(Submitted with our great thanks)

“Whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with the growth that is from God.”
Colossians 2:19

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice.
On one woman’s tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph:
“Tried everything twice. Loved it both times!”

2. Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
(Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)

3. Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
Never let the brain get idle.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath.
And if you have a friend who makes you laugh,
spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6. The tears happen:
Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.
LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love:
Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health:
If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county,
to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
I love you, my special friend.

11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second chance.

Remember! Lost time can never be found.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

I knowledge my oneness with God.
I acknowledge my oneness with Divine order.
I recognize that I am now in God’s Divine order, and that Divine order is in every part of me.
I accept and cooperate with the Divine order of God that is moving through every area of my life now.
I know that the Divine order governs the moon, stars, sun, and earth also regulate the rhythm of my life.
To know Divine order reins in all creation is good, but I know now, and I feel what now is moving through me.
The reality of Divine order is established now in my mind and heart.
The way is now open for Divine order to show forth in all the events of my life – from the seemingly insignificant happening to those great experiences that change the course of my life.
I make right use of Divine order by holding to thoughts of God’s Divine order, and I experience the complete order and the peace of God.

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen

Positive Daily Inspiration – November 24, 2023 – INNER HOUSEKEEPING

INNER HOUSEKEEPING

a gift from www.PositiveChristianity.net

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o ̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“Judge not, that you be not judged.”
Matthew 7:1

The more loving, tolerant, and accepting of others you have become, the more spiritual you are.

It has been said, when we put down other people, the unconscious cannot distinguish between the subject and object. When we criticize another, that judgment does not just come home to roost – it never leaves the roost but operates on us instantly. Our judgmental thoughts and words evoke inner emotions, and most of the time, they trigger less than healthy body chemistry in addition to the negative emotional states they create.

They are all put in permanent storage INSIDE US!

If we make being critical and judgmental of others a habit, over time, we dull our senses and are oblivious to the negative feelings generated in our bodies. It takes effort to regain that awareness and it requires a lot of “Inner Housekeeping.”

Anatole France once said, “You must be dead in the one life, to enter the next.” He was not speaking of death in the physical body but instead a complete death to opinions, false beliefs, and habits – so one can move on to live in a higher way.

This is the final test of a human: their respect for those who can be of no possible service to them. The spiritual person gives first in attitude, and in thoughts held in mind concerning others. This spiritual person doesn’t care about getting something back from the person given to, they only seek to give.

Intolerance, it is well known, is most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by the higher education of common association; they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.

The Dalai Lama said, “This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher. We can never obtain peace in the outer world, until we make peace with ourselves.”

1 Peter 3:8-11 states, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.”

In Ephesians 4:2, our Bible states, “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.”

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

The Divine Prescription: The activity of God is the only power at work in my mind, heart, and life. All false beliefs, all negative appearances are dissolved now by the loving, freeing, forgiving action of God. I am whole, strong, and free as God created me to be.

I let the life, and the power of God flow into my awareness now. I do not concern myself with believing anything else. I let God’s Truth, deeper than the belief system, emerge.

I am open to the truth behind these words.

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATION:

(Say aloud, about any intolerance, false belief about another, or general unacceptance of someone) “IT ENDS HERE, IT ENDS NOW, IT ENDS WITH ME!”

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

“Give to yourself first, “First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”
Epictetus

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

a gift from www.PositiveChristianity.net

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o ̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“Rooted and built up in Christ, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and OVERFLOWING WITH THANKFULNESS.”
Colossians 2:7

If you had read the front-page story of the San Francisco Chronicle many years ago, you would have read about a female Humpback Whale which had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighed down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environment group for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

She then came back to each diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around … she was thanking them. Some said that it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The person who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

This is our wish for you this Thanksgiving.

In England, an ordinary person is called the commoner. There are billions of commoners the world over.

Let me introduce you to a commoner in our society. Her mythical name is “Molly SeeNoGood.”

She wakes up tired every day; life is taking its toll. She is critical of everything. Most of her communications with others has sunk to the depths of negativity. Criticizing has become a way of life for Ms. SeeNoGood. She could not perceive good if it stared her directly in the face, because she wears bitter sunglasses that color everything in the dark shades of the hellish life she has created for herself. She blames everyone and everything outside of herself for her bad life; but what happens to her has very little to do with events. Molly has not said “thank you” in years, and Molly is drowning in her self-created darkness. Molly does not live life; she simply exists in a day-to-day existence, marking time by the events of crises.

