Saturday Inspirations

(Submitted with our great thanks)

A beautiful story!

“Watch out! You nearly broad sided that car!” My father yelled at me. “Can’t you do anything right?”

Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man, in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn’t prepared for another battle.

“I saw the car, Dad. Please don’t yell at me when I’m driving.”

My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.

Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts … dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil. What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack in Washington and Oregon. He had enjoyed being outdoors and had reveled in pitting his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered grueling lumberjack competitions, and had placed often.

The shelves in his house were filled with trophies that attested to his prowess.

The years marched on relentlessly. The first time he couldn’t lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, straining to lift it. He became irritable whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn’t do something he had done as a younger man. Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital while a paramedic administered CPR to keep blood and oxygen flowing.

At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky … he survived. But something inside Dad died. His zest for life was gone. He obstinately refused to follow doctor’s orders.

Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside with sarcasm and insults.

The number of visitors thinned, then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust.

Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated and moody. Soon I was taking my pent-up anger out on Dick. We began to bicker and argue.

Alarmed, Dick sought out our pastor and explained the situation. The clergyman set up weekly counseling appointments for us. At the close of each session he prayed, asking God to soothe Dad’s troubled mind.

But the months wore on and God was silent. Something had to be done and it was up to me to do it.

The next day I sat down with the phone book and methodically called each of the mental health clinics listed in the Yellow Pages. I explained my problem to each of the sympathetic voices that answered in vain.

Just when I was giving up hope, one of the voices suddenly exclaimed, “I just read something that might help you! Let me go get the article.”

I listened as she read. The article described a remarkable study done at a nursing home. All the patients were under treatment for chronic depression. Yet their attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given responsibility for a dog.

I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. After I filled out a questionnaire, a uniformed officer led me to the kennels. The odor of disinfectant stung my nostrils as I moved down the row of pens. Each contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs, spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after the other for various reasons too big, too small, too much hair.

As I neared the last pen a dog in the shadows of the far corner struggled to his feet, walked to the front of the run and sat down. It was a pointer, one of the dog world’s aristocrats. But this was a caricature of the breed.

Years had etched his face and muzzle with shades of gray. His hip bones jutted out in lopsided triangles. But it was his eyes that caught and held my attention. Calm and clear, they beheld me unwaveringly.

I pointed to the dog. “Can you tell me about him?”

The officer looked, then shook his head in puzzlement. “He’s a funny one.

“Appeared out of nowhere and sat in front of the gate. We brought him in, figuring someone would be right down to claim him. That was two weeks ago, and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.”

He gestured helplessly.

As the words sank in I turned to the man in horror. “You mean you’re going to kill him?”

“Ma’am,” he said gently, “that’s our policy. We don’t have room for every unclaimed dog.”

I looked at the pointer again. The calm brown eyes awaited my decision.

“I’ll take him,” I said.

I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. When I reached the house I honked the horn twice. I was helping my prize out of the car when Dad shuffled onto the front porch … “Ta-da! Look what I got for you, Dad!” I said excitedly.

Dad looked, then wrinkled his face in disgust. “If I had wanted a dog I would have gotten one. And I would have picked out a better specimen than that bag of bones. Keep it! I don’t want it.” Dad waved his arm scornfully and turned back toward the house.

Anger rose inside me. It squeezed together my throat muscles and pounded into my temples. “You’d better get used to him, Dad. He’s staying!”

Dad ignored me. “Did you hear me, Dad?” I screamed.

At those words Dad whirled angrily, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes narrowed and blazing with hate. We stood glaring at each other like duelists, when suddenly the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He wobbled toward my dad and sat down in front of him. Then slowly, carefully, he raised his paw.

Dad’s lower jaw trembled as he stared at the uplifted paw. Confusion replaced the anger in his eyes. The pointer waited patiently. Then Dad was on his knees hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm and intimate friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne.

Together he and Cheyenne explored the community. They spent long hours walking down dusty lanes. They spent reflective moments on the banks of streams, angling for tasty trout. They even started to attend Sunday services together, Dad sitting in a pew and Cheyenne lying quietly at his feet.

