Psalms 32:8

Sometimes we all need some inspiration to lift us out of the hole we may find ourselves in and give us hope for the future. Words of inspiration shine a light in the dark corners of our mind and dissipate the fearsome shapes and shadows our imaginings have created.

The poem, “Ulysses” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, is such a one and has inspired many. It can be relied on to provide words of good cheer when there is a general lack of harmony or balance in life. The words of the poem are a paean of praise to the indomitable human spirit; of the beauty of love for one’s fellow beings and the knowledge that a human can always aspire to, and achieve, greater and grander things. They remind us we are all free to seek for and arrive at that moment in life when peace, harmony and contentment fill our hearts. That we are better than we could ever imagine.

Now, for sure not everyone likes or appreciates poetry, but poets often get it right, as in this case.

The poem’s last six lines are the important ones:

” … ; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

” … but strong in will to seek, to strive, to find, and not to yield.” – powerful words.

We are living in testing times and it may be comforting to know that others, such as Ulysses, have experienced greater trials and tribulations than most could possibly imagine and have climbed to heights of self-awareness and fulfillment previouslyundreamed of and come through as stronger and better human beings. Most importantly they slept well at night!

We need to understand that peace of mind and having harmony in our lives; being true to our natures; finding our values; being morally correct and ethical in our relationships, is not necessarily something that occurs overnight. It may have taken us twenty or thirty years to get to where we are now, troubled and asking questions about our life’s course. For this there may not be a quick fix solution. It will take a while. But there comes a time when it is necessary to stop, even take a step back, to reflect and ask ourselves the hard questions:

What am I really seeking in life?
What am I really striving for?
What do I hope to find?
Have I the tenacity, the persistence and the wherewithal to hold firm to my dreams and not to give up – never to yield?

Answering those questions will lead to others, typically:-

What am I actually doing?
Does it satisfy me?
Am I happy and contented?
If the circumstances were different what would I LIKE to do?
What do I do to relax, to unwind – does this help?
Will what I am doing now fulfill the dream I had as a child or young adult?
Can I see myself doing what I am doing now in twenty- or thirty-year’s time?

Honest answers to these questions will give greater insight into your current situation.

That is important – but the really the vital question, if you are not happy, is, where to from here?

Within us all are untapped strengths, unimagined courage and grand visions of what we would rather choose to be. Dream of that and ask, “Why not?” Always Seek and Strive to Find, but never Yield!

Your peace of mind and happiness depends on it.

One of the most exciting sounds I can remember as a child was the jingle jangle of the bell on top of the Good Humor Man truck. This was a good name, because it put everyone in a good mood.

Have there been times when something seems so funny that you could not help but laugh out loud. I have been in situations before where I could not control my laughter. I love these times, for they have been highlights of my life.

Years ago, when I was on radio, one time I got so tickled by something that happened I could not stop laughing. I was practically on the floor crying, and laughing at the same time. The interesting thing is, I can’t even remember what made me laugh – all I remember is that wonderful laughter.

Laughter makes your heart lighter, your day brighter, for it is a wonderful gift from God. By looking on the lighter side, you are uplifted and made happier as you go about living your daily life.

There is a healing power in laughter. Even something as simple as hearing the joyful laughter of children can wipe away all traces of negativity from your mind.

Ministers know the value of laughter; thousands of churches of all denominations use part of our Sunday Funnies in their weekly sermons. (If you can’t laugh in church, where can you laugh.)

As you take this childlike joy into your heart, you react to situations with a positive, good-natured attitude.

You greet the day with a twinkle in your eyes, a spring in your step, and happiness that comes from knowing God’s joy in your heart. You are blessed with a gift of good humor.

A positive, affirmative prayer that you can say today is: “I am good humored, even tempered, and pleasant.” This is not only a prayer, but it is a daily goal.