Everyone knows someone like Molly who is living a common life. It was sad in Jesus’ day, and it is equally sad today.

Let’s visit next with an un-commoner: a person who rises above mediocrity to a new level of living. His name is “Seymour Good.”

He no longer allows outer events to rob him of his daily life, and he has a giving, thankful attitude. He is an adventurer who goes into each day with an expectation of good. He always wears the garment of a smile. It is the main staple of his wardrobe, and he gives it fully to any, and all. His smile is just an outer expression of his inner-perception of life; he sees good everywhere, in everyone, and in everything. He gives thanks to God, constantly.

I urge you to spend the entire Thanksgiving holiday being a Seymour Good.

Each soul must learn to live life because we are not born with instructions. The greatest discovery is that each person can rise above a common life. We all strive for outer success, but the real success is found within, in the realm of perceptions. Life is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of positive possibility. The more you give thanks for these possibilities, the more you will have things to give thanks for.

Deuteronomy 8:10 – “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land God has given you.”

You have heard the saying “Life is for the living;” but life is just as much for those who can perceive it – life is for the perceptive. Your perception of life determines what your life will be.

When you give thanks, you are living from the altitude of the highest perception of life.

Thanksgiving is a powerful, spiritual exercise that can turn your life around. “Thank You God,” is the ultimate prayer.

Prayer is not just in asking, in its truest sense; it is acknowledging God’s actions. Prayer does not change God; God is all-good and all-giving. Prayer changes us and makes us more perceptive of God’s good that is available, right now, in our lives – if we can accept it. True prayer is acceptance of the Divine good and acknowledging it. After receiving such a gift, all the cells of your body have the urge to cry out – “Thank You God!”

Every day, you can say thank you to all that is around you and within you. You can perceive the good and appreciate it. You can agree to stop taking life for granted, wake up to your good, and realize the source of that good – God.

I like to end every day by giving thanks for the good I have received that day. I like to begin every day by giving thanks, in advance, for the good that is going to come into my life that day, the wonderful people I will meet, and the incredible blessings that day will hold for me.

Every day, you have a choice to live life as a commoner or to rise and become uncommon.

Every day, the decision must be made anew.

Thanksgiving is a spiritual exercise of review. By studying the past and being thankful for it, we lay the foundation for our increasing ability to be thankful for today.

Thanksgiving becomes a way of life rather than just a once-a-year holiday. It is a focus, a reward; it is true love in expression to God. To say thank you and mean it from the depths of your soul is one of the greatest experiences of this life. Whether you say thank you to God, or to another person, in its truest sense, is the finest gift you can give. Never miss the opportunity to say thank you. You will discover – as Seymour Good discovered – that the perception of living within you, of giving thanks for everything, is the gateway to heaven.

Being thankful can change your perception, your life, and your level of happiness.

I have a smile on my face because I am thinking about you reading this. I thank you for being a part of my wonderful life, and a part of the miracle of this ministry.

The entire Positive Christianity family wishes you, a very blessed Thanksgiving.

GIVING THANKS

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o ̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Serve the LORD with gladness: come before God’s presence with singing.
Know ye that the LORD is God: it is God that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are God’s people, and the sheep of God’s pasture.
Enter into God’s gates with thanksgiving, and into God’s courts with praise: be thankful unto God and bless God’s name.
For the LORD is good; God’s mercy is everlasting; and God’s truth endureth to all generations.”
Psalm 100

Max Lucado has written about an old man walking down a Florida beach. The sun sets like an orange ball on the horizon. The waves slap the sand. The smell of saltwater stings the air. The beach is vacant. No sun to entice the sunbathers. Not enough light for the fishermen. So, aside from a few joggers and strollers, the gentleman is alone.

He carries a bucket in his bony hand – a bucket of shrimp. It’s not for him. It’s not for the fish. It’s for the sea gulls.

He walks to an isolated pier cast in gold by the setting sun. He steps out to the end of the pier. The time has come for the weekly ritual.

He stands and waits.

Soon the sky becomes a mass of dancing dots. The evening silence gives way to the screeching of birds. They fill the sky and then cover the moorings. They are on a pilgrimage to meet the old man.

For a half hour or so, the bushy-browed, shoulder-bent gentleman will stand on the pier, surrounded by the birds of the sea, until his bucket is empty.

