thank God for helping you to make your dream come true.

Be aware that God knows your dream better than you do. God put it there. You are only interpreting it, so pray for the receptivity of the dream. When putting life in your dream do not mess around with facts. Never mind what the facts are or what you think the facts will be in the future. Work with the dream – let God take care of the facts.

An elderly man once said, “Looking back over my life, many of the successes and good fortunes I have sought, I did not find; many of the successes and good fortunes, I found, I had not sought. However, all of my successes and good fortunes came when I was seeking.”

Pray that you are guided by God in the way to actualize your dream. A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. Every remarkable thing begins with a forward step in faith.

God stands ready and waiting to help you make your dream come true for God’s will for you is the fullest measure of joy, fulfillment, and happiness.

The problem with most people is not that they dream too big, the problem with most people is they don’t dream at all. It is time to dream again!

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, I know that it is time for me to dream big again. Give me the dreams and the motivation and empowerment to work them through to the manifestation.

Help me to believe bigger things about my life today, and my life tomorrow, than I currently do. Help me to stop focusing on adversity and help me to focus on vision.

Thank You God!

The Best Picture of Peace

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”
Colossians 3:15

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace.

Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

All who saw this picture thought it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall.

This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush, a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest.

The King chose the second picture as the winner. “Because” explained the King, “Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart.”

“That is the real meaning of peace.”

If there is ever a time for peace it is now. Enter into the spirit by letting the peace of Christ reigning your mind, your heart, and your life.

Accept the gift of Christ peace.

Remember the promise, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”

Christ brings peace to the world; He brings peace to your world.

The government of the world is upon His shoulders; the government of your world is upon His shoulders.

Christ comes forth through you and through every person who opens themselves to Him.

Christ is come forth, is reborn in your life as peace.

Where there is discord, Christ brings harmony; where there is confusion, Christ brings order; where there is tension, Christ brings release.

Christ is your peace right now.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, deep at the center of my being there is a place of absolute stillness, of infinite calm. I rest there now in prayer. No matter how tumultuous my thoughts may be, this place of prayer remains quiet, serene, and undisturbed. In prayer I return.

I gather my wandering, restless, disturbed thoughts to this inner place of peace and stillness.

I rest in the Lord. I allow Christ to bless me as I become still in God’s presence.

I accept peace.

Tuesday Prayer and Meditation

“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty.”
Isaiah 55:11

In this time of prayer, we focus on God, and allow God to be our God that knows how to care for our every need.

Find that comfortable position. Take a deep breath in; release and let go. Let go of the past, and anything that would stand in the way of knowing God, God’s love we share together, and the peace that passes all understanding.

Now allow your human mind to be open. Gently open the heart. Allow the presence of love to be exposed.

I relax in the presence of God’s love. God is in my holy temple right now, and I rest in the heart of God.

I let go in the silence of prayer.

The past limitations begin to fade away now. I let go of any extraneous thoughts which come.

I let go of those I have judged, or criticized, and those who have hurt me along the way. I release all of these thoughts – all the judgments, all the unforgiveness, all the “I wish it were different” thoughts into God’s loving hands.

Now I turn my cheek in the other direction toward the Presence of God. My time is too precious to dwell on the past.

I want to know God, and to follow God, by expressing God’s love.

I am God’s beloved child, created in the image and after the likeness of goodness, perfection, joy, and harmony.

Although I made many mistakes along the way of life, there is something within me, that reaches out in love toward my own humanity.

Dear God, I am willing to love the unlovable part of myself – the part that makes mistakes, and the part that struggles and forgets the Truth of God. This is an experience of my own spirituality – to unconditionally love the unlovable.

As I bathe the unlovable of me in the pure love of God it is transformed.

Love within me, the healing power of the Divine, express uniquely through me. This is my purpose in life. As I begin with me, I also find that I reach out so much more easily. Now I am filled with compassion, instead of judgment, understanding, instead of criticism.

Dear God, truly we are one. As we walk this journey together, we are unfolding in the presence of God – the truth of our being. We reach out to one another, each different and yet with an equal blessing of healing, acceptance, beauty, and joy.

Thank You, God, for reminding me of who I am, and of why I am here.

And thank You for the great love that I am feeling expressing through me.

Today, we walk together, into another new dawn, alive with expectation of good, feeling blessed.

Thank You, God

Although prosperity can come to you through many channels, know that God is the source of ALL your prosperity. The more open and receptive you are to God’s good, the more opportunities you will have for receiving your abundant endless blessings. God’s will for you is success. God’s power is more powerful than outer conditions.

God will provide you with Divine ideas. These ideas present a better, more prosperous way of living. You can use these ideas in creative ways that multiply your abundance.

There is a right idea to fulfill every need. And God is the giver of those exacting ideas that can change your life, dramatically and sometimes instantly. Prayer prepares us to recognize our prosperity opportunities. As our awareness of God increases, so does our prosperity. God does not withhold any good from God’s beloved children. As we accept God’s good in thought, we open the way for good to become manifest in our lives.

Through the use of our own imagination, we can perceive the best of all possibilities for us to consider. We can weave the threads of our daily lives with creative, constructive change. We can view the world in the most positive manner.

Too often, precious time is wasted in worry. Anxiety, created by thoughts of trouble looming near, often blinds us to opportunity that is close. Instead, we can use our imagination to see great good awaiting us. The more we use our ability to see the best possible outcome and express our faith in the goodness of God, the more we are blessed.

We can move mountains of doubt, fear, and defeat as we imagine the road ahead filled with possibility. As our faith is quickened, our attitude is focused on the best possible solution. We move ahead knowing each step we take brings us closer to our answered prayers.