Dad and Cheyenne were inseparable throughout the next three years. Dad’s bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne made many friends. Then late one night I was startled to feel Cheyenne’s cold nose burrowing through our bed covers. He had never before come into our bedroom at night.

I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father’s room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night.

Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad’s peace of mind.

The morning of Dad’s funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life.

And then the pastor turned to Hebrews 13:2. “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

“I’ve often thanked God for sending that angel,” he said.

For me, the past dropped into place, completing a puzzle that I had not seen before: the sympathetic voice that had just read the right article … Cheyenne’s unexpected appearance at the animal shelter … his calm acceptance and complete devotion to my father … and the proximity of their deaths. And suddenly I understood. I knew that God had answered my prayers after all.

Life is too short for drama or petty things, so laugh hard, love truly and forgive quickly.

“Behold, the former things have come to pass, and the new things I now declare.”
Isaiah 42:9

Even when circumstances seem to have forced a person to let go of some dream, or to change the direction of his or her life, they need not feel that all is lost, or that they should give up. It is never too late to begin life again, to grasp new opportunities, to turn to new endeavors, and to seek new and greater accomplishments than ever before.

Instead of thinking of what might have been, you can release thoughts of yesterday and begin again, today, right where you are.

God has placed Divine help within your grasp. God is with you, and within you. Listen and you will be inspired again.

How do you know when it is God’s voice speaking to you? The still, small voice says things about you that are so good, so loving, and so great that you, as a human being, may have a hard time comprehending.

If it is your voice coming from your own mind, it may be what the Chinese call “the chattering monkeys.” This is the voice that always tells you the worst, instead of the best.

Listen, in prayer, and you will hear God’s voice showing you the way to victorious life. This voice is rarely audible; this is why it is called the still, small voice. It often comes as an impression, or an idea.

As you approach life with an unwavering faith in God’s power with you, you find new doors being revealed to you and new paths shown to your awareness. You will be strengthened in mind, body, and soul. You will be inspired to enter into new life with vitality and joy instead of fear.

If you tend to resist change, you can re-educate your thinking so that you view change as necessary and good for your growth and unfoldment. Growth is part of life, and you cooperate with life when you bless changing conditions and circumstances.

Do not constantly look to the past, but instead use the fuel of the good in the past to move you on your path to the future. Walk towards tomorrow with a feeling of pleasant anticipation.

When you open a letter, or answer the telephone or doorbell, do so with a feeling of pleasant anticipation.

Say, “I go to meet my God good!”

You can extend this same attitude to larger matters also.

You do not allow yourself to become fearful or resistant when confronted with changes, large or small. As you welcome new beginnings, you regard it as an adventure leading to a fuller, more useful, and happier life. You keep an open mind to change; therefore, you are receptive to new experiences.

You go forward with the assurance that tomorrow, and every tomorrow, hold good in store for you because God is already there, preparing the way.

You live, today, filled with faith in God, and the goodness of God.

“Be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead!”
1 Peter 1:6

An elderly woman and her little grandson, whose face was sprinkled with bright freckles, spent the day at the zoo.

Lots of children were waiting in line to get their cheeks painted by a local artist who was decorating them with tiger paws.

“You’ve got so many freckles, there’s no place to paint!” a girl in the line said to the little fellow.

Embarrassed, the little boy dropped his head. His grandmother knelt down next to him.

“I love your freckles. When I was a little girl I always wanted freckles,” she said, while tracing her finger across the child’s cheek.

“Freckles are beautiful.”

The boy looked up, “Really?”

“Of course,” said the grandmother. “Why just name me one thing that’s prettier than freckles.”

The little boy thought for a moment, peered intensely into his grandma’s face and softly whispered …

“Wrinkles.”

Some people can’t enjoy life, for they live behind the barrier of self-complaint.

Life is a journey. Many people are waiting so much for the imagined destination they forget to enjoy the miles they are traveling.

I remember counseling a woman years ago, that told me she would not give herself permission to be happy, until she lost 20 pounds. What a waste.

