QUESTION: What is Advent?

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” Traditionally, it is a four-week period of reflection in preparation for Christmas. The tradition of Advent wreaths evolved out of a much older one celebrated by people whose lives were ordered by the seasons. In winter, wagon wheels were brought into the houses as the days grew shorter and colder. They were adorned with evergreen branches and candles as a reminder that the cycle of life continued, and that light would return with the spring.

This year, Advent begins on Sunday, December 3rd. Each week, we invite you and your family to join us at home as we will light a candle each week that represents one of four important themes: Hope/Faith, Peace, Love, and Joy. We will light each of the four candles from the Christ candle, which represents Jesus’ divine nature (and ours, too).

Instructions:

If you want to join us, gather 5 candles – one for each of the four Advent Sundays, and one to represent the Christ. Traditionally, you would use 3 purple candles and 1 pink candle, and 1 white candle; however, the candle colors don’t matter. Use what you have on hand. Additionally, use battery operated candles if you are concerned about safety.

Having a Advent Wreath is optional. If you choose to have a wreath, you can make a wreath out of evergreen branches or with Christmas garland. Be creative! The possibilities are many and we hope this is a fun activity for your family. While we hope you will light your candles along with us each Sunday during Advent, you might prefer to light them as a family at another time.

On Christmas Eve, all the candles are lit.

Please note: The white candle is the Christ candle. (This candle will be lit each week and used to light the other candles each week.} The pink/rose candle is called the “Gaudete.” This is a Latin word that means “rejoice.” It is the first word of an ancient hymn based on Philippians 4: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.”

Through God, your dreams CAN come true!

Let us pray: (Say this aloud in prayer)

In Jesus Christ’s name, I declare with my total being that I trust in You, God. I trust You to take care of me. I trust You, dear God, to take from my life what is harming me and keeping me from fully realizing my dreams. I trust You to take from my life that which does not belong, and to bring to me that which belongs in my life today, so that I can build my future upon Your success.

“I must dream of the things I am seeking.” – The Sound of Music

I am dignified, sophisticated, and poised, because I am spiritually relaxed. I am not hyper, tense, or frantic. I am an elegant, serene person. I am capable.

I have dreams and I ask You, dear God, to empower in me the power of seeing those dreams through.

I do not join another’s dream unless guided by You — I keep my own. I am a leader because I am God empowered. Others may join me, or not, but I do not lose my vision of the dream. I am as I am. There is a sameness about me, a core that never changes — a beautiful disposition, happy, loving, and awake. Everyone loves to be with me because I radiate God’s goodness of hopeful optimism. Giving and receiving are two sides of the Divine law of circulation. With joy and enthusiasm, you give of yourself to the furtherance of God’s good ideas. You share God’s love and God’s goodness with all whom you meet. As you share, you find that you receive even greater returns of joy, satisfaction, love, and harmony.

You give of your love to all humankind. You enter into a larger dimension of living as you have a feeling of goodwill for all God’s children.

With joy and enthusiasm, you give the gift of your encouragement to others. You encourage others in their dreams and their desire for a better life. You encourage each one to become something greater than they have been before. As you give the gift of encouragement to others, you receive in return more joy and enthusiasm with which to work toward the fulfillment of your dreams and desires.

This day you activate the Divine law of circulation. You give, generously and you receive, thankfully.

You know that you are heir to God’s good. You realize that prosperity is your birthright. You believe that there is only one presence and power of life, in all its beauty of cornucopia, manifesting itself in and through your life.

You are free from the belief that lack, and limitation have any power over you. You give power to the only presence there is, the power of God, mighty in the midst of you. You give thanks because no weakness has any power over you.

As it says in Ephesians 6:10, “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of God’s might.”

God created you and has placed within you the power to bring forth perfect life, comfort, and strength. You activate this power through the Divine law of circulation. Your faith will build as you began giving.

Tagore, the well-known Indian poet, gives us one of the most beautiful definitions of faith ever put into words.

He writes:

“Faith is the bird that feels the light, and sings when the dawn is still dark.”

Although everything around you may still be dark, intuitively, you can sense a great reservoir of spiritual light in the deeper recesses of your faith. You move this out into conscious awareness. It is then revealed that no amount of darkness can ever oppose this rising sun of faith. The faith penetrates all realms of thought and makes you know that all things are possible with God. Out of this state of awareness, all doubts, and fears disappear as vapor before the sun.