But even after the food is gone, his feathered friends still linger. They linger as if they’re attracted to more than just food. They perch on his hat. They walk on the pier. And they all share a moment together.

The old man on the pier couldn’t go a week without saying “thank you.”

His name was Eddie Rickenbacker. If you were alive in October 1942, you probably remember the day that he was reported missing at sea.

He had been sent on a mission to deliver a message to Gen. Douglas MacArthur. With a hand-picked crew in a B-17 known as the “Flying Fortress,” he set off across the South Pacific. Somewhere the crew became lost, the fuel ran out, and the plane went down.

All eight crew members escaped into the life rafts. They battled the weather, the water, the sharks, and the sun. But most of all, they battled the hunger. After eight days, their rations were gone. They ran out of options. It would take a miracle for them to survive.

And a miracle occurred.

After an afternoon devotional service, the men said a prayer and tried to rest. As Rickenbacker was dozing with his hat over his eyes, something landed on his head. He would later say that he knew it was a sea gull. He didn’t know how he knew; he just knew. That gull meant food … if he could catch it. And he did.

The flesh was eaten. The intestines were used as fish bait. And the crew survived.

What was a sea gull doing hundreds of miles away from land?

Only God knows.

But whatever the reason, Rickenbacker was thankful. As a result, every Friday evening, this old captain walked to the pier, his bucket full of shrimp and his heart full of thanks.

Thanksgiving Prayer and Meditation

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o ̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“Enter into God’s gates with thanksgiving, and into God’s courts with praise: be thankful unto God and bless God’s name. For the LORD is good; God’s mercy is everlasting; and God’s truth endureth to all generations.”
Psalm 107:1

I’d like to share with you an interpretation of The Lord’s Prayer which was written by author James C. Lewis:

“Our Father, who dwells with us, all-powerful is Thy nature. Thy perfection come, Thy good be done, in manifestation as it is in Spirit. Give us this day Divine ideas, and forgive our mistakes, as we forgive the mistakes of others; and lead us not in doubt, but deliver us from ignorance, for Thine is the perfection, the power, and the joy, eternally. Amen.”

As children in Christianity, many learn to sing a song in Sunday School that includes the words:

Count your blessings,
Name them one by one;
Count your many blessings,
See what God has done.

We are here in this prayer place to awaken our spirituality with Thanksgiving. We are here to be grateful for all the lovely things we recall. We are here to prepare our minds and our hearts for a brand-new day ahead. We are here to review the blessings and to be assured of the calm, lasting Presence of our God.

We pause and say thank you, God, for all the blessings that are nourishing and strengthening our soul.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

The spirit of praise and thanksgiving is something we now make a vital, indispensable part of our everyday life. We have a perceptive heart that sees that God bestows upon us much better than we need for our existence.

The mere need for shelter is enriched by warmth and comfort. Food to sustain the body often delights and is served with imagination to please the eye. It is frequently enhanced by interesting conversation and good fellowship. The light and the air and the water necessary to life are set before us in a brilliant sunset over the sea in a masterpiece of Divine Creation. The wind sings a song on a summer night. The rain quenches the earth’s thirst and nourishes beautiful crops and fragrant flowers.

We give thanks for the extras in life, the beauty and that which induces wonder inside of us. We look at our needs and see how simple they are compared to God’s blessings. We take time to go over every blessing and appreciate all the good things God has done for us. We discover that there is far too much beauty and goodness in life to simply fulfill daily purposes. We realize that there is a lavish hand of God that spreads God’s gifts over all the world into every life, touching with grace and generosity every receptive soul.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Thank You, God. We are aware of the love, the goodness and the benefits from You. We are filled with an uplifting and an overwhelming sense of gratitude as words and feelings merge into a warm flow of gladness and exhilaration. We discover that thankfulness lifts out of depression, out of doubt, elevates our own individual soul to a height of spiritual joy and security. Our life expands as we look for and give thanks for appreciations of God. Praise and thanksgiving make us more aware of the good about us. Our thoughts and prayers reach out to include others.

We count our blessings. We learn that God comes to us in every experience and in every person if we are open to God’s Presence. We find in the accumulation of little joys, of small blessings heaped upon other small blessings, that life adds up to a deep and priceless adventure.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

We each know the Truth of God. THE LOVING PRESENCE OF GOD PROVIDES FOR MY EVERY NEED. I AM THANKFUL FOR WHAT I HAVE AND FOR WHAT I AM ABOUT TO RECEIVE.