There is a law of attraction that I want to share with you. It is one of the great universal laws of God.

God’s law of attraction: “Like attracts like.”

What you attract into your life is what you think, what you feel, and what you consciously and unconsciously are. You can attract positive, happy experiences or negative, difficult ones. The more of God’s good you acknowledge and appreciate, the more kind and loving thoughts you send out, the more good you attract into your life.

You are aware of and give thanks for God’s prosperity everywhere, and by the law of attraction, you discover more prosperity every day. You think good thoughts, positive thoughts, constructive thoughts, and you reap the rich harvest of God’s abundance.

You are willing to take the ideas of God and become movable. So often, the human being facing adverse situations becomes unmovable. You are willing to be moved by God’s Divine power to arenas that will prove prosperous for you. You accept God’s ideas. You react positively to life, and life blesses you wondrously in return.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, I am ready. I am willing. I consent to Your Divine ideas working endlessly, tirelessly in my life. I pray for prosperity. I pray for success. I pray for a path that is ever-expanding in rewards. I pray that You will collaborate with me, and through me.

I give You all of me, use me so that I may be a person that makes a difference. I choose this day to follow You, to do whatever it takes, to become permanently prosperous.

A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dachshund along, for company. One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long, the dachshund discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch.

The dachshund thinks, “OK, I’m in deep trouble now!” Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here.”

Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. “Whew,” says the leopard.

“That was close. That dachshund nearly had me.”

Meanwhile, a monkey, who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed and figured that something must be up.

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here monkey, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine.”

Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks, “What am I going to do now?” But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet … and, just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says … “Where’s that monkey? I sent him off, half an hour ago, to bring me another leopard.”

You know you’re living in 2023 when …

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You text your coworker who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends is that they do not have a Facebook account.

6. When you go home, after a long day at work, you still answer the phone in a business manner.

7. When you make phone calls from home, you accidentally dial “9” to get an outside line.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, how could I not have faith in You, the Creator of the glorious universe filled with wonder and delight.

God, I am so thankful for Your love and care.

I am amazed at the extent of Your care when warm rays of sunshine that have traveled through the vastness of space touch my face. When a child reaches out in the joy of loving and touches me, I feel a greater understanding of my faith in You and Your unconditional love for me.

My faith in You increases with my growing awareness of Your presence.
As I discover more and more of the wonder and delight of Your creation,

SLOW DOWN THERAPY

1. Slow down; God is still in heaven. You are not responsible for doing it all yourself.

2. Remember a happy, peaceful time in your past. Rest there. Each moment has richness that takes a lifetime to savor.

3. Set your own pace. When someone is pushing you, it’s OK to tell them they are pushing.

4. Take nothing for granted: watch water flow, the corn grow, the leaves blow, your neighbor mow.

5. Taste your food. God gives it to delight as well as to nourish.

6. Notice the sun and the moon as they rise and set. They are remarkable for their steady pattern of movement, not their speed.

7. Quit planning how you are going to use what you know, learn, or possess. God’s gifts just are be grateful and their purpose will be clear.

8. When you talk with someone, don’t think about what you’ll say next. Thoughts will spring up naturally if you let them.

9. Talk and play with children. It will bring out the unhurried little person inside you.

10. Create a place in your home at your work in your heart where you can go for quiet and recollection. You deserve it.

11. Allow yourself time to be lazy and unproductive. Rest is not a luxury; it is necessity.

12. Listen to the wind blow. It carries a message of yesterday, tomorrow, and now. NOW counts.

13. Rest on your laurels. They bring comfort whatever their size, age, or condition.

14. Talk slower. Talk less. Do not talk. Communication is not measured by words.

15. Give yourself permission to be late sometimes. Life is for living, not scheduling.

16. Listen to the song of a bird; the complete song. Music and nature are gifts, but only if you are willing to receive them.

17. Take time just to think. Action is good and necessary, but it’s fruitful only if we muse, ponder, and mull.

18. Make time for play – the things you like to do. Whatever your age, your inner child needs re-creation.

19. Watch and listen to the night sky. It speaks.

20. Listen to the words you speak, especially in prayer.

21. Learn to stand back and let others take their turn as leaders. There will always be new opportunities for you to step out in front again.

22. Divide big jobs into little jobs. If God took six days to create the universe, can you hope to do any better?

23. When you find yourself rushing and anxious, stop. Ask yourself “WHY?” you are rushing and anxious. The reasons may improve your self-understanding.

24. Take time to read the Bible. Thoughtful reading is enriching reading.

25. Direct your life with purposeful choices, not with speed and efficiency. The best musician is one who plays with statement and meaning, not the one who finishes first.

26. Take a day off alone; make a retreat. You can learn from monks and hermits without becoming one.

27. Take time once a year for more than just a vacation; do something spiritual to renew you.

28. Work with your hands. It frees the mind.

29. Take time to wonder. Without wonder, life is merely existence.

30. Sit in the dark. It will teach you to see and hear, taste and smell.

31. Once in a while, turn down the lights, the volume, the throttle, the invitations. Less really can be more.

32. Let go. Nothing is usually the hardest thing to do – but often it is the best.

33. Take a walk – but do not go anywhere. If you walk just to get somewhere, you sacrifice the walking.

34. Count your friends. If you have one, you are lucky. If you have more, you are blessed. Bless them in return.

35. Count your blessings – one at a time and slowly

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, please teach me how to slow down so that I may rediscover what is missing in my life. God, help me not to miss anything.