Some people complain their way through the day, criticizing and not liking their present situation. Some look in the mirror and find their number one excuse to not be happy. They always find something wrong, and do not believe they are worthy of acceptance until they make some change.

Change can be as minor as a hairdo, weight loss, or as major as plastic surgery before they will like what they have.

I have also known many, of what you would call, “the beautiful people.” I have rarely known one that liked what they presently had, for they would always find something wrong.

Many people do not come up to the standard of self-love, truthfully, they do not even have self like.

We must view ourselves, and our life, as God views us. God loves us and God loves life – God is the Creator of life.

Admittedly, we might not be to that level, but on our journey we must walk in that direction by at least liking what we have and being thankful for it.

Name: hb -Date: 03/13/2024 08:40:28

Prayer Request: I need some powerful healing right now for my partner. Positive thoughts, prayers, and intentions are needed. My partner of the last seven years who was diagnosed with bipolar a decade ago has been in a psychotic mania for the last few months. After several police calls, trips to the hospitals, burning property, and him even attacking my father physically, he is finally in a mental health facility for treatment.

Currently, I have an order of protection, due to his recent toxic behavior, which states he cannot return to the home and he cannot contact me unless it is regarding his medical care. In the state of IL, a patient is able to leave a mental health facility against dr’s wishes and five days (they started the count on Monday) and he is planning on leaving on Friday although his dr told me in his medical opinion he needs to be hospitalized and medicated for at least another week before he will stable enough to leave. I have agreed that I will consider letting him return to the home if he is stable. However, in his current state, he is choosing homelessness rather than staying in the facility until the dr says he is clear to leave. He needs to accept that the treatment is best for him.

He is reluctant to admit that there is a problem with his behavior at all. In fact, he believes he is fine and that his doctors think he is fine. However, I know that is untrue as I spoke with his psychiatrist and social worker at the mental facility as well as his nurse at delnor and all agree that he is in a psychotic maniac as part of bipolar 1. The psychiatrist recommended medication which he was reluctant to take at first. He has been there since Friday evening but finally took his first dose today. However, he is still insisting on leaving early against medical advice. Please hold space that he will realize that he needs treatment and agree to stay in the program as long as the dr recommends and will recognize the hurt that he has caused.

Thank you all!

LIFE-GIVING HEALING

“Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, fear not!”
Isaiah 35:4

Every day, Positive Christianity prays with people. The majority of our prayer requests are for personal healing, or for the healing of a family member, or friend.

When you are in the hospital, or are visiting the hospital room of someone you care about deeply, this can be a time that is charged with emotion. Many times, we face these difficulties with great fear.

With God’s help, we can be strong and not have any fear for ourselves or for others.

When you have a health challenge, you become still, in prayer, and attune yourself to the Divine healing power of God with you and within you. God is your Creator that gave you life, and this same Creator can give you new life. This renewing, revitalizing power is continuously at work, in and through you, strengthening and perfecting every cell. You center your faith in this life-giving power and let go anxious, fearful thoughts. There is no condition more powerful than God’s healing activity.

If there are loved ones or friends who have a need for health and wholeness, you pray for them, knowing that with them and within them is the life-giving power of God. Whatever the condition, whatever the appearance, you have faith to know that they are one with God, one with God’s life-giving power and strength, that the healing activity of God is doing a perfect work in them.

You pray for yourself and others. You are blessed with wholeness; and you are a blessing to those that you are praying for today.

In the absence of fear you have new and profound strength, directly from God. In Philippians 4:13, our Bible states, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me!” “All things” include profound healing.

A definition of the word strength is “an inherent asset.” The fearless Christ Spirit with us is an inherent asset. Let us realize what a mighty resource we have for healing in Christ.

Christ is our inner reservoir of strength and power, ever-present and ever-available.

We can also receive a Divine healing of our minds – accepting a renewal of our minds, having this same mind that was in Christ Jesus, illuminating our human mind, increasing our ability to learn, to remember, and to understand.

The Christ Spirit undergirds our fine doctors, nurses, and medicines, providing a strong, stable, and lasting support.

