Heartprints

Whatever our hands touch …
We leave fingerprints.
On walls, on furniture,
On door knobs, dishes and books.
Smudges, showing we were there!

Oh Lord, please,
Wherever I go today …
Help me leave Heartprints …
Heartprints of compassion,
Understanding and love.
Heartprints of kindness
And genuine concern.

I shall go out today …
To leave Heartprints …
And if some one should say …
“I felt your touch!”
May that one feeling be …
Your loving touch, Lord,
Through me!

May my heart touch
my lonely neighbor, with a smile,
a worried mother, with peace,
a runaway child, with safety,
a homeless person, with warmth,
and my dear friends, with love.

IT’S CALLED “JOY”

She was six years old when I first met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sand castle, or something, and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea.

“Hello,” she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child. “I’m building,” she said.

“I see that. What is it?” I asked, not really caring.

“Oh, I don’t know, I just like the feel of sand.”

“That sounds good,” I thought, and slipped off my shoes.

A sandpiper glided by. “That’s a joy,” the child said.

“It’s a what?” I asked. “It’s a joy, my mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy.” The bird went gliding down the beach.

“Good-bye joy,” I muttered to myself, “Hello pain,” and turned to walk on. I was depressed; my life seemed completely out of balance.

“What’s your name?” She wouldn’t give up.

“Robert,” I answered. “I’m Robert Peterson.”

“Mine’s Wendy … I’m six.”

“Hi, Wendy.”

She giggled. “You’re funny,” she said.

In spite of my gloom, I laughed too and walked on.

Her musical giggle followed me. “Come again, Mr. P,” she called. “We’ll have another happy day.”

The days and weeks that followed belonged to others- a group of unruly Boy Scouts, PTA meetings, and an ailing mother.

The sun was shining one morning as I took my hands out of the dishwater. “I need a sandpiper,” I said to myself, gathering up my coat. The ever-changing balm of the seashore waited me. The breeze was chilly, but I strode along, trying to recapture the serenity I needed. I had forgotten the child and was startled when she appeared. “Hello, Mr. P,” she said. “Do you want to play?”

“What did you have in mind?” I asked, with a twinge of annoyance.

“I don’t know; you pick.”

“How about charades?” I asked sarcastically.

Her twinkling laughter burst forth again. “I don’t know what that is.”

“Then let’s just walk,” I said. Looking at her, I noticed the delicate fairness of her face. “Where do you live?” I asked.

“Over there.” She pointed toward a row of summer cottages. Strange, I thought, in winter.

“Where do you go to school?”

“I don’t go to school. Mommy says we’re on vacation.” She chattered little girl talk as we strolled up the beach, but my mind was on other things. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day. Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed.

Three weeks later, I rushed to the beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood to even greet Wendy. I thought I saw her mother on the porch and felt like demanding she keep her child at home. “Look, if you don’t mind,” I said crossly when Wendy caught up with me, “I’d rather be alone today.”

She seemed unusually pale and out of breath. “Why?” she asked.

I turned to her and shouted, “Because my mother died!” and thought, “My God, why was I saying this to a little child?”

“Oh,” she said quietly, “then this is a bad day.”

“Yes,” I said, “and yesterday and the day before and – oh, go away!”

“Did it hurt?” she inquired.

“Did what hurt?” I was exasperated with her, with myself.

“When she died?” she asked.

“Of course it hurt!” I snapped, misunderstanding, wrapped up in myself. I strode off.

A month or so after that, when I next went to the beach, she wasn’t there. Feeling guilty, ashamed and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage after my walk and knocked at the door. A drawn looking young woman with honey-colored hair opened the door. “Hello,” I said. “I’m Robert Peterson. I missed your little girl today and wondered where she was.”

“Oh, yes, Mr. Peterson, please come in. Wendy spoke of you so much. I’m afraid I allowed her to bother you. If she was a nuisance, please, accept my apologies.”

“Not at all – she’s a delightful child,” I said, suddenly realizing that I meant what I had just said.

“Wendy died last week, Mr. Peterson. She had leukemia. Maybe she didn’t tell you.”

Struck dumb, I groped for a chair. I had to catch my breath.

“She loved this beach; so when she asked to come, we couldn’t say no. Wendy seemed so much better here and had a lot of what she called ‘happy days.’ But the last few weeks, she declined rapidly … ” Her voice faltered. “She left something for you … if only I can find it. Could you wait a moment while I look?”