In this spirit of thankfulness, we pray, with a very grateful heart.

In a spirit of thanksgiving and overwhelming gratitude, we say silently, thank You, God.

In Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

Positive Daily Inspiration – November 20, 2023 – Love Is Remembering

Positive Daily Inspiration - November 20, 2023
Love Is Remembering

a gift from www.PositiveChristianity.net

̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶ o O o̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶̶

“The love of God and peace will be with you.”
2 Corinthians 13:11

A man that I had the honor to work with for many years, was minister and author J. Sig Paulson.

He wrote a classic piece on love that I share with you.

Love is remembering:
To love the Lord, our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, with all of our strength;
To love our self;
To love our neighbor as our self;
To owe no one anything but love;

Love is remembering:
To condemn no one, to keep no score of a wrong, to take no delight in the shortcomings or mistakes of others, to bear no grudges.

Love is remembering:
To be patient, kind, generous, resilient;
And be receptive to the highest and best in all.

Love is remembering:
To set others free, to give them living, growing space – not to be possessive or jealous.

Love is remembering:
Not to boast, not to be conceited, not to be rude or thoughtless.

Love is remembering:
To give as we would receive, to forgive that as we would be forgiven, to bless as we would be blessed, to free as we would be freed.

Love is remembering:
To let our light shine, not only when our world seems to be peaceful, harmonious, and in tune but also when it may appear warlike, inharmonious, and out of tune.
Love is not dependent on outer appearances for its operation.
In fair weather and in foul it shines, like the sun, on the deserving and the undeserving; it sends its healing balm on the just and unjust, it shares its treasures with the beautiful and the unbeautiful, the weak and the strong, the lovable and the unlovable.

Love is remembering:
To believe that there is no limit to love’s endurance, no end of its trust, no fading of its hope.
Love can outlast anything; love never fails.

Love is remembering:
To realize that love is the best way of all, that without it all other gifts are “a noisy gong or a clanging symbol.”
Without love all work, sacrifice, knowledge is meaningless.

Love is remembering:
To have faith that though now we perceive reality mostly “through a glass, darkly,” a glass distorted by fear and false beliefs, the timing is inevitably coming when we will be finished with childlike views and will see reality as it truly is.
And when we see reality as it truly is, we see that ALL is love.

Love is remembering:
To let all things be made new in love, and to give ourselves permission to become new creatures of love and life and light.

Love is remembering:
To give thanks that it is our Creators good pleasure to give us the kingdom of love, life, forgiveness, freedom, and that it is our good pleasure to accept the kingdom and share it with our world.

Love is remembering:
To remember that God is love, that in our Creator there is no darkness, condemnation, nor punishment, and that we are extensions of the infinite love.

Love is remembering:
To let go of fear, resentment, and guilt as they come into awareness, either through quiet contemplation or when they are triggered by the actions or inactions of others. Perfect love casts out fear, resentment, guilt.

Love is remembering:
To remember that our neighbor is also an extension of the infinite love, that we are created to be sons and daughters of our Creator, who is love, as we share this beautiful place called Earth.

Love is remembering:
To know these things about love, but to also know that to be blessed we are not only to think about them in the lofty reaches of prayer but to do them in the daily, down to earth relationships and activities of this very practical world where we live.
Love is rooted in heaven, but it must be lived in the earth.
Practice proves loves power and reality.
Love is nothing until it is shared in living.

Love is remembering:
To see yourself as a son or daughter of God and to treat yourself like one, not theoretically but practically, to treat yourself with respect, affection, appreciation, even admiration in the events of your 24-hour day – at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, waking, sleeping, walking, listening, talking, living, thinking, feeling.
After all, you are the handiwork of God, awakening to and unfolding to your potential that Jesus constantly reminded you about.

Love is remembering:
To see others in your life as sons and daughters of God and to treat them as such, not just in moments of deep insight but especially in the tug and pull of every day, ordinary, and extraordinary exchange of thought, feeling, and action.
After all, they, too, are the handiwork of God, awakening to and unfolding their potential.
Jesus told us to love them.

Love is remembering:
To be true to the true nature of our self which is love, to remember who we are, what we are, why we are, and where we are going.

