You get, what you give, multiplied back – give peace and harmony to those around you.

When I wrote this it was raining outside of Positive Christianity, we had moved all the fall flower pots from under the patio, to be nourished outside by the gentle rain before full winter set in to Houston Texas.

Sometimes we treat our plants better than our human relationships.

We should harmonize and nourish all of our relationships constantly because in so doing they grow into things of beauty in our lives.

Today you decide to nourish every one of your relationships.

People can either be like sandpaper, or soft feather pillows, however most of the time we are somewhere in-between. The days that I have been like sandpaper I have made other people miserable, and they in turn have made me more miserable. The days that I have been like a pillow, I have been easy to be around. I have made others happy by my gentle presence, and in turn, they have made me even happier by the response that they gave me back.

You get what you give.

When you are with people, you make choices about the way that you interact with them. One of the most important choices you can make is to decide today to live and work in harmony with others.

If someone says or does something you do not agree with, or are offended by, you remember that you have been created by the God of love – to be loving. You can be and are courteous and respectful to all people.

You lose your God-given power when you react negatively. You have bought into the negativity instead of the peace and harmony of God. The world outside of you has little power on the God-given world inside of you, unless you allow it to.

A friendly reminder goes a long way in establishing a harmonious environment and good relationships.

So today you are reminded and empowered by God to be a harmonizer.

You live by the Golden Rule and treat others with the same acceptance as you would like them to treat you.

Your awareness of the presence of God prompts you to create a peace-filled, harmonious environment that nourishes all your relationships.

In Judges 13:17, our Bible states, “What is your name, so that we may honor you?” Name in the Bible means nature. People look at you and they quietly ask what is your nature? When your nature is peace and harmony they honor you with the same.

Let us nourish all of our relationships today FIRST through prayer.

Dear God, I think about all the people who have enriched my life, I feel such a desire to bless and honor them, and I can — in my prayer for each and every one of them:

“I give thanks to God for you. I honor you for all that you are and all that you do. Most of all, I appreciate you for being a unique and wonderful expression of God’s gifts in my life.

You are glowing with the light of God, and you radiate love and joy to all who are willing to receive. I have received wondrous nourishment from being in close association with you. Being in your presence warms my heart, for I can see God’s love in the radiant beauty of your face.

I feel so very Blessed to know you, and I give thanks for the wonderful, positive influence you have been for me. I give thanks for you directly to God. I love you, and I honor you for living as the sacred spirit that you are in my life.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27

So many people go through life being terrified. Spirituality is the depth of your bliss in the middle of everyday life. Often, life presents change and advancement. Let us become excited about life instead of becoming terrified. Let us realize that “God’s will” for us is absolute good, at all times and in all ways.

When the angel told humankind of the importance of Jesus birth, those witnesses were terrified. As we advance in spiritual growth, we would hope that if we were standing witness today, the biblical writers would instead record of us —

“Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were overjoyed and at peace.”

Why do we struggle so much going through life? I suppose, it’s because we think we are alone, or even abandoned. If we have faith in God, we are at peace.

Think about all the wasted days you spent in the past in tormented turmoil — and for what profit did it bring? Worry and anxiety bring only more worry and anxiety.

This Christmas, you decide to accept God’s good news. You make a conscious decision to enjoy your life instead of to agonize through the many days that are not so-called perfect.” You accept God’s gift of peace.

Truly, peace on earth begins with the individual. As you, individually, seek to live in harmony with yourself and others, you contribute to the peace of the world, and to the peace of the world you live in.

Whenever there is a concern for the world situation, prayer is always the answer. Prayer brings freedom from fear and pours a comforting benediction upon troubled waters. When you pray, you connect yourself to God’s peace. Prayer always leads to inner peace. Unless there is peace in your heart, there can be no peace in your individual world. Unless you find, through prayer, the resolution of the inner conflicts and the harmony that comes through forgiveness and understanding, your prayers for peace in your world will not be effective.

When one heart is full of love and lives peacefully and joyously with others, the whole world is lifted. Truly, this is following Jesus Christ.

Today and everyday of this second Advent week, let us consciously live in peace within ourselves and with all others, knowing that this is the way to a peace that will eventually fill the whole world.