The greatest discovery you can ever make is that you have God with you every moment of every day, and in this discovery, you find that you do have tremendous faith.

It has been said that God helps those that help themselves. You have free will to stay the same, or to begin to activate your real spiritual power. You churn this power into action through your free will giving. The intense light of faith is within you, this day, and you can easily surmount all obstacles that would otherwise obstruct your path.

Peace be still.

Peace be still.

Allow your body to quiet and your mind to quiet.

Rest in prayer.

As you begin the stilling process, allow me to share a piece of poetry with you.

Be still.

The wind must die, the storm will cease:
God rules and there is peace.
Be still and let God’s calm,
sweet knowing fill your breast:
There is none else but God:
Rest.

There is a state of mind that is sure to help you become receptive to the answers to your prayers. No matter what your problem, no matter how great the need, no matter how urgent or pressing or desperate the situation may appear, this state of mind will immediately help you.

This state of mind is serenity; serenity that is a listening, quiet, open-mindedness to God’s voice and to God’s alone. Serenity is not a static or inactive state of mind; rather it is a peaceful state of mind based in complete faith in God.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

From this serenity of mind, right action emerges, for serenity lifts you above fear, uncertainty, personal limitation or tenseness. Serenity is a state of mind in which you can hear the still, small voice, where unshakable faith lays hold of God’s good and brings it forth into manifestation.

Right now,

You are calm.

You are serene.

You are relaxed as you let God work in and through you.

You begin to affirm this quietly in your mind.
I AM CALM.
I AM SERENE.
I AM RELAXED.
GOD IS WORKING IN AND THROUGH ME.

A great serenity of stillness and rest happens inside of you.

Allow this to happen right now in this holy moment of the silence …

The Christ rises up, and the human is cast aside for a moment. All tense, worried, anxious thoughts are cast aside for the moment.

You feel the serenity of God.

God’s serenity is infilling you this moment; the peace is calming the storm inside of you; the peace is calming the wind inside of you. God’s calm, sweet knowing fill your heart.

God is a real God. God is right where you sit. God is with you now. God is a calm God, a peaceful God, a still God. You turn toward this calming, peaceful Presence and God infills you.

You are a direct focal point of expression for God; the radiating center through which God’s light shines.

You feel God’s peace in the silence of prayer …

In this moment of quiet, God is giving you health, happiness, prosperity, harmony, love, wisdom and success. You are serene, and you have faith that this is so. God is answering your need in just the right way.

You are completely receptive to God’s action through you. You are serene with a calm, trusting state of mind. You let go and you let God. Instead of thinking tense, worried, anxious thoughts, you quietly affirm:
I AM CALM.
I AM SERENE.
I AM RELAXED AS I LET GOD WORK THROUGH ME.

Quickly you see that you have stopped straining towards the answer to your problem.

The answers that you need flow unobstructed into your mind.

A serene mind is a mind filled with power. Right now, your mind is a mind that is filled with power.

You are poised. You are filled with God’s Spirit of love which attracts happiness to you. God is working in your life. Answers to prayer are coming. You are simply receptive with an open mind.

Serenity is happening in you; a quiet, clear-minded listening to God’s voice. This day a way is opened for you. This day you receive help that you need from this quiet inner voice to go forward. This day you are strong in your faith. This day you are poised for right action.

This day you are joyous in celebration of expectancy.

With a calm serenity in our minds, we have joined together in prayer, and we feel God’s peace. This is a peace that passes all understanding, a peace that will not leave us this day:

“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure – pressed down, shaken together and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
Luke 6:38

It is impossible to out give God. The horn of the infinite plenty shall be opened and pour you out such an overflowing abundance of good that you shall not have room enough to consume it.

A tithe means a 10th given freely and joyously back to God’s work where you receive your spiritual food.

Today’s Message: What You Give Comes Back to You

You cannot out-give God, give, and it comes back multiplied from God, and from fellow humans.

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and humans were strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many years later that same young woman became critically ill. The doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, and then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.

Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words …

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.”

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands.”

There’s a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place – And, after all, isn’t that what life is all about?