Love is remembering:
To remember that love is our God;
Life is our religion;
Humanity is our church;
Loving our neighbor and our self is our daily worship.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, show me if there is someone in my life who would be blessed by my sharing the Christ light with them.
I know that there is always someone close in need of a kind word, a loving deed, a faith-filled prayer, or a warm smile – show me that person.
Help me not to be blind to the needs of others that are near me this day.
Help me to reach out to others with love, compassion, and care.
Help me to raise my world to a new level of peace and understanding through my actions.

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATION:

As I let my Christ light shine, I bless others with God’s love through me.

POSITIVE DAILY QUOTE:

“For freedom Christ has set us free … “
Galatians 5:1

A woman calls her husband and sounding really stressed says,

“Please come over here and help me. I have a jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get it started. I’ve been working on it for hours!!!”

Her husband asks, “What is it supposed to be when it is finished?”

The wife says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a tiger.”

Her husband decides to go over and help with the puzzle.

She lets him in the room and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table.

He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a tiger.”

He takes her hand and says, “Second, I want you to relax.

Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then … ” he sighed, ” … Let’s put all these Frosted Flakes back in the box.”

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.

Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play.

“Here’s a copy of the service,” he said impatiently. “But, you’ll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.”

During the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.”

At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

___________

A contestant on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” had reached the final plateau. If she answered the next question correctly, she would win $1,000,000. If she answered incorrectly, she would pocket only the $32,000-milestone money.

And as she suspected it would be, the million-dollar question was no pushover. It was, “Which of the following species of birds does not build its own nest, but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other birds? Is it

A) the condor;

B) the buzzard;

C) the cuckoo; or

D) the vulture?”

The woman was on the spot. She did not know the answer.

And she was doubly on the spot because she had used up her 50/50 Lifeline and her Audience Poll Lifeline. All that remained was her Phone-a-Friend Lifeline, and the woman had hoped against hope that she would not have to use it. Mainly because the only friend that she knew would be home she didn’t think she knew anything about birds.

But the contestant had no alternative. She called her friend and gave her the question and the four choices. The friend responded unhesitatingly: “That’s easy. The answer is C: The cuckoo.”

The contestant had to make a decision and make it fast. She considered employing a reverse strategy and giving any answer except the one that her friend had given her. And considering that her friend was not a bird person, that would seem to be the logical thing to do. On the other hand – the friend had responded with such confidence, such certitude, that the contestant could not help but be persuaded.

“I need an answer,” said the host.

Crossing her fingers, the contestant said, “C: The cuckoo.”

“Is that your final answer?” asked the host.

“Yes, that is my final answer.”

Two minutes later, the host said, “I regret to inform you that that answer is … absolutely correct. You are now a millionaire!”

Three days later, the contestant hosted a party for her family and friends – including the woman who had helped her win the million dollars.

“Jenny, I just do not know how to thank you,” said the contestant. “Because of your knowing the answer to that final question, I am now a millionaire. And do you want to know something? It was the assuredness with which you answered the question that convinced me to go with your choice. By the way … HOW did YOU know the right answer?”

“Oh, come on,” said the friend. “Everybody knows that cuckoos don’t build nests. They live in clocks.”

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

A BLESSING FOR YOUR CHURCH

This is God’s house.

May all who come here not only find out about God but find God.

May there be beauty in this place, but especially may it be a place where men and women become aware of the beauty in themselves.

May this be a place of worship. May this be a place of instruction. May this be a place of singing. May this be a place of prayer.

But for us who worship and take instruction and sing and pray, may this always be a place of inner-stillness, where we may listen and hear when God speaks.

May whoever ministers here minister in love. May whoever teaches here teach truth. May whoever serves here serve pleasantly.

May everyone come into this house in expectation and go with thanksgiving, and May anyone who comes needing help go feeling blest.

May this be such a house that Jesus Christ – or any stranger, even one of the least – would feel in it that they were with friends.

– James Dillet Freeman

POSITIVE DAILY AFFIRMATION:

God touches my life manifesting prosperity and abundance. My life is enriched.

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:31-32

Forgiveness in first century Christianity means self-release. It is releasing the poison from inside of you. It has little to do with the other person. Forgiveness is releasing the prisoner, and then realizing the prisoner was you.

Forgiving may help the forgiver more than the forgiven.