Choose a family member or yourself to first light the first candle for Hope/Faith (purple candle) and the second candle for Peace (purple candle) from the Christ Candle (white candle).

SAY:

“We light this first candle of advent representing Hope/Faith, and the second candle for peace. In the midst of unrest, anxiety, suffering, and sickness in our world, all of creation is groaning for peace. We cannot make it or create it or find it on our own. True peace comes from our Creator. True peace guides and guards our hearts and minds. True peace comes from Jesus. Peace has come into our lives.”

The angel of the Lord shines around me and my family this Christmas and I find, through my own spiritual experiences, a profound birth of peace in my soul.

Dealing With Grief During The Holiday Season

Grief or depression can be overwhelming during the holiday season for some. Whether you have experienced the loss of a loved one or are currently fighting through a difficult time in your life, the following story might be just for you. It relates a great approach that you may be able to use to help you deal with grief in a positive fashion.

Someone on Reddit wrote the following heartfelt plea online:

“My friend just died. I don’t know what to do.”

A lot of people responded. Then, there was one old man that wrote an incredible comment that stood out from the rest that might just change the way that we approach the turmoil of life, death, and other negative experiences.

“Alright, here goes. I’m old. What that means is that I’ve survived (so far) and a lot of people I’ve known and loved did not. I’ve lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbors, and a host of other folks. I have no children, and I can’t imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here is my two cents.”

“I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don’t want to. It tears a hole through me whenever someone I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don’t want it to ‘not matter.’ I don’t want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep … so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are only ugly to people who can’t see.”

“As for grief, you’ll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you’re drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. All you can do is float. You find some piece of wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it is a physical thing … a happy memory, a photograph, etc. Maybe it’s a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Staying alive.”

“In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don’t even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you’ll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what’s going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything … and the wave comes crashing … but in between waves … there is life.”

“Somewhere down the line, and it is different for everybody, you will find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging onto some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you’ll come out.”

“Take it from an old guy … the waves never stop coming and somehow you don’t really want them to. But you learn that you will survive them. And other waves will come … and you will have to survive them too. If you’re lucky, you’ll have lots of scars from lots of loves … and lots of shipwrecks.”

All of us feel the need for more faith. Author Lowell Fillmore has written:

“True faith is victorious over every adverse condition, overcoming every human weakness, supplying every human need; it will not stoop to strive with the earthly adverse circumstances, it simply rises above them and they become subject to its will.

When faith is genuine, circumstances that appear to be evil are compelled to get in to line with God’s good plan. Victorious faith admits no compromise, defeat, or shadow of turning. It will not permit the imagination to dwell upon evil. Faith will have nothing to do with thoughts of evil, for it steadfastly upholds the good, true, perfect creation of our all-wise God.”

If you ever feel up against a wall because of an unwanted situation in your life, I ask you to remember that there is a power with you mightier than any barrier confronting you.

Gods enabling power, expressed through you, fortifies, and strengthens you in a moment, to moment basis. You are not frustrated nor are you held back by circumstances.

One of the most popular verses in the Bible is “Faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Love may be the greatest but that does not send hope to a lowly position.

It has been said, “Where there is life, there’s hope.” Let us reverse this idea at Positive Christianity and positively affirm, “Where there’s hope, there’s life!”

Hope is evidence of the undying flame of God’s Spirit within us that yearns for life. God never gives up on us, for we are God’s creation and God knows that we will never fail as we let hope dissolve disappointment.

Hope is misplaced when it is placed on outer conditions, of events, or things. Jesus said for us not to judge according to appearances, and we must not. Hope is evidence of God inspiring within us, stirring, moving, urging us to grow in faith and love. The hope of God is eternal, and we are alive in the truth of God’s renewing life surging through our mind and body right now.

Spiritual love can be extended to all people in all situations.

If you are misjudged, as a spiritual person, you can still try to understand the feelings of others. With God’s help you can do the things that are fair, right, and good, empowered by the love of God, so that harmony and right conditions may be restored.