I nodded stupidly, my mind racing for something to say to this lovely young woman. She handed me a smeared envelope with “Mr. P” printed in bold, childish letters. Inside was a drawing in bright crayon hues – a yellow beach, a blue sea, and a brown bird. Underneath was carefully printed: A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY.

Tears welled up in my eyes and a heart that had almost forgotten how to love opened wide. I took Wendy’s mother in my arms. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” I muttered over and over, and we wept together.

The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. Six words – one for each year of her life – that speak to me of harmony, courage, and undemanding love. A gift from child with sea-blue eyes and hair the color of sand – who taught me the gift of love.

NOTE: This is a true story by Robert Peterson. It serves as a reminder to all of us that we need to take time to enjoy life, living, and each other. The price of hating other human beings is loving oneself less. Life is so complicated, the hustle and bustle of everyday traumas can make us lose focus about what is truly important and what is only a momentary setback or crisis. Today, tomorrow, be sure to give your loved ones an extra hug, and by all means, take a moment … even if it is only ten seconds, to stop and smell the roses.

Dear God I pray in the name of Jesus Christ that my human eyes are not blinded by appearances and the perceptions of my human brain are not locked in by strong opinion.
God in this hour I turn to You for a higher understanding.
God, please help me to remember that I only have a partial view of the overall picture.
I know that Your good always wins and I know in this situation your good will prevail.
Even though I may not see it in the moment, I hold strong in faith as I patiently wait and ask for Divine understanding.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.
Matthew 21:21

Once upon a time there was a lobster. This lobster lay at the bottom of the ocean thinking about the New Year ahead. The lobster had high hopes for the coming year but, unlike us, he was limited in how much he could grow. He had a thick shell around him that limited his growth.

The lobster decided that the past limitations could not hold him back any longer, so, the lobster decided in faith to risk everything in order to grow.

The lobster then had to shed his thick protective shell in order to grow. His shell was holding him back, limiting him, stopping him from attaining his full potential. Underneath his shell, there was only a thin pink membrane skin. His shell was the only thing in the world that protected him. But the wise lobster was willing to risk all in order to grow. Possible growth was the most valuable asset this lobster had, AND it is our most valuable asset also.

So often we live inside shells that we have made to protect us or to hide us. As soon as we make a shell for ourselves, we find that it is too small. No shell that a human molds around himself, or herself, can contain the magnificence and the glory waiting to burst forth.

There is a new dawn breaking in our lives. On this date in our personal history, we will leave an old, worn-out year behind. We will also leave behind all ideas in our mind of limitation and lack.

This is God’s time in your life.

The fields are white for the harvest right now in our lives. The time has come for us once again to take the reins and guide our awareness toward the unlimited good of God that awaits us all. We start wisely by building our faith in what can be accomplished with God as our partner.

I often tell myself to try something so impossible that it will only succeed IF God is in it.

Be involved in something bigger than yourself. Invest your time in a Divine idea from God. There are Divine ideas awaiting your harvest.

Our purpose in life becomes very clear when we obey the still small voice within us. When we become silent and turn to God in prayer, we began to hear and feel new ideas. These ideas can guide us, illumine us, heal us to perfect wholeness and provide overflowing prosperity.

We are not alone. God is our friend, partner, and companion. This year will be the most amazing year of our lifetime. If we have boxed ourselves in – we decide now to unbox ourselves because our potential is too great to be boxed up. We must not identify with any shell that we have made. We are not our shell. The further we go into mind, the wider its horizon until we are forced to acknowledge that we are not the personal limited thing that we appear to be, but the focus of God’s infinite idea. That idea contains within itself inexhaustible possibilities.

This can be a time of inexhaustible possibilities for you!

Time is but an empty vessel for you to place your God given creations.

You are a most important factor in creation. You + God = miracles.

This is a time of original faith thinking in you. It is possible to live a whole lifetime without a single original thought; instead, many people just think the secondhand ideas of ancestors, ideas of race consciousness, or the threadbare stock of the ordinary social whirl.

By your original faith thinking, you will catch the sight of the God truth in God’s ideas for your life. You will see images generated in your mind from the love of God. This faith thinking is not based on reasoning. The faith thinker does not compare, analyze, or draw conclusions from known premises. Like Jesus, the faith thinker does not take appearances into consideration and is not biased by precedent.

You are free agent you build your own world with God’s help.