A dear woman shares her story:

As everything unraveled on a 25-year marriage and my husband moved out of the only home our daughter had ever known, I felt huge relief our only child was 20 at that time – it made everything simpler. Or so I thought. Because she wasn’t a minor, I didn’t have to negotiate about custody and child support, didn’t have to put up with his coming around to see her, and didn’t have to try to explain the inexplicable to a young child. Mostly, though, I was relieved because I thought it would be less complicated emotionally for her at that age. She was away at college, a young adult, not subject to the day-to-day difficulties or emotional turmoil of her parents being in two households.

In an attempt to ensure that my crushing hurt did not affect their relationship, I had said to my daughter and her dad that the nature and quality of their relationship from that point on would be up to them. I would not interfere, but neither would I facilitate. I tried to be glad when I saw his phone number on the phone bill from her college dorm; but I’ll confess that on more than one occasion in those early days I slipped into revenge fantasies, wishing with more than a little shame that I could be one of ‘those’ divorced parents who use their children to ‘get at’ an ex-spouse. My anger waned in intensity over the following months, but on occasion glowed white hot, briefly and unexpectedly, for reasons that still elude me. At those times, I exercised that remarkable ability so many women have to feign: pleasantness and serenity while simultaneously holding down an ugly knot of hurt and anger that clamored for attention the way curdled milk waits to erupt from a soured stomach.

I observed my daughter’s next few years mostly from afar as she concentrated on her studies, became active in a sorority, made new friends, played on her university’s tennis team, enjoyed snow-skiing, camping, boating and beach trips with friends, and fell in and out of love. I naturally wondered at times what impact the end of her parents’ 25-year marriage might have on her. From what I could see, my daughter’s strong spirit, sense of independence, self-confidence, good humor and zest for life were serving her well. After a while, I even congratulated myself on our having handled things in a way that had left her relatively unscathed.

Reality hit hard one evening during her Christmas vacation six months before she was to graduate from college. That’s when my daughter taught me an important lesson – children whose parents divorce are forever changed, regardless of their age or life situation when the split happens. Sitting at the dinner table that night in my new house, which still didn’t feel like home to either of us, she hesitantly told me she was dreading her college graduation.

“All my friends’ families will be coming, and there are dinners and receptions all weekend,” she said, putting her elbows on the table her father had sanded and stained when she was a little girl. “And every time you see or talk about Dad, you cry and feel sad. I can’t tell one of you not to come. You’re my parents. It makes me not want to go through graduation.”

I felt as though I’d been hit with something big and hard.

I couldn’t breathe. And then tears – those damn tears – began to course down my cheeks and drip onto my chest. I felt hot, and the light over the table seemed to spin and flash as I struggled for composure. I was stunned and stung – stunned to discover that my involuntary tears had cut so deeply into her life and soul; stung that my hanging on to sadness and a sense of loss was responsible for her wanting to skip an important milestone in her life. I didn’t believe for a second, she really would miss the festivities, but to know she saw my continued grieving as and inevitable dark cloud over her graduation weekend was devastating.

I’ve always believed that actions follow thoughts. Now would come a test of that belief. “I know it wasn’t easy to say that,” I managed to mutter. After a pause and a big sigh, I continued, with a note of determination in my voice that I didn’t feel. “It’s six months until graduation. You know both your dad and I love you and want your graduation and all your special moments in life to be unmarred by what’s gone on between us. I promise you that on your graduation weekend, you don’t have to worry about my crying. We’ll be fine.”

And we were. Tears did fall that day, but they were shared with my ex-husband as we stood arm in arm watching the daughter we’d raised walk across the stage to accept her diploma. He even carried an extra handkerchief for me, as he had all those years we were married. That’s when I knew my choice to spend time with him during the months after her sad dinner table confrontation had been worthwhile. By “practicing” being cordial and friendly, by sharing everyday conversation and meals, by saying why I was doing this, I had moved beyond the automatic response of tears. I think we actually ended up enjoying ourselves; and it wasn’t long before I realized that forgiveness had crept into my heart, softening that hard knot of anger and hurt.

It was a turning point – not only for the three of us but for our extended family and friends as well. Now my sister and mother and friends could once again be friendly without feeling disloyal to me. The cordiality and friendliness we felt that spring has continued in the years since, making subsequent visits with our daughter more enjoyable for everyone. And now we’re all immersed in planning another milestone – our daughter’s wedding. In the fall, my ex-husband and I will sit side by side once again, on the front pew in the church this time, perhaps sharing a handkerchief once more.

A beloved teacher once said to me, “Forgiving may help the forgiver more than the forgiven.” She was right. – Susan Carver Williams