I think about the qualities I most admire and appreciate in others, and I have come to the conclusion that I like to be around people who have a good sense of humor. I like people who can chuckle at life’s idiosyncrasies. I enjoy people who are considerate of the feelings of others, and who express a happy spirit. People that can laugh at life are pleasant and comfortable to be with. I admire people who are even tempered, especially when I know they are facing some particular challenge.

Today, you can become the person people admire and appreciate. You can develop in yourself those qualities which we humans prize in others. You strive to be a good friend to others, to follow the Golden rule, to be life’s goodwill ambassador. There are many opportunities to practice your new skills, and you are ready to be the person you have always wanted to be, to express your God-given ability to smile and laugh.

You are good humored!

Make a list of funny things, on 3 x 5 cards, that have made you laugh in your life, and refer to them as needed.

In your awareness, I ask you to become one with that wondrous Presence of God.

God is with you now.

Surrounding you and within you. You and God are one.

I would like you to meditate on that Truth. YOU AND GOD ARE ONE. You are not separate. You are one with all Power, one with the Perfect One who does not know imperfection of any kind. You and God are one.

I ask you to bathe your human sorrows in this awareness of God. Bathe your worries and bathe your lost hope. God is with you, cleansing, renewing, bringing a Grace to your life. God is here to help you–an immediate God for an immediate solution.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

God is love. And you feel God’s mighty love working within you, bathing your mind, soothing it. You feel God’s love in the very core of your being. God is a giving God. God is giving to you constantly. During this meditation, you open your mind and heart and say, “Dear God, I accept. I consent to You. I consent to oneness. I consent to an infilling in my awareness.” You and God are one.

Meditate on this idea in the silence of prayer …

Sweet, continuous communion with God is happening here. A common-union with God is happening here. This prayer time is going to continue far beyond this prayer time.

This is just the beginning for your day. It is the starting point. As a great horse leaves the starting gate, you leave, gaining speed in your prayer awareness. You will not know sorrow today. You will pray instead. You will not know depression today. You will pray instead.

Human worry is cast out in Jesus Christ’s name.
You pray instead.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

We have a common-union with God who does not know worry or sorrow. We do not fret today. We pray.

You and God are one. God and you are one. God has great need of you. But God can only use you if you consent to the Divine in your free-will.

Dear God, Now, we consent.

God is renewing us today. God is renewing our old dreams and hopes, the vision we used to have of our perception, the thoughts that we have had in our minds when we have prayed and hoped and believed a lot.

That hope is found in you now. It has been lost in you for some time, and your dreams are fulfilled in your prayer times. The healing which has not been at hand is at hand in prayer. You and God are one. God is closer than your breath, as near as your thought. This activity is happening now. Allow it to happen. Ask for it to happen.

Rest in the silence of prayer …

God and you are one strong, indivisible unit. You cannot be divided from God.

God and you are inseparable. You are bonded together. You are fused with new strength. You are fused with that portion of yourself that never doubts. It does not have a concept of doubt. You are no longer alone. God is with you. And you are so aware in your mind that you are working as a pair. You turn your attention away from limited human thought. Continuously you are turning your attention toward abundance, illumination and healing now and forevermore.

In Jesus Christ’s name, we pray … Amen.

Once, in Washington DC, I visited the memorial to this great man, Martin Luther King, Jr. I also toured the new Smithsonian African-American Museum. It has to be one of the great museums of the world.

I grew up in Washington DC.

My parents were in the famous walk on Washington in 1963 and were at the Lincoln Memorial for the “I Have a Dream” speech.

We must come together as brothers and sisters, all races, and all nations, it is the only way for peace.

Jesus constantly associated with people that he was criticized for associating with by the narrow minds that surrounded him. He was born into a prejudiced world and yet He came with a message of all-inclusiveness. It was one of the main messages of Jesus that is rarely taught. The Bible was filled with truth about how we are ALL equal in the eyes of God.

We must become a people that follow God, to realize fully Martin Luther King’s dream in THIS lifetime. This dream is too great to be put off or delayed. We must have courage, like the followers of Martin Luther King Jr. had courage, to go beyond the borders of our own small worlds, to have true love and concern for others different than ourselves.

