But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.'”
Luke 9:46-48

May we take our leadership role to a new level by seeking to build up others so they may have a better life.

True leadership puts the focus not on the leader but on the people that he or she is leading.

Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf once said, “I have seen so-called leaders who stood in front of a platoon and all they saw was a platoon. But great leaders stand in front of a platoon and see it as forty-four individuals, each of whom has aspirations, each of whom wants to live, each of whom wants to do good.”

Harry Truman was one of my favorite presidents. He once said, “How far would Moses have gone if he had taken a poll in Egypt?

“What would Jesus Christ have preached if he had taken a poll in the land of Israel? Or formed a committee to think for him?

“What would have happened to the Reformation if Martin Luther had taken a poll?

“It isn’t polls or public opinion of the moment that counts. It is right leadership that contains vision.”

A leader should light a fire under people and get them moving in positive God-directed ways. This is the way God leads. God gives you an idea and then lets you achieve it for the good of your soul growth. Leaders should lead as far as they can and then vanish. Their ashes should not choke the fire they have lit.

The disciples of Jesus Christ would have never become anything more than bumbling men had Jesus Christ not gone away. He empowered them. He told them that he would be with them always, but, from the other side of human visibility. The disciples, after witnessing the resurrection, were empowered and strengthened to go forth and change the world.

When you pray for personal success, pray also, that you may be empowered to make other people successful through your success.

It was once said, “He that thinketh he leadeth, but hath no one following, is only taking a walk.”

Realize that you are in this life to not only uplift yourself, but to uplift others. There are many people that put down others so they may feel large. These people are only living in the delusion of what they think is leadership. A true leader is God-centered. The God-centered leader loves and cares for the people that she or he is leading. A true leader enjoys the success of another, as much, or more, than their own success.

Marlene Dietrich once said of Orson Welles, “When I talk to him, I feel like a plant that’s been watered.” Do people feel watered when they are near you?

You may say, “But I am not in a leadership role.” Everyone is in a leadership role if they choose to be. Decide today to uplift at least one other person before night falls. Decide to give another person vision of their potential. Decide to listen to a person valuing them by your attention. Give the ultimate gift of yourself to another person through a kind word, a smile or compliment. Do not let this day pass without taking a leadership role in uplifting another person.

If you are in leadership presently, or management, realize that there is something more important than just looking to the bottom line of profits. It is the importance of the investment, and the return on your investment, of people working under you. You are where you are to make sure that they can become the biggest success that they choose to be.

My definition of the word “minister” is, “a professional lover of people.” Every successful minister that I have ever known loves his or her people, and empowers them through that love. Every ultra-successful business person that I have known or read about does the same. A good example was Sam Walton. He was known affectionately by his employees as “Mr. Sam.” He never referred to his employees as employees; he called them his beloved employees. He was once asked the secret of his success, and he stated simply, “Stay in touch with your people and love them.”

Too many businesspeople, and boards of directors, focus too much attention on themselves and not enough on the true strength of the team. The people working for you, or around you, can make or break you. If you use your position in a God-centered way, then you will be watering the people in your organization and you will cause tremendous growth through their health and creativity.

Dear God, I pray that I’m ordained to leadership.
I pray that my leadership is based on You leading me.
I pray that my leadership is based on You loving through me.
I pray that my leadership is based on true caring for others.
I pray that I become a model of spirituality in my work life.

A funeral service is held for a woman who just passed away. As the pallbearers carry the casket out, they accidentally bump into a wall.

They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the woman is actually alive.

She lives for 10 more years and then dies. They have another funeral for her. At the end of the service, the pallbearers carry out the casket.

As they are walking, the husband cries out, “Watch out for the wall!”

Funny observations:

♦ I read that 4,153,237 people got married last year, not to cause any trouble but shouldn’t that be an even number?

♦ I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing behind you.

♦ America is a country which produces citizens who will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but won’t cross the street to vote.

♦ You know that tingly little feeling you get when you love someone? That’s your common sense leaving your body.

♦ Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?

♦ Money talks … all mine ever says is good-bye.

♦ I’m not fat, I’m just … easier to see.

Staying Young

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, and gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. Let the tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love. Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, and hobbies, whatever, your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

11. Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘WOW! What a ride!'”

Written by a Hospice Metro Denver physician:

I just had one of the most amazing experiences of my life and wanted to share it with my family and dearest friends:

I was driving home from a meeting this evening about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Boulevard, and my car started to choke and splutter and die. I barely managed to coast, cursing, into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. My engine wouldn’t even turn over. Before I could make the call, I saw a woman walking out of the “quickie mart” building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump, so I got out to see if she was okay. When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen; she was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, and I picked it up to give it to her. It was a nickel.

At that moment, everything came into focus for me: the crying woman, the ancient Suburban crammed full of stuff with 3 kids in the back (1 in a car seat), and the gas pump reading $4.95. I asked her if she was okay and if she needed help. She just kept saying “I don’t want my kids to see me crying,” so we stood on the other side of the pump from her car. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now.

