Birth of the song “Precious Lord”

I’ve never heard this story before. It gives the words to the song even more meaning!

Back in 1932 I was 32 years old and a fairly new husband. My wife, Nettie and I were living in a little apartment on Chicago’s Southside. One hot August afternoon I had to go to St. Louis, where I was to be the featured soloist at a large revival meeting.

I didn’t want to go. Nettie was in the last month of pregnancy with our first child. But a lot of people were expecting me in St. Louis. I kissed Nettie good-bye, clattered downstairs to our Model A and, in a fresh Lake Michigan breeze, chugged out of Chicago on Route 66. However, outside the city, I discovered that in my anxiety at leaving, I had forgotten my music case. I wheeled around and headed back. I found Nettie sleeping peacefully. I hesitated by her bed; something was strongly telling me to stay. But eager to get on my way, and not wanting to disturb Nettie, I shrugged off the feeling and quietly slipped out of the room with my music.

The next night, in the steaming St. Louis heat, the crowd called on me to sing again and again. When I finally sat down, a messenger boy ran up with a Western Union telegram. I ripped open the envelope. Pasted on the yellow sheet were the words: YOUR WIFE JUST DIED. People were happily singing and clapping around me, but I could hardly keep from crying out. I rushed to a phone and called home. All I could hear on the other end was “Nettie is dead. Nettie is dead.”

When I got back, I learned that Nettie had given birth to a boy. I swung between grief and joy. Yet that night, the baby died. I buried Nettie and our little boy together, in the same casket.

Then I fell apart. For days I closeted myself. I felt that God had done me an injustice. I didn’t want to serve Him anymore or write gospel songs. I just wanted to go back to that jazz world I once knew so well.

But then, as I hunched alone in that dark apartment those first sad days, I thought back to the afternoon I went to St. Louis. Something kept telling me to stay with Nettie. Was that something God? Oh, if I had paid more attention to Him that day, I would have stayed and been with Nettie when she died. From that moment on I vowed to listen more closely to Him. But still I was lost in grief.

Everyone was kind to me, especially a friend, Professor Fry, who seemed to know what I needed. On the following Saturday evening he took me up to Malone’s College, a neighborhood music school. It was quiet; the late evening sun crept through the curtained windows. I sat down at the piano, and my hands began to browse over the keys. Something happened to me then. I felt at peace. I felt as though I could reach out and touch God. I found myself playing a melody, one into my head-they just seemed to fall into place:

Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand!
I am tired, I am weak,
I am worn,
Through the storm,
Through the night lead me on to the light,
Take my hand, precious Lord,
Lead me home.

The Lord gave me these words and melody; He also healed my spirit. I learned that when we are in our deepest grief, when we feel farthest from God, this is when He is closest, and when we are most open to His restoring power. And so I go on living for God willingly and joyfully, until that day comes when God will take me and gently lead me home.

The great gospel writer Thomas Andrew Dorsey wrote this song. What a wonderful story of how God CAN heal the brokenhearted.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, You are my help in every need.

You are here. I know, from the core of my being, that You are with me now. Through You, and only through You, I can overcome any obstacle to peace of mind. I can overcome any limitation. I can live in freedom and self-mastery.

Through Your activity, God, I feel a comfort and a tranquility that passes human understanding.

Jesus promised, “You will know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free.”

Now it is time for me to let go of my lists of human weaknesses and limitations. You free me now, God, to live a fuller, happier, more useful and more satisfying life.

Now it is time for me to let go of my human sense of trouble and difficulties. I let go of everything not to the level of Christ consciousness and center my full attention, my whole being, on Your spiritual help with me and all around me.

Dear God, I give You my full attention in this moment, and I see the result. I get my personal self out of the way so that the Divine can emerge.

In my awareness, I feel a harmonizing calm, a complete confidence and the victorious blessedness that always emanates from Your close Presence and quiet, steady, purposeful activity.

Harmony and wholeness, vitality, power and plenty, You become that to me AND MORE.
God, You are with me, right now.
I give You my full human attention.
I go to You every day, abide in You every moment, and consciously let You perform Your work.
I consciously let You live in me and through me and all around me, and I am aided, strengthened, and guided in ways that I have not yet dreamed of in human mind.