The more we associate with people that are different from us, the more we find that we have more in common than what would separate us.

I believe it is God’s dream for humankind to love all people as themselves. I believe it is God’s dream for humankind to love people in other churches as much as in their own congregations. I believe it is God’s dream for us to accept all men and women as accepted members in our own elite friendships.

Humankind is evolving spiritually. Not everyone has had the blessing of being raised in a family structure that is all-inclusive to others. For those that were taught to dislike or even hate others as children, through prayer, they can rise higher than the misguided teachings of their past.

The world is a small place and we must not be silent as individuals or as a society, we must learn from the mistakes of silence in the past, and realize the power of the positive voice speaking against injustice and wrong.

Martin Luther King followed Jesus and the example of Gandhi. He changed the world through nonviolent action, and this day, all of us at Positive Christianity salute his noble and ongoing work.

I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road. The reason: “Too many deer were being hit by cars” and he didn’t want them to cross there anymore.

My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for “minimal lettuce.” He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg.

I was at the airport checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, “Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?”

To which I replied, “If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?”

He smiled knowingly and nodded, “That’s why we ask.”

The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it’s safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine when she asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, “What on earth are blind people doing driving?!”

I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself and for the life of her couldn’t understand why her system would not turn on.

When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. “Hey,” I announced to the technician, “it’s open!”

To which he replied, “I know – I already got that side.”

D. I. E. T. stands for … Did I Eat That?

A lawyer and a woman happen to be sitting next to each other on a long cross-country flight. The lawyer leans over to her and asks if she would like to play a fun game. Now this woman happens to be highly intelligent, but she is tired and just wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists, saying that the game is really easy and a lot of fun. He explains how the game works.

“I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me, and vice-versa.” Again, the woman politely declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer thinks he will easily win the match, so he makes another offer: “Okay, how about this? If you don’t know the answer, you pay me only $5, but if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you $500.”

This catches the woman’s attention and, figuring that there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, she agrees to play the game.

The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to the lawyer.

Now it’s the woman’s turn. She asks the lawyer: “What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes back down with four?” The lawyer looks at her with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references. He taps into the air-phone with his modem and searches the Internet and even the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends E-mails to all his colleagues and friends, trying to get some help, all to no avail.

After over an hour of searching for the answer, he finally gives up. He wakes the woman and hands her $500.

The woman politely takes the $500 and turns away to get back to sleep.

The lawyer, who cannot imagine what the answer is, is going nuts trying to figure it out.

He wakes the woman again and asks, “Well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes back down with four?”

The woman reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5, and goes back to sleep.

Dear God, I know that I never need to feel confused or fearful about anything in life – not when I turn to You in prayer.
You assure me that I am not alone.
You are with me in every condition, situation, or circumstance, filling me with reassurance and peace of mind.
Because I am one with You, I feel Your strength and I have the fearlessness of God.
Through every hour of the day and night, I am strengthened and sustained by Your power.
Courage wells up within me now. I live life fully, knowing that You are with me.
At this very moment You bring a presence of peace and serenity to my heart.

Train of Life

Some folks ride the train of life
Looking out the rear,
Watching miles of life roll by,
And marking every year.

They sit in sad remembrance,
Of wasted days gone by,
And curse their life for what it was,
And hang their head and cry.

But I don’t concern myself with that,
I took a different vent,
I look forward to what life holds,
And not what has been spent.

So, strap me to the engine,
As securely as I can be,
I want to be out on the front,
To see what I can see.

I want to feel the winds of change,
Blowing in my face,
I want to see what life unfolds,
As I move from place to place.

I want to see what’s coming up,
Not looking at the past,

Billy Graham passed away recently at the age of 99.

Leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited their favorite son, Billy Graham, to a luncheon in his honor.

Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggled with Parkinson’s disease. But the Charlotte leaders said, ‘We don’t expect a major address. Just come and let us honor you.’ So, he agreed.