Descartes said, “I think, therefore I AM;” however, I believe that can be turned around to “I AM, therefore I think.”

We will not limit ourselves; we will not be held back by old existing thoughts. We will no longer be a slave to personal limited thinking. We will do as the lobster did; we will un-shell ourselves and walk forward with courage and faith – and growth WILL happen – positive growth based not on past appearances but faith from the wellspring of God’s idea harvest.

Dear God, I know that You created me for success in 2023.

When we speak of peace between people, we are speaking of a state of order and calm that exists as long as all who are involved agree. However, when we speak of spiritual inner peace, we are referring to a serenity of the soul that emanates from God.

We often find ourselves in conflicts in families or at our workplace. Like on the high seas, the storm is only on the surface. Underneath the waves is lasting calm. The Bible refers to this as a wellspring that will never go dry, that will always quench our thirst and matter how hot situations get. Divine peace is always within us, waiting to be drawn upon–we only need to turn to God in prayer to be consciously connected to the source of our tranquility.

Once we have experienced Divine tranquility, we will understand that it far exceeds our expectations and goes beyond any preconceived limitations. We will yearn for the return of it should our thoughts ever go astray. When we are experiencing inner tranquility, we are experiencing the presence of God.

Tranquility is one of the greatest, finest, and highest states of being. It is one in which it does not matter what happens to us. Tranquility is a state of mind wherein we know that something is sustaining us and we know that we have our purpose in God. Tranquility is a state of mind wherein humans are complete in themselves. It is obtainable to us all, for it belongs to all humankind.

Tranquility is a result, an effect. You can choose at any time to be on the side of God and so find an inner peace and tranquility so great that nothing can disturb the calm peace of your soul.

It is the inner tranquility within ourselves that is our power against every adversity. Where tranquility is, there is no loss of strength through mental strain. The energy that is wasted through friction and mental struggle is often sufficient to do the work of 10 people.

More than anything on earth, inner tranquility is what humans seek and want. This is true for the individual and the nations. Power comes to the one who can hold his or her peace. This must not be an outer, seeming peace, but a true inner quietness. No “miserable inside” an artificial peace outside is of any use.

Practice tranquility even when things are not going exactly the way you want them to. Remember it is your day, and you decide how to live it. Well-being happens from the inside out, not from the outside in. Practice peace even if everyone seems to fail you. Even if your job is gone, your good seems to be slipping away, your loved ones have turned aside, and health problems challenge, practice tranquility and you will be connecting to God’s power and help.

When you are one with tranquility, you are an open channel for all that is yours by Divine right. When you do the reverse, you block a lot of God’s good. Just as a closed fist cannot receive, the tense mind is not open to receive the answers, the solutions, and the healing from God.

Dear God, this day I pray to know the peace that
passes all human understanding. I am ready to live in the calm realization that
I am Your child, connected to You and all that You are. Help me to live this day
as a tranquil person bathed in spiritual well-being. I pray that I have a

SIGNS AND WONDERS

“God works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth.”
Daniel 6:27

God never withholds guidance nor reserves it only for times of challenge. It is we, ourselves, that stop the flow of guidance from God through our insistence on following old habits of worry and fear.

God is continually guiding you. Today, I pray for signs and wonders in your life. When you hear a bird singing a song, it is a trigger in you to remember that this is a day to experience fully and enjoy completely. You are reminded that you have joy to express.

When you see a flower in full bloom, showing the beauty, texture and life that was once contained in a tiny seed, you hear the still small voice in you telling you that there is also wonder within you waiting to be expressed.

When you see the time and you notice that it says 11:11 or 1:11 you remember, that it is God reminding you of your connection of perfect oneness.

Signs and wonders will be all around you today reminding you of magnificent life. God’s guidance will lead you to great discoveries and fulfillment.

You decide today that for the next 24 hours you will not worry or have fear. If you could actually feel the effects of your thoughts on your body, you would probably be amazed. You would feel peaceful, quiet thoughts relaxing your blood vessels so that your whole body would be nourished with the fluid of life and relieved of all toxins.

If you could actually feel how the words you speak affect you physically, you might experience a stimulating energy caressing the very cells of your body.

Today you think peaceful refreshing thoughts and at the same time open yourself up to relying completely upon the Spirit of God to be the source of good in your life.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Dear God, I begin this day on a positive, upbeat note. I remember that whatever comes and goes in my life, God’s presence is one blessing that always remains constant. I can always rely upon You God.