We are alike, you and I.

We are more alike than we are separate.

We are united in the same truth: We live in the presence of God, and our lives are each filled with the same Divine help.

We may not know why we are where we are in our life experiences, or where we will go in reaching our destinies, but we do know that we share the same God.

God that created the earth we each are standing on, and the air we each are breathing – also created us.

The Gospel according to John tells us: “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

It does not matter why we are here. What does matter is that we learn and we grow while we are here.

In John 17:21 our Bible states, “You … are in me and I am in you.”

God lives in you, and in me, and in every person on earth! God’s Spirit within is what connects us all in a unity of purpose, a sacred union that binds us together in love. We are each soul mates.

Gandhi wisely said, “If you don’t find God in the next person you meet, it’s a waste of time looking for God further.”

Just as each drop in the ocean is part of a greater whole, each person on earth is an important part of God’s family, a vital link in our connection with one another. Each drop of the ocean contains all the elements that make up the whole ocean, each of us has within us that spark of divinity – God’s loving Spirit – which makes us one.

We are united in mind, united in heart, united in spirit with God and with each other. Through our Divine connection, we know that we can never be alone, that we are never without the help and support we need. directly from God

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

I pray that I become blind to separateness and differences and acutely aware of our commonality as citizens together in this spiritual world.

Today, dear God I pray everyone I meet is my brother or sister and I treat them like family.

Every appearance of disease is a challenge for us. Do you believe in the appearance as greater than God’s power over it, or do you believe in the reality and omnipresence of God? Are you grounded in the allness of God so much so that you know that there is no absence of the One Presence, life, intelligence, and power? You realize that healing can come through many channels? This comes directly, or through the physicians who have the mind of God working within their minds and hands.

Just as the sun sheds its warmth about, so we shed the healing rays of God’s life within every aspect of our life. May we live in such a true state of consciousness that sees nothing but God’s health. May we heal even as we walk.

“Do you believe?” was Jesus’ question. The same question is being asked of us today.

We have to make sure that we are filled with the Divine, the pure. We must be a connoisseur of thought and bask in the presence of God our Creator.

RIGHT NOW – You give thanks that God means for you to be strong and healthy. You welcome healing and strength into every cell of your body. You freely and fully accept health as your Divine birthright.

You give thanks that your highest good is now being revealed in your life and affairs, and you welcome it. You are heir to all good through God, your loving Creator. God has endowed you with God’s infinite health, with the infinite resources and ability to maintain that health. You open your mind and life to receive the good God means for you.

You give thanks for the spiritual qualities of love, patience, and understanding that are yours through Christ, and you welcome them. You are a connoisseur of God’s purity.

You lovingly express the Christ Spirit in all that you say, think, and do. The presence of Christ inspires and blesses your heart, mind, and soul.

You give thanks that the health, vitality and harmony of Spirit is yours. God means for you to have more health continuously, and it is coming to you now, and you welcome God’s good into your body temple.

Let us pray:

You are in this spiritual place right now, to feel the presence of God. You will find God because God has already found you. In this you will not be disappointed. God is here. May you be immersed in this awareness and to know God’s power individually inside of you.

As you come into this time of prayer and meditation, you come into a great place of spiritual comfort. Pray that God will comfort you in a profound way right now. Pray that you are eased of any human pain. Pray that you find rest. As you pause from the daily activities of life, and as you close your eyes, you enter into a special place – a place of God, a place deep within yourself, a place of power, a place of silence …

Rest in the silence of prayer …

May the light of God be inside of you. The light of God is your light, lighting your mind and lighting up your life. Pray that there is a light of illumination and enlightenment that is turned on inside of you this hour: a light that cannot ever dim or go out, a light that is so powerful in its spirituality that you are guided by it. Pray that you are able to rest upon that light and find a great peace inside of yourself.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

The light of God is alive and in you this moment. The real light of God is part of your mind. The light of God is part of your body. Every cell inside of your body has the individual light and illumination of God shining its perfection through it. You are alive because God’s light is alive inside of you.