After wonderful things were said about him, Dr. Graham stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, and said,

“I’m reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist who has been honored by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn’t find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets.

“It wasn’t there,so he looked in his briefcase but couldn’t find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn’t find it.

“The conductor said, ‘Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket. Don’t worry about it.’

“Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.

“The conductor rushed back and said, ‘Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don’t worry, I know who you are. No problem. You don’t need a ticket. I’m sure you bought one.’

“Einstein looked at him and said, ‘Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don’t know is where I’m going.’

“Having said that, Billy Graham continued, ‘See the suit I’m wearing? It’s a brand-new suit. My children, and my grandchildren are telling me I’ve gotten a little slovenly in my old age. I used to be a bit more fastidious. So, I went out and bought a new suit for this luncheon and one more occasion.

‘You know what that occasion is? This is the suit in which I’ll be buried. But when you hear I’m dead, I don’t want you to immediately remember the suit I’m wearing.

Today, you are thankful that God wills only the best for you and all God’s children.

You are blessed in knowing that God can not contradict God’s Divine nature. God wills ONLY good for your life. God wills only love in your life. God’s will is not random; it never varies. It cannot be changed through prayer or any other means. God’s will is the stable force of the universe.

If it is good, IT IS God’s will. God never blocks access to the best that is yours. God always gives in an overflowing measure, ever-increasing, only limited to the degree that you limit receiving it.

Today, you live in the constant awareness that the will of God for you is love, peace of mind, infinite wisdom, health of body, and true abundance. The will of God for you is satisfying companionship, perfect transportation, and wonderful, rewarding employment. The will of God for you is TOTAL fulfillment.

Knowing this, you happily affirm in prayer: “God’s will be done!”

It is one of the blessings of the spiritual life to know that God cares for you. God cares for you and has provided for you in so many ways that it is almost impossible to count them. God not only cares for you, but God gives of God’s Divine Self freely and abundantly.

You open yourself by opening your heart to receive God’s lavish gifts, and you keep the channel open by caring and sharing with others. You realize that it is God’s will that you accept God’s gifts. It is also God’s will that you share these gifts with others. There are countless ways in which you can share. A joy that is shared is a joy multiplied.

When you share the joy of God through brightening the day for another, you are doing the will of God. Good news, a new idea, a smile, or a laugh with a person can brighten a day. You do God’s will by having a caring heart. You talk to others in ways that promote inner strength and courage in them. As you do God’s will, your own life is enriched and your joys are multiplied, as a result.

Doing God’s will strengthens you in faith. Even as we strengthen our bodies through exercise, so our faith is developed through use. It is God’s will for you to use God, by working with God every day. Your faith is strengthened when you pray to God, when you think and speak words of God’s truth, and when you spend time thinking about the goodness of God and God’s eternal love. By believing in God, you are awakened to an awareness of God’s power and of the Divine good that is coming forth in your life.

It is God’s will that you NOT be stuck in difficulty. Faith in God assures you that there is a way through every difficulty, that there is no problem without a solution. It is God’s will that you are assured of right answers coming through the right channels, at the right times, and in the right and perfect ways.

It is God’s will that all things work for our highest good.

I can remember, vividly, trying to learn to ride a bicycle as a child. I was in the parking lot of my grandfather’s business in Akron, Ohio for hours upon hours, trying to get my balance. I could go in a straight-line, but I could not turn. I am sure that I tried my grandfather’s patience as he worked with me those MANY hours.

When children are first learning to ride a bicycle, training wheels enable them to know how it feels to be in balance.

Balance is a wonderful thing to have in life. Forgiveness is a similar aid in your spiritual growth. Forgiveness is a kind of training wheel that enables you to learn how it feels to be in harmony and balance with others. Practicing forgiveness is like learning to ride a bicycle. It seems hard at first, but once you learn, you never forget. You never lose your balance as a human being again.