When the gambler wakes up from dreaming about a huge glowing number 5 made out of gold and diamonds, he knows it’s an omen. So, he grabs a racing form and looks up that day’s fifth race. Sure enough, the number five horse in the fifth race is Fifth Element. So, for the rest of the day, he does everything in fives:

He eats five bowls of cereal for breakfast,
goes for a five-mile run,
takes a five-minute shower,
and wears the fifth jacket he finds in his closet.
At the racetrack, he buys five programs,
bets $555 on the fifth horse in the fifth race,
and sits in the fifth row of the bleachers.

And then the gun goes off, he settles in and watches his horse come in fifth.

Bubba applied for an engineering position.

Jim applied for the same job. Both applicants, having the same qualifications were asked to take a test by the manager. Upon completion of the test, both men only missed one of the questions.

Bubba asked: “And why are you giving him the job? We both got nine questions correct!”

The manager said: “We have made our decision not on the correct answers, but, rather, on the one question that you both missed.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice.
On one woman’s tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph:
“Tried everything twice. Loved it both times!”

2. Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
(Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)

3. Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
Never let the brain get idle.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath.
And if you have a friend who makes you laugh,
spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6. The tears happen:
Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.
LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love:
Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health:
If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county,
to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second chance.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

The more loving, tolerant, and accepting of others you have become, the more spiritual you are.

It has been said, when we put down other people, the unconscious cannot distinguish between the subject and object. When we criticize another, that judgment does not just come home to roost – it never leaves the roost but operates on us instantly. Our judgmental thoughts and words evoke inner emotions, and most of the time, they trigger less than healthy body chemistry in addition to the negative emotional states they create.

They are all put in permanent storage INSIDE US!

If we make being critical and judgmental of others a habit, over time, we dull our senses and are oblivious to the negative feelings generated in our bodies. It takes effort to regain that awareness and it requires a lot of “Inner Housekeeping.”

Anatole France once said, “You must be dead in the one life, to enter the next.” He was not speaking of death in the physical body but instead a complete death to opinions, false beliefs, and habits – so one can move on to live in a higher way.

This is the final test of a human: their respect for those who can be of no possible service to them. The spiritual person gives first in attitude, and in thoughts held in mind concerning others. This spiritual person doesn’t care about getting something back from the person given to, they only seek to give.

Intolerance, it is well known, is most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by the higher education of common association; they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.

The Dalai Lama said, “This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher. We can never obtain peace in the outer world, until we make peace with ourselves.”

1 Peter 3:8-11 states, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.”

In Ephesians 4:2, our Bible states, “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.”

The Divine Prescription: The activity of God is the only power at work in my mind, heart, and life. All false beliefs, all negative appearances are dissolved now by the loving, freeing, forgiving action of God. I am whole, strong, and free as God created me to be.

If you had read the front-page story of the San Francisco Chronicle many years ago, you would have read about a female Humpback Whale which had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighed down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environment group for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

She then came back to each diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around … she was thanking them. Some said that it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The person who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

This is our wish for you this Thanksgiving.

In England, an ordinary person is called the commoner. There are billions of commoners the world over.

Let me introduce you to a commoner in our society. Her mythical name is “Molly SeeNoGood.”

She wakes up tired every day; life is taking its toll. She is critical of everything. Most of her communications with others has sunk to the depths of negativity. Criticizing has become a way of life for Ms. SeeNoGood. She could not perceive good if it stared her directly in the face, because she wears bitter sunglasses that color everything in the dark shades of the hellish life she has created for herself. She blames everyone and everything outside of herself for her bad life; but what happens to her has very little to do with events. Molly has not said “thank you” in years, and Molly is drowning in her self-created darkness. Molly does not live life; she simply exists in a day-to-day existence, marking time by the events of crises.

Everyone knows someone like Molly who is living a common life. It was sad in Jesus’ day, and it is equally sad today.

Let’s visit next with an un-commoner: a person who rises above mediocrity to a new level of living. His name is “Seymour Good.”

He no longer allows outer events to rob him of his daily life, and he has a giving, thankful attitude. He is an adventurer who goes into each day with an expectation of good. He always wears the garment of a smile. It is the main staple of his wardrobe, and he gives it fully to any, and all. His smile is just an outer expression of his inner-perception of life; he sees good everywhere, in everyone, and in everything. He gives thanks to God, constantly.

I urge you to spend the entire Thanksgiving holiday being a Seymour Good.

Each soul must learn to live life because we are not born with instructions. The greatest discovery is that each person can rise above a common life. We all strive for outer success, but the real success is found within, in the realm of perceptions. Life is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of positive possibility. The more you give thanks for these possibilities, the more you will have things to give thanks for.