So, I asked, “And you were praying?” That made her back away from me a little but I assured her I was not a crazy person and said, “He heard you, and He sent me.”

I took out my card and swiped it through the card reader on the pump so she could fill up her car completely. While it was fueling, I walked next door to the McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gift certificates for more, and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car who attacked it like wolves, and we stood by the pump eating fries and talking a little. She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City.

Her boyfriend left 2 months ago, and she had not been able to make ends meet.

She knew she wouldn’t have money to pay rent Jan 1, and finally in desperation had finally called her parents, with whom she had not spoken in about 5 years. They lived in California and said she could come live with them and try to get on her feet there. So, she packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California, but not that they were going to live there.

I gave her my gloves, a little hug and said a quick prayer with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, “So, are you like an angel or something?” This definitely made me cry.

I said, “Sweetie, at this time angels are really busy, so sometimes God uses regular people.” It was so incredible to be a part of someone else’s miracle. And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem. I’ll put it in the shop tomorrow to check, but I suspect the mechanic won’t find anything wrong.

Sometimes the angels fly close enough to you that you can hear the flutter of their wings …

Prayer is how you open yourself to the healing power of God that is always with you. God IS willing to help you, but you must speak the word and ask for help. In prayer, you are made totally and vitally alive. You gladly and gratefully accept the privilege of communicating with God in prayer. God responds by releasing in you a miracle-working power that transforms conditions, and transforms your body into a temple of health and wholeness.

With renewed faith, you enter into a true partnership with God in bringing forth a body radiant with life, health, and vitality. And with renewed faith, you and God can move mountains of difficulties in your life. No matter what you’re facing today, God is bigger and stronger. God knows how to handle the situation and God is waiting to help you. God IS bigger than your problems.

In prayer, you see yourself as God sees you. You honor God by thinking only thoughts that out-picture pure faith and hope, pure life and health, and pure wholeness, in every part of your thinking and your feeling. You build a new state of consciousness in prayer that calls forth the image and likeness of perfection in which you were created.

Have you ever noticed how most people complain their way through life? Most people talk about what is wrong instead of what is right.

Decide now, to begin a flow of ceaseless praise.

Praise is an attitude of mind that takes you into a stream of living where results and changes in your life, and the circumstances of your life, are often astounding.

Praise is the open door through which you walk into a new freedom, where joyous, constructive, happy experiences are inevitable.

You praise God who has implanted in you the capacity to praise. The followers of God are not complainers. Praising, you feel deep in your heart the joy of a praised-filled life. You praise God who gives you love, light, life, and wisdom.

You praise all those with whom you share your life, all those who offer fellowship and companionship along the way. You praise the love that binds all humankind together.

You decide to praise everything this week. You fill your moments and your days with the flow of ceaseless praise. You are blessed in thought, feeling, word, and deed.

Praise makes your weekly path a way of shining brightness.

This week, you praise your health. You know that the best way to retain, strengthen, or regain your health is to praise the health you have.

This week, you praise your career. You know that to live joyfully and happily, to believe in the loving goodness of God, is the foundation of the successful life.

This week, you praise your relationships and you see them blooming in front of your eyes.

This week, you praise yourself, instead of cutting yourself down, and you see your soul positively respond.

This week, you praise your abilities knowing that what you praise increases.

As you praise, you stand sure of the fullness of life in God. There is so much to praise, and as you begin to look for the things to praise, more will be revealed to you.

So, this week, walk the spiritual path, agree to cease all complaining, and criticism, and praise constantly. Those that will do this see their life transformed. A life is only as good as what we focus upon. This week, you focus on the good and PRAISE IT.

“Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.”
Romans 13:10

Today’s date has double meaning. It is Valentine’s Day celebrating love, and it is also Ash Wednesday. For Ash Wednesday we encourage you to follow God by giving up unloving thoughts for the 40 days of Lent.

Life can be an exciting journey and it is love that makes that journey worthwhile. Life is Love. Love is Life. Who would live and not love? Living and not loving is taking the heaven out of life and replacing it with a hellish empty environment.

In Luke 6:31 Jesus teaches the Golden rule: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

The Golden rule is love made manifest. We all want to be treated in loving ways, in order to receive love we must give it first.

Evan H. Hopkins said, “While it is faith that makes all things possible, it is love that makes all things easy.” The great Martin Luther King Jr. stated correctly, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”

In the end, in every area of life, you are judged by how loving you were. Time that is not spent loving is wasted.

A theologian once stated, no matter what the question, love is the answer. Love is the oil that takes the friction out of life. Neale Donald Walsch stated correctly, “At the critical juncture in all human relationships, there is only one question: What would love do now?

Love does not boast. It is not the ego proclaiming how good it is by being loving. It is the humble person that simply gives.

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2

We must love each other and love life itself. Try to actively love your life and it will love you right back. Love is appreciating to such a degree that you feel overwhelmed with joy.