When you practice being nonjudgmental and remaining completely focused on the love of God, you are opening the way to harmony and understanding in all your relationships. In time, when you have learned not to pass judgment on the actions of someone else, you will no longer need to forgive, for you will have nothing to forgive.

You will also learn the power of some of the most powerful words you can say – “I’m sorry!” A person knows when they are wrong but often it is hard to admit it. God will give you the power that you may not have yourself. Saying “I am sorry” gives a wonderful gift to another person and what you will discover, over time, is that you are not losing anything by saying this, but instead gaining everything.

If others have said something or done something that upsets you, you bless them and go on your way. If you have said something or done something that has upset another, you bless them by saying, “I am sorry.” You are secure in the truth of your being – you choose to be an expression of God’s perfect love. The training wheels are off, for you have moved beyond the need for forgiveness.

Being in balance means being patient with both yourself and others. Realize that the miracle of new life is always taking shape, even though you may not be able to see it with your eyes. After planting a seed, you patiently wait for the first sign of new growth; but during this time of patience, you realize that a miracle is taking shape.

Often, when you forgive another, or ask for forgiveness, the results are not immediate, because human beings must go through change, growth, and new awareness. The person that trusts in God and God’s love ever at work in all situations is in balance. Patience takes over where impatience would have, before, ruled the day.

The patience that you give to that seed, you also extend to yourself, and to all others. Everyone needs time to develop understanding, and spiritual skills. Being patient, you dedicate yourself to living the balanced life in this moment, trusting that God’s order will prevail.

God is the God of Divine order, so you are guaranteed that your blessings will come to you, at the right time and in the perfect way. Knowing this, you can be patient with anyone you may encounter. You find it easy to forgive – so much easier than the old way of forever holding on to the grudge that seeks only to destroy your own balance.

Ephesians 4:1-3

A funny story that I love to tell is a true story about a very wealthy man who included in his will that he wanted to be buried in his Cadillac.

So, the executors of his estate followed his directions precisely. They had an enormous hole dug. The dead man was sitting behind the wheel in the Cadillac. They wheeled the Cadillac to the grave and the Cadillac was lowered into the ground. Two grave diggers were standing there and they were overheard talking to one another.

The one grave digger turned to the other and said: “My, some people really know how to live!”

You want to be alive NOW, fully alive. In order to live and work happily and harmoniously with others, you are kind, loving, and patient. You also keep in mind that, like you, these people are God’s creation – works in progress. You bless them and release them to God to proceed at their own pace.

If you tend to be possessive of another, you call to mind that every person belongs solely to God. You entrust all your relationships to God with the realization that Divine wisdom and love will bring about the highest good of all.

Freedom is important to you; it is important to every person. As you release people that you care about and everyone whose life touches yours into God’s care, you ensure that your relationship with each one is loving, strong, and harmonious.

The number one person that you have to live with, though, is yourself. How can you convince yourself to be calm no matter what is going on around you? The way to peace does not come through convincing; it comes through an awareness of God with you every moment of the day and the night.

“And He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there was calm.”
Luke 8:24

When an awareness of God awakens inside of you, you will have the power to rebuke the wind and raging waves in your daily life. You will see problems cease and the new calm come to your life.

Are you working toward overcoming some habit? You were never alone in your overcoming; the Christ presence works within you, strengthening you and encouraging you along the road to complete recovery. The will of God for you is success.

If you are going to apply for a job, you affirm in prayer that the presence of Christ goes with you during the interview, and you become calm and serene.

To be fully alive, is to live in the serenity of knowing the presence of God is with you. I pray that you are more alive today because you have spent these few moments thinking about God’s ever present help.

POSITIVE DAILY PRAYER:

Allow God to talk to you.

Beloved child, you need not cry out for help, for I am with you.

Right now, God is flowing through your human mind – all, not part, of God Mind. All the attributes of the mind of God are flowing through you, helping you to become all you can be.

Using the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ, recognize that you are calling forth your full God potential. You are going to be your prayer, because you become one with God in total faith.

Rest now, fully, in the presence of God …