Deuteronomy 8:10 – “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land God has given you.”

You have heard the saying “Life is for the living;” but life is just as much for those who can perceive it – life is for the perceptive. Your perception of life determines what your life will be.

When you give thanks, you are living from the altitude of the highest perception of life.

Thanksgiving is a powerful, spiritual exercise that can turn your life around. “Thank You God,” is the ultimate prayer.

Prayer is not just in asking, in its truest sense; it is acknowledging God’s actions. Prayer does not change God; God is all-good and all-giving. Prayer changes us and makes us more perceptive of God’s good that is available, right now, in our lives – if we can accept it. True prayer is acceptance of the Divine good and acknowledging it. After receiving such a gift, all the cells of your body have the urge to cry out – “Thank You God!”

Every day, you can say thank you to all that is around you and within you. You can perceive the good and appreciate it. You can agree to stop taking life for granted, wake up to your good, and realize the source of that good – God.

I like to end every day by giving thanks for the good I have received that day. I like to begin every day by giving thanks, in advance, for the good that is going to come into my life that day, the wonderful people I will meet, and the incredible blessings that day will hold for me.

Every day, you have a choice to live life as a commoner or to rise and become uncommon.

Every day, the decision must be made anew.

Thanksgiving is a spiritual exercise of review. By studying the past and being thankful for it, we lay the foundation for our increasing ability to be thankful for today.

Thanksgiving becomes a way of life rather than just a once-a-year holiday. It is a focus, a reward; it is true love in expression to God. To say thank you and mean it from the depths of your soul is one of the greatest experiences of this life. Whether you say thank you to God, or to another person, in its truest sense, is the finest gift you can give. Never miss the opportunity to say thank you. You will discover – as Seymour Good discovered – that the perception of living within you, of giving thanks for everything, is the gateway to heaven.

Being thankful can change your perception, your life, and your level of happiness.

I have a smile on my face because I am thinking about you reading this. I thank you for being a part of my wonderful life, and a part of the miracle of this ministry.

Max Lucado has written about an old man walking down a Florida beach. The sun sets like an orange ball on the horizon. The waves slap the sand. The smell of saltwater stings the air. The beach is vacant. No sun to entice the sunbathers. Not enough light for the fishermen. So, aside from a few joggers and strollers, the gentleman is alone.

He carries a bucket in his bony hand – a bucket of shrimp. It’s not for him. It’s not for the fish. It’s for the sea gulls.

He walks to an isolated pier cast in gold by the setting sun. He steps out to the end of the pier. The time has come for the weekly ritual.

He stands and waits.

Soon the sky becomes a mass of dancing dots. The evening silence gives way to the screeching of birds. They fill the sky and then cover the moorings. They are on a pilgrimage to meet the old man.

For a half hour or so, the bushy-browed, shoulder-bent gentleman will stand on the pier, surrounded by the birds of the sea, until his bucket is empty.

But even after the food is gone, his feathered friends still linger. They linger as if they’re attracted to more than just food. They perch on his hat. They walk on the pier. And they all share a moment together.

The old man on the pier couldn’t go a week without saying “thank you.”

His name was Eddie Rickenbacker. If you were alive in October 1942, you probably remember the day that he was reported missing at sea.

He had been sent on a mission to deliver a message to Gen. Douglas MacArthur. With a hand-picked crew in a B-17 known as the “Flying Fortress,” he set off across the South Pacific. Somewhere the crew became lost, the fuel ran out, and the plane went down.

All eight crew members escaped into the life rafts. They battled the weather, the water, the sharks, and the sun. But most of all, they battled the hunger. After eight days, their rations were gone. They ran out of options. It would take a miracle for them to survive.

And a miracle occurred.

After an afternoon devotional service, the men said a prayer and tried to rest. As Rickenbacker was dozing with his hat over his eyes, something landed on his head. He would later say that he knew it was a sea gull. He didn’t know how he knew; he just knew. That gull meant food … if he could catch it. And he did.

The flesh was eaten. The intestines were used as fish bait. And the crew survived.

What was a sea gull doing hundreds of miles away from land?

Only God knows.

But whatever the reason, Rickenbacker was thankful. As a result, every Friday evening, this old captain walked to the pier, his bucket full of shrimp and his heart full of thanks.