Knowledge of Your presence throughout today will be a blessing that will give me more than I can ever imagine possible. The ground on which I walk, the air which I breathe, the family and friends who love and care for me are all signs and wonders of Your presence in my life.

I will be reminded continually today that I will never be separated from your presence. Divine grace permeates the air I breathe, permeates the thoughts I think, and empowers the love I express.

Today, and every day, I see signs and wonders everywhere. Thank You God for surrounding me and my life.

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I make a commitment now to see with God eyes. I will lift up my human eyes to the heights of my soul from whence cometh my help and healing.

My sight cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth. My eyes are filled with this light of living love. This view blessed by the light of Truth displaces darkness, dimness, and doubt. I bless my eyes and my eyes bless me. I am given in this moment of time a perception from on high.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Lovingly, gratefully, I make it my practice to see God’s good everywhere. The optic nerve is a channel for God to work in, on, and through. Thought focused on God’s ideas is neither far-sighted nor near-sighted; it is now-sighted, God-sighted. The essence of the healing Christ impregnates, bathes, and dissolves looking to the negative. There is no seeing bad in the eyes of Christ, and none in me.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

My sight is one with Thee, O Light of the world. This living light of spiritual discernment includes all human eyesight. The spirit of oneness flows through me, feeding, nourishing the neglected good, the beauty I may have been blind to, before. The searching rays of righteousness uncover and expose the best of every person, place, and thing that I view, be myself within the glass image of the mirror.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Steadfastly facing thee, O Christ of my being, there is not a single thing I am afraid to look upon. I face life. I face love. I look out from the eyes of the eternal and behold, it is INCREDIBLY good. There is no impatience or resistance in me caused by what I see.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

In this moment of time, I let God rule, regulate, and adjust the miraculous membranes of my organs of sight. There is one sight, one universal and eternal vision. This sight is my sight now. My whole body glows with the glory of gratitude and praise. My eye will be single. My body will be filled with light. I give my eyes entirely over to the blessed healing presence. I see with the eyes of God, to perceive beyond appearance forevermore.

In Jesus Christ’s name … Amen.

Through God, I send you my blessings of love and warm memories on this Memorial Day. I pray for your great ongoing and for God to continue to guide you and lead you. Through prayer I send my thanks to you for being such an important part of my life, thank you for the gifts of time and energy that you gave so freely to me. I want you to know through prayer that my life is better today because you were a formative part of it. Thank you and I love you and I always will.

In addition, God, I ask in prayer for a blessing of all those that served our great country and gave their lives in war so that we can continue the high standard of life that we enjoy.

I pray that all are comforted and sustained as they continue their life experience on the other side. I ask You to be with their families today letting them know that life continues and it does not end.

Dear God, I pray that all those that visit cemeteries today are comforted by your loving presence. May each person be spiritually aware that life continues.

God, I know that each one of us, as we cross that threshold that humans call death, will come to realize that it is a joyous experience of reunion with those that have gone on ahead of us.

A priest and pastor from the local parishes are standing by the side of the road holding up a sign that reads, “The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it’s too late!”

“Leave us alone you religious nuts!” yelled the first driver as he sped by.

From around the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash.

“Do you think,” said one clergyman to the other, “we should just put up a sign that says ‘Bridge Out’ instead?”

Ponderings:

Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

How are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

Google Maps really needs to start their directions on #5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

WHY do people read the obituaries of people they’ve never met?

Bad decisions make good stories.

I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

“Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this – ever.

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Darn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice mail. What did you do after I did not answer? Drop the phone and run away?

I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it.

I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.

I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear or understand a word they said?

Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

When I was little, my mother used to sew a great deal. I would sit at her knee and look up from the floor and ask what she was doing. She informed me that she was embroidering. As from the underside I watched her work within the boundaries of the little round hoop that she held in her hand, I complained to her that it sure looked messy from where I sat.

She would smile at me, look down and gently say, “Child, you go about your playing for a while, and when I am finished with my embroidering, I will put you on my knee and let you see it from my side.”

I would wonder why she was using some dark threads along with the bright ones and why they seemed so jumbled from my view. A few minutes would pass and then I would hear Mother’s voice say, “Child, come and sit on my knee.”

This I did, only to be surprised and thrilled to see a beautiful flower, or a sunset. I could not believe it, because from underneath it looked so messy.