If you love someone, let them know it. Never miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7

Because God is love, unless we love, we do not follow God. This is true every day of the week but perhaps, even more important on Sunday when we are in our house of worship.

1 John 4:8 “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Spiritually, love is not about getting, but giving.

Make it a rule and keep it every day … Never, if possible, go to bed at night without being able to say, “I have made one human being at least a little wiser, a little happier, a little better, because I was loving this day.”

Many ask what their purpose is. Many ask how they can follow God more. The answers are contained within this Positive Daily Inspiration.

You do this above all. 1 Peter 4:8, “ABOVE ALL, love each other deeply.” Colossians 3:14, “And OVER ALL THESE virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Valentine’s Prayer and Meditation for Love

Let us pray.

God, today, this moment, I agree to let my light shine, my love shine, and to become love. Thank You, God.

God and I are One. This is a truth for you. Looking at others in your life, you sense certain qualities you admire much. Where there has been a sense of being deprived and having unmet needs, there is a potential from God to experience the fullness of being wonderfully human.

Do you know that you live in the midst of God’s infinite love? It is not possible for you to stray outside the boundaries of love – for God’s love is boundless.

You surrender your heart to infinite love so the love of God may be complete in you. God is the love that you feel now.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

You let go of fear and confusion. They are illusions and hinder love. Faith and knowledge are supported by God’s infinite love.

You do not allow the pain of the past to mar the beauty in the present. You do not isolate yourself from the joy of living this day in total love.

All creation is an expression of love. You now let love motivate you to create and express love intentionally with words and actions.

Love is a dream when it is a feeling, but love is real when it is lived. You give life this day to the dream of love. You express God’s love now.

It was sixty years ago, on a hot summer day, in the deep south.

We lived on a dirt road, on a sand lot. We were what was known as “dirt poor”.

I had been playing outside all morning in the sand. Suddenly, I heard a sharp clanking sound behind me and looking over my shoulder, my eyes were drawn to a strange sight!

Across the dirt road were two rows of men, dressed in black and white, striped, baggy uniforms. Their faces were covered with dust and sweat. They looked so weary, and they were chained together with huge, black, iron chains. Hanging from the end of each chained row was a big, black, iron ball. They were, as polite people said in those days, a “Chain Gang,” guarded by two, heavily armed guards.

I stared at the prisoners as they settled uncomfortably down in the dirt, under the shade of some straggly trees.

One of the guards walked towards me.

Nodding as he passed, he went up to our front door and knocked. My mother appeared at the door, and I heard the guard ask if he could have permission to get water from the pump, in the backyard, so that “his men” could “have a drink”. My mother agreed, but I saw a look of concern on her face, as she called me inside.

I stared through the window as each prisoner was unchained from the line, to hobble over to the pump and drink his fill from a small tin cup, while a guard watched vigilantly. It wasn’t long before they were all chained back up again, with prisoners and guards retreating into the shade, away from an unrelenting sun.

I heard my mother call me into the kitchen, and I entered, to see her bustling around with tins of tuna fish, mayonnaise, our last loaf of bread, and two, big, pitchers of lemonade. In what seemed “a blink of an eye”, she had made a tray of sandwiches using all the tuna we were to have had for that night’s supper.

My mother was smiling as she handed me one of the pitchers of lemonade, cautioning me to carry it “carefully” and to “not spill a drop.” Then, lifting the tray in one hand and holding a pitcher in her other hand, she marched me to the door, deftly opening it with her foot, and trotted me across the street.

She approached the guards, flashing them with a brilliant smile.

“We had some leftovers from lunch,” she said, “and I was wondering if we could share with you and your men.” She smiled at each of the men, searching their dark eyes with her own eyes of “robin’s egg blue.” Everyone started to their feet. “Oh no!” she said. “Stay where you are! I’ll just serve you!”

Calling me to her side, she went from guard to guard, then from prisoner to prisoner — filling each tin cup with lemonade, and giving each man a sandwich. It was very quiet, except for a “thank you, ma’am,” and the clanking of the chains. Very soon we were at the end of the line, my mother’s eyes softly scanning each face.

The last prisoner was a big man, his dark skin pouring with sweat, and streaked with dust. Suddenly, his face broke into a wonderful smile, as he looked up into my mother’s eyes, and he said,

“Ma’am, I’ve wondered all my life if I’d ever see an angel, and now I have! Thank you!”

Again, my mother’s smile took in the whole group. “You’re all welcome!” she said. “God bless you.” Then we walked across to the house, with empty tray and pitchers, and back inside. Soon, the men moved on, and I never saw them again.

The only explanation my mother ever gave me, for that strange and wonderful day, was that I “remember, always, to entertain strangers, for by doing so, you may entertain angels, without knowing.” Then, with a mysterious smile, she went about the rest of the day.

I don’t remember what we ate for supper, that night. I just know it was served by an angel. (Jaye Lewis)