If you feel that another person is holding you back from the good that you desire, you cancel such thoughts at once, for you know that with God’s help no person can stand between you and the good things that God has prepared for you. You rejoice that God’s love is helping you now to overcome every setback, false report, and misunderstanding, and that God is, at this very moment, adjusting and balancing all of the situations in your life.

Today allow faith, hope, and God’s love to abide in you.

December 7, twenty-five years ago, Reverend Christopher Chenoweth, set forward to begin this new quest with far less than 100 email addresses.

He often said he didn’t know what he was doing – BUT GOD DID.

Today’s Message: HAVE FAITH IN GOD

God is with you right now, and because of this, you have tremendous faith in God, and in what God has created – YOU! “When you are deluded and full of doubt, even a thousand books of scripture are not enough. When you have realized understanding; even one word is too much.”

You do not believe that God can be absent from you or from the situations in your life. You do not believe in separation from God. You have no faith whatsoever in limitation, because God is with you, RIGHT NOW.

You pledge your faith to God, putting your faith in that which is good. You know that only good can come about in anything that you are dealing with this day.

You have faith in yourself, also. God is with you, and God is mighty to see you through any undertaking. God is powerful enough to cast out of your life all that is not up to the Christ standard. God is powerful enough to establish countless blessings in you, in your life, and in your work.

You have faith in the ultimate goodness that will come about when God touches the situation. You know that the law of God is at work, annulling every adverse and limited belief that may cause you to block the full acceptance of God’s good.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1

You have faith in invisible good. You know that out of the unseen, countless blessings are now coming into evidence for you. As you rest in faith, you are constantly renewed.

The psalmist wrote, “God leads me beside still waters; God restores my soul.” The psalmist is describing a state of mind that is totally trusting in God. This state of mind makes you calm and peaceful.

In prayer, through your faith, you are led to a place of security. It is through your faith-filled, heartfelt prayers that your mind, heart, and soul are restored.

When you are weary and tired, your prayers refresh and renew you. God can renew you in ways that you cannot even imagine in human mind.

When you feel lonely or depressed, have faith in God, and your prayers will uplift and restore you.

When you feel poor and discouraged, have faith in God, and your prayers will instill within you a feeling of interest and prosperity.

Each day have faith in God by taking the time to pray. Beside the still waters of prayer, your soul will be restored. You will arise refreshed and renewed and ready to follow God on the path leading to your good, which has already been prepared for you and awaits your acceptance.

Winston Churchill talking about politics said, “The main qualification for political office is the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year – and have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn’t happen.”

Politicians constantly promise gifts to the voters in a cornucopia of ways to secure a vote.

As a person we want it all.

Sometimes you wish you had it all – all you think you need or should have. Yet when you clear away the confusion over needs and wants, you understand that the simple things in the golden times of life mean the most to you.

Golden moments of Christmas are filled with people and experiences that bring you the greatest fulfillment. There may be times of togetherness with family and friends – enjoying the conversation and the laughter, or there may be special times of quiet away from everyone – relaxing in the sacred solitude for a few moments.

When you think about it, you know any success or prosperity you have enjoyed is most accurately measured by what has touched your heart and warmed your soul. Most special moments of life can happen again and again – every time you realize God’s Spirit is with you.

Jesus shared life enriching spiritual principles that were woven like golden threads throughout the tapestry of his ministry. His stories always shared about how we could have more in our life if we approach life in a spiritual way.

For example, when the apostles asked how they could have more faith, Jesus explained the incredible power of just a little faith – the size of a mustard seed.

“If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this Mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’ and it would obey you.”
Luke 17:6

So, if today you are facing a challenge and you feel as though you need great faith, you remember what a little faith can do. Your faith does not make God more powerful, for God is ALL power, but it does remind you to release the power of God that is always with you, and within you waiting to be used, to heal, comfort, prosper – and so much more.

Spiritually you can have it all. The possibilities are unlimited, and your faith helps you to know that this is true for you. Our hopes and dreams must be invested in God. God will not lead you astray. God will not leave you disappointed. Invest your hopes and dreams in God and then go from that worthy place and change your world. With just a little faith you can move mountains!