There is a quickening of the whole Spirit of God occurring inside of you this moment. The light of God is on, and you are in this light. There is no darkness inside of you. All darkness is cast out. No darkness of the human can stand up to the light of God. The light of God is shining brightly in you, uplifting you and making you whole.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

The light of God comes through you as ideas. You receive the correct guidance and the correct ideas from Divine Mind. God’s insight has come your human mind. You do not think alone. You think with a greater power, a greater wisdom, at a greater depth and height than yourself. You think inspired by the mind of God.

Your body draws on more than its own power; it is drawing upon God’s power which is never depleted and never diminishes. You cannot be depleted of health, ideas, or energy because the boundless health, thought, energy, and vitality of God is through you.

Accept this in the silence of prayer …

The love that is within you has a greater depth than your human self. In this moment you become a channel of God’s love so you can love everyone without reservation.

Dear God, I make a wish in prayer to become more than I was yesterday, to be a brighter light for You in my studies, in my work, in the relationships in my life. I pray that I have more of all the wondrous goodness You are coming in and through me. I realize this moment that as I allow myself to surrender and accept the miracle of Your presence it is happening in and through me.

Dear God, I pray that as this prayer time closes, only the words close. I pray that the spiritual activity goes on. I pray that what was started here accelerates and expands. I pray that the wonder of God never stops.

Thank You, dear God.

If even for a moment you feel apart from God, get a piece of paper and write “God.” Then next to it write “me.” Then draw a circle around “God” and “me.” You will see how the circle of God’s love makes you one.

Jesus told you to always rely upon God.

God is your strength and loving comforter. In God you find peace of mind and understanding of your life. God is your help in every need.

God will ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

God will ask if your overtime work was for yourself or for your family.

God will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.
God won’t ask what you did to help yourself,
God will ask what you did to help others.

God will ask what you did to protect the rights of others.

God won’t ask in what neighborhood you lived,
God will ask how you treated your neighbors.

God won’t ask how many people loved you,
God will ask if you loved many people.

It is with the saddest heart that I must pass on the following news. Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, Snap-Crackle and Pop along with Captain Crunch.

The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times he was still a crusty old man and was considered a roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly dad, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, ‘Are you a cop? Yes,’ I answered and continued writing the report. ‘My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?’ ‘Yes, that’s right,’ I told her. ‘Well, then,’ she said as she extended her foot toward me, ‘would you please tie my shoe?’

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, ‘The tooth fairy will never believe this!’

THE ONE DOLLAR BILL

Take out a one-dollar bill, and look at it. The one-dollar bill you’re looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design.

This so-called paper money is, in fact, a cotton and linen blend, with minute red and blue silk fibers running through it. It is material and we have all washed it without it falling apart.

A special blend of ink is used, the contents of which we will never know. It is overprinted with symbols and then starched, to make it water resistant, and pressed to give it that nice crisp look.

If you look on the front of the bill, you will see the United States Treasury Seal.

On the top, you will see the scales for a balanced budget. In the center, you have a carpenter’s square, a tool used for an even cut. Underneath is the Key to the United States Treasury.

That’s all pretty easy to figure out, but what is on the back of that dollar bill is something we should all know.

If you turn the bill over, you will see two circles. Both circles, together, comprise the Great Seal of the United States.

The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved.

If you look at the left-hand circle, you will see a Pyramid. Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We had not begun to explore the West or decided what we could do for Western Civilization.

The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we were not even close to being finished.

Inside the capstone, you have the all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for Divinity.

It was Franklin’s belief that one human couldn’t do it alone, but a group of humans, with the help of God, could do anything.

“IN GOD WE TRUST” is on this currency. The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, “God has favored our undertaking.”

The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means, “A new order has begun.”

At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776.

If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most heroes’ monuments.

Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States, and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet, very few people know what the symbols mean.

The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons: First, he is not afraid of a storm, he is strong, and he is smart enough to soar above it.

Secondly, he wears no material crown.