Then Mother would say to me, “My child, from underneath it did look messy and jumbled, but you did not realize that there was a plan on the top. It was design. I was only following it. Now, look at it from my side and you will see what I was doing.”

Many times through the years, I have looked up to God and said, “God, what are You doing?” God has answered, “I am embroidering your life.”

I say, “But it looks like a mess to me. It seems so jumbled. The threads seem so dark. Why can’t they all be bright?”

God seems to tell me, “My child, you go about your business of doing My business, and one day I will bring you to Heaven and put you on My knee and you will see the plan from My side.”

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:
Dear God, when things in my life look messy and jumbled I pray that I look to You first, and then see with the eyes of faith beyond the mess to the beauty within.
Thank You God for spiritual vision.

Confidence is a beautiful word. It conveys a feeling of faith and trust in the goodness of things. Confidence is something we all need to aspire to and build upon.

There are several aspects to the idea of confidence. There is self-confidence, a very important aspect of confidence. Our success in life depends, to a great degree, on the amount of confidence we have in ourselves. Self-confidence is the balanced, sure feeling that comes from knowing that God is always with you to guide and to provide for you. You have self-confidence when you rely upon the Divine presence with you, at all times. Knowing that God is always dependable gives you the ability to cope with situations that arise in your life. God gives you self-confidence; ask for it in prayer and it will be yours.

Another aspect of confidence is that of trust. You do not want to betray another’s confidence in you. You establish a reputation for dependability as you keep faith with others. Those who entrust confidential knowledge to you will have confidence in you. You will always honor your commitment to another, just as God always honors commitment to you.

Knowing that God has confidence in you gives you great confidence within yourself and about yourself. You are a child of God and you, consciously, seek to know and to express your spiritual identity more fully, today and every day.

As a child of God, you are heir to infinite blessings. You have confidence that nothing can ever be kept from you that is yours by Divine inheritance. Your birthright of good flows to you, surely and quickly, from God, as you open your mind and life to receive it. God, rightly, fulfills all desires and answers all questions, and supplies all needs – in this you have complete confidence.

From God, you inherit the limitless life and supply of good. From God, you receive limitless wisdom and love.

You have confidence that you DO NOT inherit sickness or lack. You have confidence in health and supply because your all-loving God gives only perfect health and abundance of every good thing. You know that you cannot be lonely or confused as long as you turn to God’s constantly loving presence. You have confidence in God’s love.

Your spiritual confidence stands on a foundation of joy and thanksgiving. You have confidence that, no matter what you face in your life, you will not face it alone.

You have confidence in Jesus Christ who says to you, “Lo, I am with you always!”

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

I ask you to enter this day with an expectation of miracles.

Because we live in God’s world, miracles are all around us.

Decide to be Divinely curious and curious about the Divine. If you were to think about the inner qualities that are essential to happy, successful living, you might overlook an important one, curiosity.

Curiosity may seem an unusual quality to consider; yet, it is essential if we are to expand and grow. It is essential to gaining an understanding of ourselves, God, and the world we live in.

Because humans are naturally curious, we seek and find God’s truth. You are seeking and you are finding an understanding of God and your relationship to God. You are seeking meaning and purpose in your life. Because humans are curious, we consider our mind, our power to think; we seek more knowledge of our world and ourselves.

We ask questions of ourselves and of life. We learn all that we can about the capacity of our bodies to maintain a state of health and wholeness. Because humans are curious, we question what we are doing, and why we are doing it. We question where we are going both as individuals and as a society. We question our place in the scheme of things. We try, through faith, to reach beyond the known facts, beyond what someone else has pioneered or discovered. We explore the far reaches of the inner and outer realms of life.

We are spiritual beings living a human experience.

Through faith, we enter into our future with the excitement of curiosity, grounded in a feeling of confidence, with an expectation of God’s good. Whatever our hopes and dreams or plans have been, we move forward with the curiosity prepared to discover more. Our curiosity leads us to success and fulfillment. The curiosity we feel is a God-given gift to motivate us to go beyond where we have been.

We look to God as the ultimate source, and we bless every channel through which the excitement of life comes to us. We know that blessings will abound in our life as we stir up the gifts of God, and put them to use in practical and positive ways.

We know that there can be no limitations that can’t be overcome, no doors that can’t be opened as we let God find expression in and through us.

We rely upon the power of God and we are successful in all our undertakings. Our curiosity leads to a life grounded in spirituality that is rich and abounding with God’s blessings.