The uplifting, strength and courage you seek are at hand. God is your ever-present help. Everything needed is ready to work with you, and in you, for a blessing of mind, body and circumstances in your life. Regardless of where you are physically, or how far you seem emotionally from the peace you desire, your good, your healing, your well-being, your fulfillment is at hand in this prayer now.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Healing of fears, anxieties, tension and emotional upsets is now at hand because God’s help is at hand. Release and freedom from concern over any traumatic happening or feeling of insecurity or defeat is at hand. Right where you are, this moment, you are in the Presence of answers. You are in the Presence of the solutions you have sought.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Your good is tangible. It is touchable. It is available to you now. God awaits and is willing to help you.

Take a few moments to spiritually prepare. Accept these Divine ideas that your healing is at hand. Prayer knows no boundaries of time or space. The healing you seek is in the air you breathe and the surroundings you see. It fills this place. It lives within your heart. It is in the light of day and the darkness of night. It is in the clouds and in the sunshine. It is in the cells and atoms of your body temple. It is in the movement of your mind and the activity all about you.

Your healing is at hand. You accept it. With praise and gratitude, we accept our healing. We are ready for something miraculous to happen inside our mind and body temple. The idea of healing penetrates every thought you have about yourself and all that appears to be occurring in your life. Acquaint yourself with the reality that healing is everywhere present always.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

Now you practice faithfully. You see health in your mind’s eye for yourself and everything that comes across your path. In this moment, in this experience of life, you realize that God is working dynamically inside of you. You turn your attention to thoughts of healing in your body – healing of feelings, healing of events, healing of conditions. You saturate your thinking with a contemplation of healing with thoughts that promote healing and words that show belief in healing.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

“Dear God, I believe right now in healing. I know it is possible for me. I know that I am in agreement, right now, in mind with what is being said.” From this moment forward, you refuse to entertain even the slightest thoughts of lack of faith about yourself or your healing. You refuse to give attention to experiences or negative suggestions that are going on in your mind. Instead you know that the healing is at hand. You accept it with praise for God.

You know that God is with you. You are God’s child. The Creator is within every cell of your body temple. God is in your mind and every thought in your mind. God’s healing will never fail. And God’s healing enfolds and protects you, lifts and encourages you. God’s love is never going to fail to show you the solutions to the problems of healing, the answers to the dilemmas of healing or the confusions about healing.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

God’s healing is everywhere you go. And God’s healing is in everything. It fills your universe. You dwell in the kingdom of God. Wherever you sit or walk or work or live, that healing activity is constantly working on you.

You believe when Jesus says to you that you are meant to express healing in every facet of your life and being. You are an offspring of the Creator. You are an offspring of wholeness and well-being. You inherit the right to claim and accept every kind of healing. You were created with wholeness as a reality of your identity. You have it within your soul and mind.

In the midst of any challenge, disease or a disastrous happening, healing is there. You are now connected with a greater healing than you have been connected with thus far. The Spirit of God is in this place and it is moving right now. The Spirit of Jesus Christ is here and it is moving. There is a healing activity that is taking place. Your job is to accept that.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

You let the words “God’s healing” run as a golden thread of prayer, extending to every distressing ache or pain in your mind and body. “God’s Healing. God’s Healing.”

You use the faith you have right now to sew this golden thread into every cell of your physical body temple. Your heart is alive with new life. The life of God is behind your heart, causing your heart to beat. There is a Divine order working in your heart, lungs, muscles and the very regeneration of the bones.

You are immersed in God’s healing right now. You immerse yourself in the thoughts of healing. You saturate yourself with thinking of healing. There is a great light surrounding you that is transmuting any negative aspect of your being. This healing is available to you now. You are God’s child, contemplating healing right now.

You are imagining healing, visualizing healing.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

You agree to work diligently with every manner and method of healing that encourages your conviction. You give praise and thanks to God working in every cell of your being, regenerating your physical body temple. You have faith in the idea of healing inside of you. You have cooperation with God’s perfection in your mind. You are working with God’s blueprint of perfection.

It is the time to think as Jesus thinks. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain move to here from there and it will move, and nothing will be impossible to you with God.