Through prayer, you draw upon your inherent asset; strength and power, sufficient for every healing, are released in and through you and in and through those for whom you pray.

Today, you give thanks for God’s life-giving healing and the increase of the inherent strength through which you and those that you pray for can do all things.

“Hence we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper.'”
Hebrews 13:6

Let us pray,

Dear God, give me the spiritual perception to see things from a higher vantage point. I pray dear God that I have the spiritual insight to stop complaining my way through life. Help me to enjoy every moment and see the good. I pray that I form a new spiritual habit of looking for and finding the God-given good in everything. I pray that I remember to give thanks continuously on the good days, and the seemingly bad. Help me discover the silver lining in every cloud.

Let us take a journey to God in the silence of prayer. God is here; love is here; peace is here.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

In your mind’s eye, I ask you to create a scene high on a mountain, overlooking a valley. There may be some other peaks behind. See a scene of great beauty, a restful, serene scene.

Sit yourself down safely amongst the flowers, the grass, the sweet-smelling herbs, and the trees, and look out at this natural vista. Look out high above the world. Look out and contemplate what is going on down there; down in the valley, down in the towns and villages, down in the cities, factories, schools, churches, and homes.

What is going on down there?

Contemplate this in the silence of prayer …

From up here, it is lovely and good, and there is great peace. Could it be that, truly, it is also the same down there as well?

Let us contemplate our lives. Could it be that this great peace, up here, is also true, right where we live?

Let us take this vision of God-given good and carried this deeply inside ourselves. Take a deep breath and slowly release it. Carry the seed of truth of God’s goodness deep inside your heart.

Affirm silently to yourself: God is good and I express God’s vision.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

As you breathe in, affirm in prayer, “God is good in my life right now.” As you breathe out, affirm in prayer, “I express God through my vision and opinions of what I see.”

We will sit here for a few moments, at this great height, on our prayer mountain, affirming these two truths – on the in breath, affirm in prayer, “God is good in my life right now,” and on the out breath, affirm in prayer, “I express God through my vision and opinions of what I see.”

Rest in the silence of prayer …

This is the truth of God. Carry it with you all this day. Down here in the world, carry with you the vision of God’s good in your life right now.

For this Godly vision, and this peace, we do give thanks.

In the name of Jesus Christ … Amen.

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
Exodus 20:16

THE TRIPLE FILTER – In ancient Greece (469 – 399 BC), Socrates was well known for his wisdom.

One day, the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who said excitedly, “Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?”

“Wait a moment,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”

“Triple filter?”

“That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my student, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

“No,” the man said, “actually, I just heard about it and … “

“All right,” said Socrates. “So, you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?”

“No, on the contrary … “

“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?”

“No, not really.”

“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?”

As spiritual people we must use our every word to encourage and not to destroy. When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.

Proverbs 11: 9;13 – “With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape … A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.”

Gossip is addictive. But it says more about the speaker, than it does about the one being spoken about.

Proverbs 18:8 – “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.”

Gossip is like sugar, addictive to the lowest parts of us, and not good for us, especially in high doses.

Proverbs 12:6 – “The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.”.

Truth in words, especially behind a person’s back, spiritually uplifts the speaker, and the one spoken about. It is an absolute necessity in spirituality.

Proverbs 20:19 – “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.”

Avoid gossip, at all cost, walk away from it, and close your ears.

Proverbs 22:11 – “He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend.”

Proverbs 23:15-16 – “My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.”

What passes over your lips each day? Are your words typically negative, critical, gossiping, deceptive, illusory, justifying, blaming, manipulative and argumentative?

Are they more uplifting, inspirational, positive, questioning, beautiful, loving, universal, truthful, accepting and supportive?

The throat is our center of expression. Who we are sneaks out in our attitudes and in what we say.

“Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs.” — Pearl Strachan Hurd

As the Bible states, “The wise weigh their words on a scale with gold.”

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT’S DIARY

DAY 752 – My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 – Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their FAVORITE chair … must try this on their bed.

DAY 765 – Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was … Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 – I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called “shampoo.” What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 – There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call “beer”. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of “allergies.” Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 – I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time …