We had just broken from the King of England. Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own. At the top of that shield, you have a white bar signifying Congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation. In the Eagle’s beak you will read, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” meaning, “one nation from many people.”

Above the Eagle, you have thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one.

Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.

They say that the number 13 is an unlucky number. This is almost a worldwide belief. You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But think about this for a moment: 13 original colonies, 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 stripes on our flag, 13 steps on the Pyramid, 13 letters in “Annuit Coeptis”, 13 letters in “E Pluribus Unum”, 13 stars above the Eagle, 13 bars on that shield, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows.

And, for minorities: the 13th Amendment.

Accept God’s help daily in all the little things and it will make a major difference.

A couple decades ago a presidential debate with more than 5 million people watching was held up for 27 minutes. For 27 minutes the president of the United States, and the challenger for that office, stood silent before an immense television audience.

The reason for the silence was an equipment malfunction caused by a capacitor.

The part of the equipment that failed cost only one dollar.

The space probe, Mariner 1, was bound for Venus. It headed off course and it had to be destroyed. It cost our government 19 million dollars.

The rocket had responded incorrectly because an anonymous flight computer programmer had left out a comma in the Mariners computer program.

I have often said, life is not a series of big things, but little things – that make the major difference.

In seeking happiness in your own life, you should look to the little things. It’s the little things that are cumulative and add up over a lifetime.

Are there little foxes that are gnawing at the vine of your life? The little foxes eat the vines. These vines represent those thoughts inside of you that rob you, in the minute, of your happiness.

Many people reserved God’s help for only the big crisis is of life. Accept God’s help daily in all the little things and it will make a major difference.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Today, dear God, I decree that I will let go of doubt, and let the music and message of hope and positive outlook be my keynote of this day.

Howard Hendricks tells a story of a flight from Boston to Dallas in the summer of 1987 which departed six hours late. Tired Friday-afternoon businessmen were steamed about the problem. The man across the aisle growled at the flight attendant every time she walked by. Since approaching him seemed a hopeless idea, Hendricks walked back to the galley to commend the flight attendant on self-control and the way she handled the situation. He asked her name, suggesting he wanted to write American Airlines and express appreciation. She responded, “I don’t work for American Airlines; I work for Jesus Christ.”

Will Rogers, America’s homespun philosopher, once said, “Life is 10 percent of what you make it and 90 percent how you take it.”

“Crazy” Bob Martin, was the first Southern Methodist circuit rider in Colusa County, California, he braved initial dislike and cultural distrust to share his message of Christian love with local, non-Methodist ranchers. Bob Martin would sing, pray, and shout. Hecklers ridiculed Martin’s groans of joy and his easy tears. Once, as a joke, Martin was directed into a ten foot deep channel of water instead of safely across the bridge. Dressed in black broadcloth “slick and shining,” wearing a battered stovepipe hat and mounted on a small mule, Martin stayed submerged so long he was feared dead, but he finally floated to the surface, “praising the Lord and praying for the fellow who sent him into the water.”

Pioneer H. C. Bailey wrote of the community’s exasperation with Martin’s religion but admitted that, “strange to say, the more we saw him, the better we liked him.” Before long, the community was so impressed with his zeal and harmlessness that they began to take an interest in him looking forward to his monthly rounds.

Martin took the jokes and sly fun kindly, even answering gross insults with the promise “I will pray for you; you can’t prevent that.”

Attitude can make a big difference in your day. Life is built one day at a time and good attitudes daily lead to a life full of happiness. Our perceptions of reality often affect our lives more than actual reality does. It is not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you that makes the big difference in your life.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER and Affirmation:

“I believe in God and therefore I believe in my life, unfolding in God’s orderly fashion. Following God, I maintain a great attitude!”

To pray in such a positive affirming way helps us to know that whatever challenge we are presently working through is not permanent. It will pass. Only the good that the experience contained for us will remain with us. Everyone has challenging situations to meet, but every such challenge always contains in it opportunities for good.

You do not have to know the outcome of every situation in your life. All you need to do is keep your attitude up because God is with you. Hold the thought that God is with you at work in all that concerns you, and pray to have the eyes to perceive the good that is even now unfolding.