The mustard seed evolves. It unfolds to become the plant. And so this happens inside of you. You are unfolding perfection. You are going to the Cause of all health and allowing the Cause to flood your being. Your faith is causing an opening inside of you that is productive and significant. It is an opening that is a beginning to a new, wonderfully developed you.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

God is working inside of you to bring about wholeness you seek. As you pray, God is working. You are staying open and receptive to this healing idea and its possibilities. Nothing will be impossible to you with God’s healing help. You hold close to God in your thoughts, in your consciousness that goes beyond your physical brain, to every cell inside of your body that is listening to your words.

You hold close to the wonders of God’s wholeness.

You contemplate yourself as being perfectly healed. You see yourself dissolving every old habit of doubt and disbelief. The Lord of healing has come. God is working now inside of you, living and demonstrating healing. Nothing is impossible. You grasp the thought of healing. You cradle that in your heart. No matter how much struggle it takes to return again and again to faith in healing, you keep on returning.

As you rest in the silence of prayer, you are actively talking to your physical body temple. Starting with your feet and going to your head, praise God for the new life and energy that is occurring within you.

God’s light is running throughout you. There is an inner peace felt within your muscles, bones and entire system. You have a system of God. Every part of you, every cell, is now dedicated to Christ life.

Say aloud, “I DEDICATE EVERY CELL OF MY BODY TEMPLE TO CHRIST LIFE, PERFECTION AND WHOLENESS. I CAST OUT SICKNESS IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

The Creator re-creates me. I am made whole.”

I give thanks for the Christ way and Truth and the gift of healing that rests within me. I give thanks for the Christ healing that is happening now in the deepest recesses of my soul. I know that there is even more of God awaiting release and expression inside of my body temple. I know that this healing is nearer than breathing, closer than hands and feet. It is all present and ever-available, abundant and plentiful.

My personal healing is here right now. It is mine. It is mine. I quietly accept it. I have FAITH, assurance and blessings beyond measure. God is my source. And that source never runs dry. It is never lacking. It never withholds. It never denies. The Source is the same yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever. I will live in wholeness for all the days of my life. I do not have to be sick. I throw that idea out of my physical mind.

I praise and give thanks in the name and through the healing power of Jesus Christ, with an accepting consciousness, the same that was in His mind …

The Bible promises in many places, that the blessing will be like seed planted, it will return so great, that you won’t even have room enough to receive it!

I have been blessed continuously to such a degree, that I cannot adequately put it into words.

Thank God!

Let me share one of my personal private affirmations: When I have a need – I plant the seed!

Jesus Christ said, “But they that sow seed on the good ground (a solid foundation to live life upon) are the people that hear the word and understand, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some hundredfold, some 60, some 30.”

Your new beginning starts here in this place saturated with faith and hope. Everything begins with hope and everything builds from hope.

God is a God of second chances.

Churches around the world practice hope as the first week-long journey in the spiritual practice of Advent. We begin that journey now spending the entire week building our personal hope. Knowing we are connected with God this is easy to do.

Your belief builds your life. You live from inside out.

Believe and have faith that you can and you’re halfway there.

“But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:13

Many people have faith in the wrong things. We can have faith that something will turn out bad. Faith must be invested in your hopes.

Faith believes in something bigger than yourself, better than today.

Hope knows, without doubt, that no matter how big the current problem seems God is with you helping you get to the other side.

Spirituality is the depth of your bliss in the middle of your problem.

Then comes love … Falling in love with your life. And re-falling in love with the people in your life.

We also pray the same for the words that reach you in today’s Positive Daily Inspiration. We pray that no matter what is happening in your life you are filled with new God’s hope this very minute.

With God’s help, when we face the challenge, we come out stronger, not weaker, EVERYTIME.

In prayer, I see you profoundly blessed by God in a cornucopia of good. Looking back on my life, when I have gone through difficult times, I have been amazed at the extra blessings God gave me. Some, I saw right away, others took the clear vision of retrospect. The blessings, and the help of God were always there, overflowing. I pray that this is the same for you right now.

I pray that through God’s help you rise to the next level in your life. You welcome the opportunity that is afforded you. I pray that your vision is enhanced with views of hope. Your positive attitudes are reflected in your growing understanding of God’s truth that sets you free from present limitation.

CHRISTMAS THORNS BOUQUET

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes as she pushed against a December gust and the florist shop door. Her life had been easy, like a spring breeze. Then in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a minor automobile accident stole her ease. During this Christmas week, she would have delivered a son. She grieved over her loss.

As if that weren’t enough, her husband’s company threatened a layoff. Then her sister, whose annual holiday visit she coveted, called saying she could not come. What’s worse, Sandra’s friend infuriated her by suggesting her grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. “She has no idea what I’m feeling,” thought Sandra with a shudder. “Christmas? Christmas for what?” she wondered aloud.

For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life but took that of her child?

“Good afternoon, can I help you?” The shop clerk’s approach startled her.

“I … I need an arrangement,” stammered Sandra. “For Christmas? Do you want beautiful but ordinary, or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the Christmas Special?” asked the shop clerk. “I’m convinced that flowers tell stories,” she continued. “Are you looking for something that conveys ‘gratitude’ this Christmas?”

“Not exactly!” Sandra blurted out. “In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.” Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the shop clerk said, “I have the perfect arrangement for you.”

Then the door’s small bell rang, and the shop clerk said, “Hi, Barbara … let me get your order.” She politely excused herself and walked toward a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped … there were no flowers.

“Want this in a box?” asked the clerk.

Sandra watched for the customer’s response. Was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers!?! She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. “Yes, please,” Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. “You’d think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn’t be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again,” she said as she gently tapped her chest.

“Uhh,” stammered Sandra, “that lady just left with, uhh … she just left with no flowers!

“Right … I cut off the flowers. That’s the Special … I call it the Christmas Thorns Bouquet.”

“Oh, come on, you can’t tell me someone is willing to pay for that?” exclaimed Sandra.

“Barbara came into the shop three years ago feeling very much like you feel today,” explained the clerk. “She thought she had very little to be joyful about.”

“She had lost her father to cancer, the family business was failing, her son was into drugs, and she was facing major surgery.” “That same year I had lost my husband,” continued the clerk,” and for the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too great a debt to allow any travel.”

“So what did you do?” asked Sandra.

“I learned to be thankful for thorns,” answered the clerk quietly. “I’ve always thanked God for good things in life and never thought to ask God why those good things happened to me, but when bad stuff hit, did I ever ask! It took time for me to learn that dark times are important. I always enjoyed the ‘flowers’ of life, but it took thorns to show me the beauty of God’s comfort. You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we’re afflicted, and from God’s consolation we learn to comfort others.”

Sandra sucked in her breath as she thought about the very thing her friend had tried to tell her. “I guess the truth is I don’t want comfort. I’ve lost a baby and I’m angry with God.”

Just then someone else walked in the shop. “Hey, Phil!” shouted the clerk to the balding, rotund man.

“My wife sent me in to get our usual Christmas arrangement … twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!” laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue-wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator.

“Those are for your wife?” asked Sandra incredulously. “Do you mind me asking why she wants something that looks like that?”

“No … I’m glad you asked,” Phil replied. “Four years ago my wife and I nearly divorced. After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord’s grace and guidance, we slogged through problem after problem. He rescued our marriage. Jenny here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind us of what we learned from “thorny” times, and that was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific “problem” and give thanks to God for what that problem taught us.” As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, “I highly recommend the Special!”

“I don’t know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life.” Sandra said to the clerk. “It’s all too … fresh.”

“Well,” the clerk replied carefully, “my experience has shown me that thorns make roses more precious. We treasure God’s providential care more during trouble than at any other time.”

Tears rolled down Sandra’s cheeks. For the first time, since the accident, she loosened her grip on resentment. “I’ll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please,” she managed to choke out.

“I hoped you would,” said the clerk gently. “I’ll have them ready in a minute.”

“Thank you. What do I owe you?” asked Sandra. “Nothing.” said the clerk. “Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart this Christmas. The first year’s arrangement is always on me.” The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra.

“I’ll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you’d like to read it first.”

It read: “Dear God, I have never thanked you for my thorns. I have thanked you a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the challenges I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to you along the path of my own pain, and I feel your comfort now. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of your rainbow look much more brilliant.”
